My real concern is what does this NCAA settlement and the future pay for play model mean for our middle-of-the-pack schools like Stony Brook?

So much going on. Feels like College sports as we know it is DEAD!

Athletes at schools like SB who develop into P5 level talent, even if only as a possible backup at the higher level, will bail as soon as they can to get a piece of the salary pie. There will be a steady outflow of talent and the gap between the haves and have-nots grows even bigger. I think it becomes a losing battle and some schools will decide to cut their losses and drop back down to D2 or D3, or cut expensive sports like football altogether. Schools like SB might get a greater return by investing money away from athletics into academics and student life programs. The writing is on the wall.

That's a pessimistic view, but not out of the realm of possibilities.  I see this more as a sanctioned revenue sharing model, which clearly favors the big schools (P5) but may have an effect on the mid majors as well.   Maybe players at SBU will wind up sharing ticket/merchandise/advertising sales with the University.  It'll take some time to see how this all shakes out.

One thing for certain, college athletics has become professional athletics, to a smaller scale.  What's next, High School pay-for-play?
How old a Seawolf am I? I followed them during their Final 4 DIII hoops run in 1977-78 (they were called the Patriots then)

But everyone will have to revenue share right?

Not just the Power-5.

That means that Stony Brook will have to pay athletes any revenue generated? Right?

and what does this mean for non-revenue generating sports? Does that mean those student athletes don't get paid?

This is honestly so confusing. We urgently need CONGRESS to get involved and lay out the rules for collegiate athletics.

the one thing i do know is that college sports as we once knew it really over- behind the scenes that is.  the product on the field/court may appear the same, but everything has been tainted with money.  it already was; this is now just more overt.

it's getting harder and harder to watch, and i don't blame the players, coaches, ADs, etc.  i blame the NCAA, and maybe even the boosters to some extent (at the highest levels).

here's a perspective, though it is focused on women's lacrosse nationally, it may provide some insights (which i mostly agree with!):

Back to the original question, how will this impact women's lax.

My perspective.

First off, some clarity around the settlement. The settlement calls for 22% of revenues to go to athletes, not a fixed $$ amount. Obviously, impact is much greater for power 5 schools than other schools.

Some impacts from my perspective

1) BIG LOSER -- 2026 recruits. Details of this settlement won't be finalized until mid-fall at the earliest. This means that coaches may be going into recruiting without understanding their budgets. I expect coaches to be very aggressive for the top 100 players and the very conservative for the rest. I would expect more late commits than in the previous few cycles

2) BIG LOSER -- kids on schools with big rosters. I think the roster cap could be the biggest potential impact for a majority of women's lax programs. No idea what the cap will be, but I can't see it being higher than 45, more than likely 40. Some schools may need to do some serious trimming, including potentially some 2025 commts

3) BIG WINNER -- Revenue driving women's sports. Despite what some folks on the internet say, if these payments are coming from the school, they are subject to Title IX. Expect women's hoop and volleyball to get the lion's share, but can see benefits acrosse women's sports

4) BIG BIG LOSER -- non-revenue male sports. No 2 ways about it. With new revenue streaming coming and Title IX compliance in effect, cuts need to come form somewhere. Expect to see many expensive low-revenue men's sports gone. Expect to see many men's track, wrestling and golf programs cut

5) BIG BIG WINNER -- SEC and BIG 10 women's lax. More $$ in play now and no scholarship caps. Can't see a few programs really leverage the lack of scholarship caps. Within 4 years, I expect Michigan, Penn State, USC, Florida, Clemson to be perennial top 10 teams. Will be interesting to see what these coaches do in 2026 recruiting. Will they over committ scholarship $$ before new rules come in place or will they wait until the 27s to bring in a full class of girls on full rides.

6) X factors -- Northwestern, Stony Brook, Hopkins, Denver. With these changes on the horizon, Northwestern could start very easily being outspent by a majority of the teams in its conference. Will it be able to compete? With Stony Brook no longer being on a level playing field with top schools and his kids graduated, how long does Joe S stay? I assume he may try to fundraise to get additional $$, but I think this could be the trigger at him leaving. Same story for Denver and Hopkins, if I were betting, I think they move to AAC sooner rather than later.

"Don’t get me started on the chaos engulfing big-time college football and basketball. As I’ve long pointed out, we are the only country in which institutions of higher learning provide significant entertainment for the masses (Canada? Very low-key compared with us). But we always pretended the priority was Education. Ha! I’d love to know how many of these transfer portal people ever see a classroom in their new port of call.

It’s important to identify the true villains here. It’s not the coaches. It’s not the athletic directors. And it’s certainly not the, ahem, “student-athletes.” It’s the school presidents who have been seduced by the dollar sign. None of this insane conference realignment, or any other examples of the new nonsense, takes place without their approval."

It’s a billion dollars sports entertainment industry under the veil of education and amateurism. Everyone was making millions… presidents, colleges, coaches, staff, agents, tv companies, Nike, except the “student athletes “. Now they want a piece of the pie. I agree it’s not fun to watch anymore. There’s no roster continuity. There’s no loyalty. But I don’t blame student athletes one bit.

As the concept of student-athlete starts to turn into athlete-student , they stop representing what a university is supposed to be all about. I’d much rather watch a pro game and support the university academically only.

keep on eye on this.  roster limits could be coming- for all sports- forcing coaches to start shrinking #s.  some are doubtful as there may be legal challenges, but nonetheless, that's the story.  it's also a bit unclear on roster vs dressing vs scholarships, etc.

Long time lurker on this forum, has there been any talk or statements given about Stony Brook / CAA stance on revenue sharing regarding this case? I'm of the opinion if adopted Olympic sports on campus would cease to exist, particularly a team that has had lots of success as of recent. Was reading the EADA report for the University and saw that the institution supported athletics by providing $151k in deficit funding for reporting year 2022-2023. If these new rules are adopted at the FCS level, I find it very hard to believe that football programs across the country wouldn't increase their scholarship count and cut other men's sports to avoid title IX balancing, especially at a university that is bleeding $$$ and looking to find funds to support revenue generating sports. Trying to get as informed on this as possible, this has the potential to change college athletics as we know it. Hoping higher ups make the right decision if it comes down to it.
