Saturday night saw an absolute thriller between #23 SBU and #17 Pitt (ACHL rankings). The Seawolves took the victory 4-3 in sudden death OT.
After a scoreless first period, the Seawolves reeled off three goals in the second, including one in the final 15 seconds, to put an exclamation point on a dominant 20 minutes. Pitt showed serious fight in the third, scoring in the first 45 seconds to send a jolt of energy through the team. They scored nearly a carbon copy of their first goal four minutes later (a pass across the crease that was buried by a weakside winger) to cut their deficit to 2-3. Chances for both sides continued over the next 10 minutes, during which the SBU netminder made numerous key stops, but the Panthers ended up tying it with six minutes left by banging home a rebound. Pitt could have won it in regulation, but a big save in the final minute sent the game to overtime.
In OT, thanks to a pair of late penalties in regulation, the sides started 3-on-3 instead of 4-on-4. SBU had a brief 30-second power play when they killed off their penalty and still had a remainder on the Pitt penalty, but they couldn't convert. With two less men on the ice, the chances came often and the action was frenetic. In the closing seconds, Pitt had the puck in their offensive zone, but the puck squirted away to set up a potential breakaway. SBU got their first, raced up ice, and buried a shot in the top shelf with 9 seconds left to send the Red & White charging over the boards in celebration.
I wasn't able to attend Sunday's rematch, but the Seawolves again prevailed in OT, 5-4. A great weekend for The Brook!
