SBU Men's Basketball / Re: 2025-26 schedule

The decline of the CAA has been disappointing. The gap between the America East and CAA has definitely narrowed to the point of almost no recognition now.

The players might be better, but without the possibility of an at large bid to the tournament I don't see the benefit, especially if what is widely reported (regarding the lack of any financial benefit to the university) is true.

Apparently there was letter from Hellibron to season ticket holders as well as a phone call from Coach Ford. I don't know the details. Anyone have any more info??

When (seems inevitable at this point) O’Connor joins next, do we have any confidence that Geno can put together a roster that doesn’t finish in the bottom of the CAA next year?

Looks like athletics is not a point of emphasis at all with the new president either- more of the same (academics only, less than a high school attendance of students for any on campus game)

I don't see how Stony Brook can compete in this new landscape. Geno's excuse every year is that the team doesn't have enough time to "gel." There's a very high possibility we will never have a talented 4-5 year player again in our uniform.

And Geno's isn't the type of coach that can coach up a bunch of 1 year "free agents."

This might be the beginning of the end for us and this program. I hope I'm not being too pessimistic but the future of this program doesn't look good at this point in time.

I highly doubt Geno is going anywhere. HB will probably give him one more year. But maybe without a permanent president on board- he gets some leeway to cut him loose early? The CAA is a very tough league. I don't think the University will be too happy about terminating two coaches before the expiration of their contracts (although this is the norm at many big athletic institutions obviously)

Again, we need an identity. Either we are ALL IN on athletics or we are out. That's the reality of today's NCAA landscape. I feel like we half one half foot in and the results are abysmal outside of a good rebound football season. Basketball outside of last year & the Warney years have been mediocre, as well as one playoff run in football in 2018 after Hofstra's program closed, and one World Series run. We haven't been competitive in baseball in a long time either.

Maybe our move to the CAA was premature? I'm not sure what's the ultimate goal when barely 50 students show up to any game with an enrollment of 30,000+?

Unfortunately, Cosh is not a long term answer. If he repeats another successful year like this one, he's gone. He even admitted at one of his acceptance speeches for coach of the year that "most people told me not to take the Stony Brook job" which I found shocking.

On paper, this university should have everything necessary to have a successful athletics program. High endowment, large student body enrollment, good rankings and international recognition, and very little competition locally or regionally (except maybe Rutgers and St John's),
etc.

But, the apathy around our sports on campus is shocking. The student attendance at these games is atrocious. Stony Brook was always a "commuter" school, but the apathy is at all time high. The students are not engaged at all. I think more students go to my local high school game than a stony brook game.

This was not the case when I was there 2006-2010. It's only gotten worse and Helibron is mostly to blame. Pray that we get a new President of the university that sees the potential and invests heavily in it. Otherwise, I have no clue why we jumped into the CAA. Either we are all in, or we are all out.
Otherwise, this is just a waste of time and money. There's a reason why another sponsor hasn't taken over for Island Federal Bank for the naming rights of the basketball arena either.

Geno is not a good coach. I think that's obvious at this point and time. He had a great run last year with some 5th year young men that were ballers and could create their own shot. He is completely incapable of competiting in today's changed college landscape.
Do we even have a "general manager" of NIL like most other schools do? A coach can't possible manage on their own. I like Geno personally, and he seems like a straight shooter and honest guy. But the results have been a total disaster this year.

Unless we devote ourselves to a total change in culture, it's going to be more of the same. In today's sports landscape, you can't be on a budget. Stony Brook is trying to have it both ways and the results are terrible. You need to either be ALL IN or ALL OUT. Otherwise we are wasting money that can be better spent elsewhere, and thats a shame because I am still a huge fan.

Does Geno ever draw up any plays? Or is it just- go  figure it out and chuck any shot you want? I got the notification that the game was tied at the 2 minute left mark- wish I didn’t turn it on though …

Disaster. We might not win another game the rest of the year

I can’t see SH pulling the trigger and letting Geno go regardless of this year’s results. His CAA run last year I think bought him another year at least

We desperately need some size: this team can’t defend at all. It’s going to be a long season or CAA opponents just lighting us up.

We don’t really have much of a winning formula. Once we get really hot with shooting - this team is very very limited in terms of playing winning basketball otherwise. The pick and roll game is nearly nonexistent. We barely score in the paint. Nothing come easy. And we don’t shoot the 3 ball well either. So how can we win any CAA games? I don’t know…

The lack of playing time for Nyarko is shocking. I thought he was a lock for the starting lineup when the season started. The thought was that he was everything that we were missing- athleticism (especially in the paint), good pick and roll guy, highlight reel finishes. Can a reporter please ask Geno why this guy isn't playing??

I'm sure Geno expected more than him as well-- otherwise he would have recruited more size for the team. Is he being disciplined for some reason we don't know about? Something is not adding up.

But this team is abysmal so far, and the results can't get much worse up to this point so not sure what's going on?

Agree- still too early to panic. We started very slow last year as well. Not sure why we continue to schedule these tough opponents to start every year.

So either the Central Michigan game was the second coming of the "Miracle on Ice", or we are not as bad as the rankings say we are. I believe its the latter. It's definitely been a brutal start to the season, but I think they will start to turn things around. We have too much talent on the roster to be the WORST TEAM IN ALL OF DIVISION ONE. I also know a lot of talented seniors left last year's squad, but there's no way we go from ONE SHOT to the NCAA tourney to a KenPom of 350+ in a single season. Need to see a couple of more games before I'm convinced we are THAT BAD.
