SBU Football / Re: SBU 2025 Recruiting

Don’t put all the blame on UNLV Sluka bares responsibility as well and might find it hard to get another FBS School to offer him. I believe SBU will try and get a QB from the Portal with more than one year of eligibility
Last time Sluka was in the portal he lingered for a long while and then he had to settle for an opportunity to compete for a starter position (at UNLV) as there were  arm concerns. His performance at UNLV (albeit 3-0) didn't put those concerns to rest. This year he has to overcome all that plus concerns he quit on his team over money (unwritten promise or not).

I agree an FBS scholarship offer (forget NIL cash) for QB1 may not be forthcoming for Sluka.

I was thinking local guy (Kellenberg) who absolutely tore it up v very good FCS (and limited FBS)  competition at Holy Cross. And we need a QB. But it is farfetched and he might have crossed FCS off his list long ago.

Haven't been on in awhile, so cycling back to some old news...part of the reason Sluka lingered in the portal so long last year is that he insisted on remaining at, and graduating from, HC, which chased away alot of bigger programs who wanted him there for spring practice. Despite the late start he was able to come in and win QB1 over another QB (HMW) who turned out to be pretty good after Sluka left. As for his arm concerns, completion percentage has always been a mild concern with respect to him...the UNLV numbers were exacerbated by some bad WR play...the sample size was small enough that a few bad routes/dropped balls could have drastically changed his numbers. Having seen all of his UNLV starts, its not a stretch to say he could easily have had a completion percentage over 50%, a bunch more yards, and a few more TD's if the WR's executed. I know "over 50%" isn't overwhelming, but with more yards and TD's we'd be talking about his arm alot less at 50%. This time around I have no doubt that the UNLV divorce coupled with the completion percentage hurt him drastically...he should do big things at JMU.

A 4 or 5 win first season could validate his vision.

I say this not being critical of the coach, his ability, or the fact that we hired him...but a 4-5 win first season would honestly be a miracle...between transfers out, people graduating, and Cosh not having his own recruiting class, how much better can we expect the team to perform over this year's squad? Going from no wins and a bunch of blowouts to actually winning 4-5 games sounds like a leap. I think it will take at least 2 years before we can really begin to assess this hire.

I thought Chesney would be a good fit for this program and the fact that JMU is interested in him shows that I’m not only one that likes him.

I’ve been seeing everyone’s comment about who SBU will hire but whoever gets the job should have a good resume so I’m not concerned about players not wanting to come here. A good coach should be able to draw talent and hopefully win especially if he’s done it already

He's been a purported finalist for JMU and SU, or said otherwise, a top 25 and P5 FBS school, he will not be making the "jump" from HC to SBU

the only exception i could see is if he was from the brookhaven area, or his spouse, etc.  that does happen sometimes.

-He's not...PA I believe, but all NCAA coaching jobs have been within an hour and a half of each other, including 2 in same town (Salve Regina-->Assumption-->HC). He's not coming to LI

And his stock was VERY high last year following an undefeated regular season and going toe to toe with eventual champ SDSU in playoffs (don't let score deceive you, was tied pretty late in game). If he was going anywhere, he leaves after last year...instead an extension was negotiated in January. Plus he came from Assumption, I suspect he wants to stay in that area, may only leave if BC opens up

Some of you have to get a realistic view of the depths to which this program has sunk. I am a PL alum and a SBU fan, and the comments here are laughable...suggesting SBU could be the toughest D DeMorat has seen this year, remembering when "lowly" PL teams were automatic wins. Holy Cross is 7 in the country, has beaten an FBS team (and a solid one at that as Buffalo is atop their division in their conference and their only other 2 losses are to a Big10 School and a school just out of top 25, and they have in conference wins over teams that have beaten power conference teams). Fordham has an explosive offense that is putting up eye popping numbers and the only reason they do not own a win over an FBS team (and an undefeated record) is that their defense is prone to allow other teams to put up eye popping numbers as well. Fortunate for them, I am not sure Stony Brook is in a position to do that, regardless of the competition. Oh yeah, Fordham has also beaten 2 other teams from the vaunted CAA this year. Don't get me wrong, I love SBU and want them to succeed, but some people here seem to have an inflated sense of the strength of this program. The lone bright spot this year (hopefully) will be the development of McKee...I think he's for real, and from a personal standpoint, he has a good matchup for his first start, maybe against Fordham he can put up some confidence building numbers...but if the margin of Fordham's victory is less than 2 TD's, I'd be shocked.
