Recap article of yesterday's game featuring quotes from Coach McCombs and Anastasia Warren. Their next game will be announced on Monday at 7 p.m.

Early indications are it will be against a 2-4 seed. So expect a matchup between #6 Baylor (second seed), #14 Tennessee (third) or #18 Kentucky (fourth)

Hi all,

Just passing along an article my friends from The Statesman wrote for their annual Spring Preview

https://www.sbstatesman.com/2021/03/03/veteran-led-stony-brook-baseball-picked-to-return-to-championship-glory/

Matt Senk, On performance last season: "I was really happy with the way we were pitching and playing defense,” Senk said in an interview with The Statesman. “That being said, we still weren’t where we wanted to be offensively. When we came home and had our five-game homestand, the bats started coming around. We had all three things clicking, getting ready to go into our first conference weekend.”

Chris Hamilton, on returning for fifth season: “My plan to come back here for this fifth season was to win another championship,” Hamilton said in an interview with The Statesman. “It’s not really about myself going out and trying to improve my draft stock.”

Evan Giordano, on returning to the field: “I really just focused on my mental game,” Giordano said about the adjustments he made in an interview with The Statesman. “Obviously, taking a lot of reps in the cages and everything, but just working on being okay with failure. It’s a game of failure. Taking every at-bat as a new at-bat and every game as a new game.”

SBU Men's Lacrosse / Re: SB Lacrosse 2021 Season
« on: March 03, 2021, 02:25:18 pm »
It was a pleasure getting to write a feature profile on Devin. It has been great watching his role increase and seeing him step up as a leader at SBU.
One cool fact that didn't make the cut is that he is the first Queensbury HS defender and second alum to play D-I lacrosse.

'Swiss Army Knife' Devin O'Leary Relishes Offensive Contribution, Too
https://stonybrookathletics.com/news/2021/3/3/mens-lacrosse-swiss-army-knife-devin-o-leary-relishes-offensive-contribution-too.aspx

Quote
O'Leary has already found his way to the back of the net once this season — scoring in the team's season-opening 20-8 victory against Sacred Heart. He also contributed an assist during the "Battle of Long Island" rivalry game against Hofstra last weekend.

O'Leary's knack for beating his opponents to the ball has been a big factor in finding two-way success. That has been something evident since the Queensbury, N.Y-native began playing lacrosse in the seventh grade, as an attackman.

O'Leary's potential and talent earned him a spot on the Queensbury High School lacrosse team's roster as a freshman, albeit on the bench. That did not stop O'Leary from improving on all aspects of the game to be an asset to the team anywhere on the field.

"It was a lot of hard work going to the gym and working out," O'Leary said. "I remember some nights where it would just be me on the field with my stick and 10 bright orange balls shooting at a net."

Now a starter at long stick midfielder for the Seawolves, O'Leary credited carrying over his two-way success in college to several Stony Brook alumni, including long-stick midfielders Justin Pugal and Ryland Rees.

"You don't have to be a captain to be a leader," O'Leary said. "Coach Gilardi always preaches to do the right thing, not the easy thing. A big part of being an upperclassmen is taking responsibility, along with the rest of the senior class, for the younger guy."

Hi all, Ken Fermin from WUSB Sports back here with another round of pre-match insights. I'll also cover some of what Coach Gilardi had to say in our interview this week.

Firstly, it felt great calling lacrosse action for the first time in what felt like forever-- even if the stadium was virtually empty off the field and in the press box. The team played great throughout the contest, something Gilardi credited coaches Brazle and Chanenchuk for.

Dylan Pallonetti- The star of the show, set a program record with a double-hat trick in his debut. He looked even better in person than on your computer, and played like the most experienced athlete on the field. Don't be surprised if teams begin doubling him and open scoring windows for CVG/Haun.

Being Ranked- MLAX has gone from unranked to Top-20 in eight games under Gilardi... Wow! Coach credited his ast. coaches and players of buying into the system and the growth from year 1 to year 2.

Offense- Unsurprisingly, looked great. It seemed like there were always two or three options available to score on most drives. 11 goals were scored by their attackmen (only 5 if you subtract Pallonetti's)

Defense-  Something the team believes has ‘tremendously improved’ compared to last year, and it shows. Coach noted practice has become "much closer" in battles compared to last season. The bottom three-D's of Cassidy, Sabella and Trenkle provided excellent resilience against attackers trying to go in front of the crease. They pushed Sacred Heart over 5 yards away from the goalie on most drives and prevented several shots from reaching the goalie. It will be fun watching the trio take on UAlbany's offensive front later this season.

Midfield- The team is confident they have three full lines that can step up when needed to complement the attack. Technically, more middies scored for SB than attackmen (5 mid- 4 Att).

Faceoffs- It may take a couple more games before the refs get settled with the rule change, but Conlon-Deskewicz played great. I expect both to continue splitting time in games.

Goalkeeping- Palma preformed well even though he didn't face as many shots as King. Palma kickstarted several offensive transitions that led to goals. That is impressive to me, considering it is something Herbert excelled at doing while playing for the Chiefs in the OJALL. Nothing is permanent, but I wouldn't be shocked seeing Palma get the start this weekend.

Also, having two lefty goalies is just a coincidence, but it does help the team prepare for games against other left goalies-- like this weekend v. Bryant

Facing Bryant- They dominated on the attack vs SB last season. Coach noted the Seawolves will have to match their opponents physical gameplay and aggressiveness to win. One key should be to avoid allowing the Bulldogs from going on big runs
Bryant's best playmaker is probably Logan McGovern, who had 1 G, 4A v. Providence. He probably delivered the second-best performance by a redshirt-freshman last Sat., behind Pallonetti. The team will have to also watch out for Mac O'Rourke-- if he plays. He can shoot and score from almost anywhere in the offensive zone .

Remember to tune in to WUSB Sports as the Seawolves take on the Bryant Bulldogs this Saturday at LaValle Stadium. Pre-game show begins at 11:45 AM.

Hi all, Ken Fermin here. You may know me as one of the voices for Stony Brook Athletics on America East TV and WUSB FM. With less than 24 hours till the MLAX's season opener, I thought I would share some insight heading into it. I also spoke with Coach Gilardi earlier this week and included some of his thoughts via quotes (don't worry, everything was on the record).

Staying Safe- The team was very strict on following safety protocols on and off the field. Living on campus, players are only around the general student body when they pick up food at the take-out dining halls. Otherwise student-athletes are likely isolated in their rooms or at the workout rooms/stadium.

Setting the bar- The seniors will set the bar. However, Gilardi says everyone understands the system much better than last season. Arguably, the team's biggest improvement this offseason was a better understanding the defensive system.

Michael Bollinger- Was with the team over the fall, but graduated/accepted a job over the winter. Kept coaches in the loop throughout the entire process and the team is very proud of their former goalie.

Goalkeeping- I would not be surprised if there is no true No.1 goalie until playoff time. Gilardi says all three have looked impressive, with Liam being "the most improved player of the program since last season."  However, I would expect Herbert/ Palma to start every other game, similar to Saros/Rinne in the NHL, this season.

Scheduling- This team went through a lot of schedules. Several other opponents were penciled in for tomorrow's game before SHU. Both LAX programs aren't shy about building "top-10" schedules and the men are quite happy having No.3 Syracuse on it. Unfortunately, the pandemic probably cost the team competing against IVY/ Big-10 schools for the time being.

Being tabbed AE favorites- Gilardi thinks it was bold, considering he hasn't faced an AE team yet as the SB head coach. He is confident Stony Brook can be a top-10 program.

Sacred Heart- They have some "elite" offensive players and play aggressive defensively the whole game. One key to winning will be countering the '10-man zone ride' the Pioneers defense excelled at vs SB last season

Starting lineup tomorrow- "That’s a great question. I have no idea.”

My pre-game thoughts- Excitement and Hope: Tomorrow is the first MLAX game in 11 months. As different as the circumstances are surrounding the Bryant game and tomorrow's, there's no denying the satisfaction of seeing them compete again. There is a lot of hype surrounding this team, and for good reason. There are a lot of seniors on this team playing with a huge chip on their shoulder-- partly because they know how quickly the opportunity can be taken away, partly because of the one-and-done vs UMBC in the '19 Semis. But with five top-ranked teams in the conference, it feels like the athletics program is on the horizon to finding the same successes it had a decade ago (BASE CWS Finalists, LAX Qtr Finalists, etc.)

Please join me and the rest of the WUSB crew tomorrow for MLAX's opening day game, starting at 11:45 AM on WUSB 90.1 FM. We we also be broadcasting the WBB weekend series vs MAINE, with game one immediately following lacrosse.
