"final- 28-6, which is right in line with a usual hampton game."

I have to get a word in about Hampton. What are they doing with this program? It hasn't won a game in how long? And when you watch them play, you see why.

Yeah, Hampton is an HBCU, but they have athletes. There are plenty of coaches out there who have built programs grabbing all the athletes they could get and then teaching them the game. It's really the only way you get better talent to even give you the time of day. The less-talented players have to know what they are doing out there, and that's on the coaching.

What I see from these guys is bad passing, standing around on defense, lots of things that are corrected by better coaching and not as much better talent. If Hampton wants to build a program and compete, it has to make changes at the top.

Go get Rick Sowell.

I have my doubts any changes will be made.

As an alum who has covered the program since Division III, to see them not make the playoffs twice in row after never failing to do so from 2002-2023, I'm not happy with what I see from the macro point of view.

Zooming in a little, I do like Jamo's rebound year, I like the improvement on faceoffs, I tolerate the youth and lack of experience on offense. Barring any negative transfer portal developments, there is a lot of upside here. Which is why I think the staff gets another year to turn it around.

Once again, though, I still can't get past two overtime losses and a one-goal regulation loss in which they held a late fourth quarter lead in all three games. That wonderful year Jamo had has gone to waste, just like Dylan Pallonetti's last two seasons.

Dump on Jim Nagle all you want, at least he got his teams into the playoffs. Not his fault he had to combat an Albany juggernaut most of his time at SB. And those Albany teams with the Thompsons and Connor Fields were better than anything they have had to face in the CAA so far.

Maybe you write off last year due to injuries, but the excuses dwindle a bit with this team.

Not quite. Richmond is 7-0, Delaware and Rhode Island are 6-1, SB, Villanova and UNH are 5-2.

With Delaware out of postseason, that means there will be a mad rush to nail down the top 4 spots. Richmond has only faced Delaware among the top teams so they'll be going to secondary and tertiary tiebreakers should they lose to William and Mary (unlikely) and Rhode Island beats Bryant (highly likely).

So that leaves two spots (assuming the CAA sends four again) for the three 5-2 teams. There are another three teams with 4-3 records.

Just win next week, baby. And let the chips fall where they may. No matter what, a highly successful turnaround this season.

This season is a disaster. Most underachieving team ever to wear the Stony Brook uniform.

A mutual friend of ours hinted that this finish might have a negative impact on Pallonetti's draftability. He has to take some blame for this even if his offensive production was solid all year.

But the biggest target for blame has to rest with the coaching staff. You had two of the top scorers in the country and you don't even make your conference playoffs?

Was this team properly prepared for games, were they being correctly utilized? There are a lot of questions going into next year.

And the worst of it is, why would any top players come here after the experience Pallonetti had?

This is just a disastrous season

Not even making the CAA tournament is a huge undeperformance. This is way better than the Nagle years but that's not saying much

No, it isn't better.

Ever since we joined the America East back in '02, we never failed to make the conference tournament. This would set a very bad precedent.

Much worse when you have the best player in the conference in Dylan Pallonetti. This team was supposed to give Delaware a run for its money because the Blue Hens lost some key players to graduation. Instead, it's the most underachieving team Stony Brook has ever fielded.

The middle third of the field has been their bugaboo all year, and the midfield play hasn't lived up to the advance hype either. Goaltending has had its lapses but has been mostly good overall. Unfortunately, it's a bad look for the coaching staff right now.

They have a fighting chance by beating Hofstra and having Drexel beat Monmouth. Drexel needs to beat Monmouth and have Hofstra beat us because we have the tiebreaker over them.

Know what sucks? The Drexel-Monmouth game is at 3 while we play at noon. So we can win but won't know our fate until later in the day.

I called the game, of course, and agree on all points, particularly the new faces and lack of mistakes.

I often say you need to make hay while the sun shines, in this case, win the games you're supposed to win, taking some pressure off in games that might be harder to win, like Delaware.

I believe, however, that the Seawolves need to win out to lock down a playoff spot beyond any reasonable doubt. Splitting against Towson and Delaware is not bad, but you've already lost to Towson. It makes Delaware a must-win. Good thing they need to play each other and somebody has to lose.

Play like this, though and your chances get dramatically better.

I could see them take on Hofstra in the same situation they were last year. Win and you're in, lose and you're out.

Statesman Sports Editor Mike Anderson asked me to share:

The Statesman is the largest student-run news organization that has been serving the Stony Brook University community since 1958. We are the go-to source for anything Stony Brook related, including sports and student life, with a team of student writers and editors who work around the clock to deliver breaking news on campus.

We've covered protests, changes in policy, human interest stories and always strive to be a voice for the members of the Stony Brook community. This past year, we delved into how the Israel-Palestine conflict is playing out amongst students and international communities; broke news on major changes made in our athletics staff; and started producing three weekly podcasts, ranging from advice for medical students to in-depth analyses of university athletics.

Our writers have won awards at the local, state and national level, and our content is ever-improving with support from our community.  This year alone, we continued to bring back printed editions after the pandemic hiatus, rebuilt our advertising relationship with local businesses and redesigned our website. The response from our students, faculty,  administration and alumni has been overwhelming with positivity and support, but this has not been an easy transition.

We need your help keeping our independent press alive.

To continue providing our award-winning coverage, we need donors like you to help keep the independent press at Stony Brook alive with up-to-date multimedia equipment, sending our writers to cover important events in the community and keeping our student workers employed.

The Statesman is vital to the Stony Brook campus. We provide checks on school administration and student government, sharing the stories of students whose voices are calling to be heard.

We hope you consider donating to our cause.

What he said was true, though.

And it does answer a few questions we had concerning a potential buyout. As in where would the money come from.

I would have to look it up, but I remember Steve Pikiell's job being listed in the nursing department. In other words, to pay the salaries coaches on the mid-major level traditionally get, SB did some creative budgeting. By keeping Chuck on, nothing changes there, and they don't have to come up with two years' pay all at once. Or deal with state employment policies.

Again, need to dig a little deeper, but at the time Chuck was hired, all coaching positions were subject to the same regulations as other University jobs, meaning you could obtain permanent appointment after a certain number of years in service. That means you can't get fired but can get reassigned. As Kornhauser and Espey were among others.

They still do have to pay a successor though, and he won't come cheap.

Time to chime in.

First, good work Mike Anderson of Statesman for clarifying Chuck's status.

All of us on air Sunday night believed they would hold off on replacing Chuck because of the buyout. Unless a donor ponied up for it.

Sam Kornhauser and John Espey were both reassigned in similar fashion and stuck around in non-coaching positions. Consider how long ago those moves were made. Although neither of them were pulling in anywhere near Chuck's salary. When you hire the new coach, you're basically paying for two. And if you're thinking you can get someone for less than you're paying Chuck, fuhgeddaboutit. How do you pay your new head coach less than your still-employed ex-coach?

But it had to happen. This was just the path of least resistance. I said Sunday night that if the program continued to founder, it would render itself ripe for the axe a la Hofstra. Football takes four times as many scholarships as a basketball program. It has to be self-supporting at the very least and that happens only if the team is good.

I also considered who will be doing the hiring. I believe there is a search committee involved and I would be very interested in finding out who will be on it.

President Maurie McInnis has been dead silent when in comes to athletics. Stark contrast to Shirley Strum Kenny whose support made the upgrade to Division I possible. And Samuel Stanley rode the baseball team bandwagon to Omaha.

Meanwhile, lots of reasons to be optimistic about basketball, particularly the women. Glad that disaster of a football season is behind us.

Mike brought up a very good point last night.

There is a rule that when you are under contract, you have to be informed that you will not be offered another contract with a year left on it. Deadline is March 31.

So, there are two things in play.

Shawn was not informed of such when he had one year left, so he served out his last year and continued without one.

His new contract is retroactive to the end of his last deal, so he has two years left on it. I'm guessing if he got a raise, he got that retroactively too.

But because of that rule, the university has to inform him by March 31 next year if he will not be renewed. So he really has only one year to do anything significant. That is, if they care what he does. I'm also thinking that's why he continued without a contract because if they just cut him loose, it would be in violation of that rule. Better to just extend him and kick the decision downfield.

When a change is made, a selection committee will be formed. Who will be on it? It can be lots of different people, including student athletes, believe it or not. They will establish parameters for the job posting, interview the candidates and make the recommendation to Maurie McInnis, who would do the actual hiring.

Wokeness?

Quite the opposite. I think sometimes they're trying to put the fans to sleep.

SB doesn't have to care about sports. The people in the Athletic Dept need to care about sports. That's what they're there for.

Given that, Jim Fiore was a Shirley Strum Kenny hire. She was on board, and clearly wanted someone who was aggressive.

I think Shawn was chosen as a reaction to Fiore and the mess he made. Kind of like Bob Lemon after Billy Martin put his foot in his mouth in 1978. He was the low-key answer to Fiore's bluster. But Stony Brook needed that bluster, just not the other baggage. Plenty of people out there who fit the bill.

All mid-majors are the minor leagues for coaches. If you get a good one, count on losing that coach to a bigger school eventually. Then you look for the next one. Steve Pikiell is one example, Caroline McCombs is another, Lars Tiffany is an even better one because he's a National Champion in his sport. Even Rick Sowell upgraded when Navy picked him up, and Anthony Gilardi is good as gone if he gets Stony Brook back into the NCAA consistently.

You can get lucky with a Matt Senk or a Joe Spallina, but you can't count on top coaches sticking around very long if opportunity knocks.

It hasn't officially been announced yet but it appears Shawn has been extended retroactive to the end of his last contract.

That means he would be entering the second year of a three-year deal. There's obviously more to the story and we're trying to get at it, but he'd have two years to get something going.

I get the feeling that a lot of people have been cut some slack due to COVID and are now being given a chance to see what they can do in a post-COVID world.

You can argue that some of those people underperformed before COVID, what makes anyone think they'll do any better after?

You can also argue that it's unfair to judge performance during COVID unless your job was to deal with it directly.

And then more questions come up...

- Who do you replace him with?

- Who among those qualified wants the job?

- How much do you trust a Stony Brook selection committee (and there would be one) to make the right choice?

- How long would it take for the process to complete its course?
