SBU Men's Basketball / Re: Looking ahead to 2026-27

Shosh vs. O'Connor.....pick one; doubt we can afford both.  The rest of the list I agree with.  Need another Pratt and need a couple of bigs to start.  Early close to portal will tell us a lot.

Really like that the portal is only open for 15 days, so we'll know who we've got rather early on.  Now if the NCAA only mandated that portal players stay a minimum of 2 years, I'd be more of a believer in this entire "free agent" system.

Yeah, only 3 showed up. Good fight at end, but too little, too late. Not one of Geno’s best efforts; hardly made any adjustments, except for fouling at the end. Our front line was abused, particularly in the first half, and it was tough to recover from. Shosh will be too expensive to keep (unfortunately), and I would certainly let Goods walk. Collin, Simmon, Butler, Valentiniy, Gorman should all be back. Need another Pratt, and some Bigs next year. But, I digress…

One and done would be a monumental failure.  Beat Campbell, and we have a no-pressure game against UNCW, who in the back of their minds, have to remember that first half at SBU arena.

I strongly suspect Goods and Shosh are one-and-done here. I heard big money for the former, big big money for the latter. It's hard to stand in the way of them, and it's unfortunate that we aren't likely able to keep up with the joneses. BUT ... Geno and Co. did find some great talent themselves, namely those two, Pratt and Brown. Just gotta keep on doing it.

Goods hasn't help his cause with his weak play down the stretch.  Very coincidental with his "signing with an agency".  I think the question is whether we want to keep Shosh or Collin.  Don't think we can afford both, and even if we could, they'd probably step all over each other with playing time and role.  Brown was a major disappointment IMO, with some occasional flashes of shooting brilliance.  Pratt was a one in a million find.  Whether Geno can find another Pratt remains to be seen.

But if we win, Drexel loses AND W&M wins, we are in a 3-way tie, and drop to 7th, by virtue of round robin tie-breaker.

Didn’t play well overall. Our bigs guns: Goods, Andrej, and Brown never showed up. Simmon was outstanding on both ends. Oleg certainly over-achieved. All that said, a very gutty effort as a team unit though. Turning point, imo, is when we had 3 point lead in 2nd half, and Goods missed 4 FT’s in a row. Never recovered from that.

Check out the Sun Belt Conference’s tournament. I’d say this definitely emphasizes the regular season 🤣. https://x.com/thefieldof68/status/2027622899192877480?s=46&t=_0k7SEdo93-_6CvjA-r49w

That's absolutely wild.  Certainly more equitable, but NE/A&T would potentially have to play 7 games in 7 days :)  Also, Top 4 seeds sitting around for a week. Would have to end regular season a week earlier.  Certainly there are Pros/Cons to doing it this way.

I'd prefer CAA remain as is, but play the games at higher seeds' home court......at least until the semis.  Playing the entire tournament in DC is flawed, especially since attendance is poor.

Yeah, but we're missing our starting QB.

Gonna be real tough to take this one at their place, minus Pratt. But could the suspension actually create a rallying cry? We’ll see. With our short turnaround, wouldn’t be surprised to see Toby play 8-10 minutes as a backup to Andrej, or as a dual point against some expected backcourt pressure. At least we get Pratt back for the Towson game, which may help us stay afloat in the Top 6.

Bad timing with Hofstra, but got off luck with the 1 game. A little odd that SBU delivered the msg on behalf of the CAA, as if SBU was doing the suspending.

Great job by Oakes (as usual).  Biggest game of the year, no doubt.  Run the table from this point and we're a 3.  Defeat Monmouth, and we have a good shot at the 4.  Lose to Monmouth, and we're gonna need some help to get the 4.  One game at time, of course, lots can happen from here on out. Gonna be a battle at their place.

What a great list, Checkmate!   Glad to see that you're still active.

Not sure if you're strictly college -> college, but Amari Williams (Drexel) from 2023-24, is playing for Boston Celtics.

Great write-up, Oakes!

I think everyone will agree that this is a MUST win!  And yes, Simmons has proved his worth offensively AND defensively.  He is deserving of more minutes IMO, and should be taking some shots away from Brown, who hasn't been running on all cylinders the last few weeks.

Go SBU!

Great win boys!  Showed some real character pulling out that game, down 4, with a little over a minute remaining. In 4th now. Let’s keep it going!
