While Hofstra deals with Alabama, UNCW goes back at it on Tuesday against a familiar foe – Yale – in the NIT.

I just figured I'd start this thread rather than us tacking things onto the end of the Campbell game.

Goods to the portal. Sigh.

I do not have Nahar or Onyekonwu here, even though I think each has eligibility left.

Venom toward Monmouth! I didn't know that was a thing. I thought for sure we'd all be on the Hawks tonight.

I do like that two metro area teams are still playing while the southern teams aren't. I've always worried that Charleston and UNCW would seek greener pastures, even without football, and we'd end up backfilling with some lesser program and sulk about it, but we're holding our own.

The transfer portal was an absolute MOB SCENE at this time last year. It won't open until after the tournament's over – a good thing – and will be open only for 15 days. Inevitably wild though.

I have a feeling its going to be a Hofstra - Monmouth Final. Hofstra has a good shot at winning it all

I think we'll have two great games tonight. Campbell has won or been in every game for more than a month – five point losses to Charleston, UNCW and Drexel, and a four point loss to Wilmington. Butka's just a difference maker. That said, I thought Monmouth was awesome when they were here, and they were my dark horse for the tournament. I just think they go into this game with the two best players on the floor in JRT and McClain.

One really interesting stat that I just saw – McClain, who's just a dynamo, has only taken 13 FTs in the nine games he's played this year. DJ Smith last nine games: 45 FT attempts. You guys probably knew it already, but I only just learned that Campbell took 56 free throws against us. I don't know what our opponents' record is, but that would have been a high water mark for us (50 FTA against Army in December 2000).

I would move on from Geno tomorrow if I could. From my obstructed-view seat, I just think we could use some new energy. It's a solid mid-major job. He hasn't been horrible – four winning records in the six full seasons, two truly truly horrific years and a crummy COVID season. I just think it's run its course and would love to see what somebody else could do.

It's hard though. The portal giveth and taketh away, but more than anything, it has to make the job so much more difficult. And the team harder to follow. And with the students, they could not be more indifferent. The student section was an abomination yet again, even when the team was surging. Even though it was on a Thursday night in January, we had fewer than 1900 fans there for the Hofstra game, which has to be the lowest in series history.

We've done the chicken and egg thing before. Winning brings fans, money brings winning, but if fans bring money – such as a whale who meaningfully backs the program – SBU just doesn't have those people coming through campus. They'd rather fund something groundbreaking across the street, and I think that's outstanding too.

I do give the gameday team credit – they took a step forward this year. And I credit Goldsmith too – she's been at these games talking up how they need to ramp things up. She's been far more present and genuine than McInnis. So that's a start.

one more thought.  i think the reason im so deflated is that this season- for arguably the first or second time ever- we've been a competitive three point shooting team*.  shot selection was better, ball movement, rebounding, and if taken in the right situation, the % increases.  which it did.  we also had quite a few options. (*maybe 2 years ago we shot ok from deep)

and so the reason im even more disappointed is because we finally fix this longstanding issue, and the result is... the same.  complete and premature collapse.

I have to think that this was a combination of having the personnel and of Hipsher being on the bench. There was a seismic change in our offense this year, which coincided with his arrival. Things just flowed better. We looked way more competent than we have in at least the last decade.

It’s interesting for Goods to go into the portal (presumably) coming off a zero point, zero shot game. And he was invisible during this four game losing streak – 3.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg. And as our only real big guy, that’s tough to overcome.

7
I don’t have the game on. How does Goods have zero shot attempts with 15 minutes left in the game?

In case anybody missed it, Pratt was named All-CAA First Team – a first for us – and Shoshkikj earned All-Rookie honors.

https://caasports.com/news/2026/3/5/mens-basketball-awards.aspx

I'll always wonder whether a monster game in a win at Hofstra would have given Pratt the nod over Davis for POTY.

Worth watching: 10 of the 15 players earning All-CAA accolades have eligibility left. I'll set the over/under for those who transfer out at 6.5.

In the preseason, I said aim for 20 wins, settle for 18. That we're guaranteed an above .500 record is better than I expected for sure. And I thought the league was really solid this year, so to finish mid-table, and really be in position to do much better than that, is pretty good in my eyes.

I really wanted to avoid Campbell – big difference between them and Hampton in the 10 spot.

I strongly suspect Goods and Shosh are one-and-done here. I heard big money for the former, big big money for the latter. It's hard to stand in the way of them, and it's unfortunate that we aren't likely able to keep up with the joneses. BUT ... Geno and Co. did find some great talent themselves, namely those two, Pratt and Brown. Just gotta keep on doing it.

Goods hasn't help his cause with his weak play down the stretch.  Very coincidental with his "signing with an agency".  I think the question is whether we want to keep Shosh or Collin.  Don't think we can afford both, and even if we could, they'd probably step all over each other with playing time and role.  Brown was a major disappointment IMO, with some occasional flashes of shooting brilliance.  Pratt was a one in a million find.  Whether Geno can find another Pratt remains to be seen.

I actually have liked RBIII a lot. He took a while to heat up, but he ended up shooting almost 39 percent from three during conference play. I thought he was a plus defender too.

I believe O'Connor is locked in for another year here – some contractual setup. Bill Simmons was calling for better nicknames rather than just initials, initials involving jersey numbers, et al, a la the above. I got to thinking that "Nutty" would roll off the tongue easily and tie into his Irish name and the popular LI establishment.

We ought to be a small dog on Saturday. Let's hope we bring our A game.

Agree 100% on Soshkikj. it’s hard to see him staying tho, and I could picture him getting poached by one of the bigger schools in our conference or maybe going back to Europe.

As always, a good effort but the team has no inside scoring presence and not very many guards can get to the basket. Hoping for a first round win to salvage the season and everything after that is a bonus.

I strongly suspect Goods and Shosh are one-and-done here. I heard big money for the former, big big money for the latter. I was going to write something about UNCW, but let's please just find a way to get by Campbell. Their backcourt is awesome, and the Butka's been terrific too. We handled them on the glass without him last time. He averaged 9 a game in conference, second behind only Wessler.

13
Tuesday’s game feels somewhat big to avoid going into the tournament with a three game losing streak. Also getting the seventh seed is probably also preferable to avoid UNCW in the round of eight I guess.

The 7 allows us to get Hampton as opposed to Campbell, which is the far superior team. That said, I doubt anyone would be thrilled about getting us in round two.

Worth noting: We have the tiebreaker over Drexel. If they lose at Hofstra (which is locked into the 3 but it's Senior Night), we would leapfrog them with a win. Getting the 6 would mean A&T in the opener and, if we prevail there, Hofstra in the quarters.

Check out the Sun Belt Conference’s tournament. I’d say this definitely emphasizes the regular season 🤣. https://x.com/thefieldof68/status/2027622899192877480?s=46&t=_0k7SEdo93-_6CvjA-r49w

Heilbron said just Saturday in his IG post. I'd be surprised he did a string bet and suspended him for Tuesday too.

Conference player of the year chances are certainly dashed now; a standout effort against his closest competitor – Davis – on Saturday could have swung it.

We're looking at being double-digit dogs now. And as a team, my sense is that 6 or 7 are likely, although as you can see here, the 8's in play also https://x.com/GuardUni/status/2027395062225613110?s=20
