SBU Men's Basketball / Re: Looking ahead to 2023-24

For clarity amidst speculation, neither Jay Young or Bryan Dougher were involved in any inappropriate behavior. That is factual. The rest of the matter is nowhere as clear, but I assume will play out over the next days/weeks.

I dont see jameel coming any where near sbu while hielbron is here. Heilbron blew it when he didnt hire Jay Young. I would rather have a young assistant who has the energy that Pikiel brought to sbu when he built the program. the two head coaches of sbu football and basketball avoid our fan base and have no connection to the community and it shows.

I know nothing about Jay or his connection to the community, and I would have supported hiring him a few years ago, but just looking at results, he took over a Fairfield program that finished at .500 or above in conference six times in the 2010s and made six postseason tournaments. Jay's teams were under .500 in each of his first three seasons and they're under .500 now. Geno's been over .500 twice. That said, I feel like we've seen bad basketball under Geno (better this year), whereas Fairfield plays boring basketball.

Jameel's not coming anywhere near SBU because it would be  i n s a n e  to hire him as a head coach at this point in his life. Maybe someday though.
Jay inherited a disaster from Sydney Johnson, and his first 3 years were spent with cardboard cutouts (covid) and playing in the Bridgeport mausoleum. This is his first year in an actual home arena (same for some of the players). There's another SBU HOF'er who actually has been coaching. Pikiell brought Bryan Dougher back as an assistant, was part of the staff with Jameel's NCAA team, then he brought him to Rutgers, and now he's with Jay at Fairfield.

In four years, Fitzmorris only played in 18 games. Missed an entire season due to injury and another due to redshirt. Thirty-three total minutes across those 18 games. Six points against five turnovers in that same time frame. Let's not pretend this is some magical signing that will push the program to the next level. It's SBU giving someone one more year to "play" college ball, just so Geno Ford can say he landed a Stanford transfer.

We know he hasn't made the rotation at Stanford, but he's only had 2 years playing years and missed his junior season with an injury. He'll have 2 years left at Stony Brook with a medical redshirt for last year. It's an unknown commodity, but we already have a safe bet with Sarvan. I like it
Agree. If he was good enough to be offered by Stanford, he's good enough for Stony Brook to take a chance with him. By no means a wasted scholarship.

Also Fairfield under JY has been pretty underwhelming. Seems like Boals was the right hire that year over JY, but once Boals left, we should have started a new coaching search.
Inherited a mess, and hasn't had a home court advantage in 3 years while their new arena is under construction. With the arena ready next year and some recruits/portal guys, expect them to be much better. Building it the same way Pikes built SBU/RU.

Didn’t know about the home court issue. That does affect a lot. With new Arena would Fairfield be an attractive school for AE, even CAA?

No question they're looking to move, and I believe the CAA is the target. But with all this conference realignment stuff, who the heck knows? The AE board believes they're swallowing the MAAC. The MAAC board thinks they're swallowing the AE. It's entertaining, but at the end of the day nobody really knows jack! :-)

I follow a couple of different boards and the ones with robust game threads are unbearable. There's a lot of emotion on the regular fan boards, but the game threads in particular seem to bring out the worst in knee-jerk, over-the-top reactions and criticisms. People say things maybe they wouldn't if not for getting caught up in the "now" of the moment. Personally, I find trying to type distracts from my focus on the game, but I've never been much of a multi-tasker.

I want to leave Albany behind. Moving to the CAA proves that we are one step above them. Don’t want the illusion that we are on the same level.

I agree, but. I could see SBU pushing to invite UA in as well.

I don't see SBU having any clout other than getting themselves on board. It's a good thing...I'd like to see SBU put the AE and all its members in the rear view mirror.

Who's putting money where their mouth is? Line is 10.5 - 11.5.
Seawolves +10.5
Did not see that coming. Good thing my wagers cost less than a few beers and a cheeseburger at a dive bar.

Part of the problem (how large is subject to debate), is that SBU basketball has evolved into a transfer/juco program. The resurrection of the program took place with primarily 4-year guys going back to the Dougher, Brenton, Joyner teams...rolling into the Warney years. Not saying the support still shouldn't be there, but not the same vibe today.

Maybe I'm just getting too old but I actually like watching dominant defensive presences, which is why Mo Gueye was my favorite player on last year's team. I already graduated college by the time Curry's insane season on the 73-9 Warriors happened. I could be the one out of touch.
You are not alone.

Would like to see SBU get back to the 4-year guys, which is how Pikiell built it. Other than El-amin, don't recall many other juco/transfer types. But GF may be feeling some pressure to win fast at this point.

I have a few expectations for this hire- I'd prefer a local guy who will want to stay here. I think Pikiell really would have stayed here forever but its hard to turn down a Big 10 offer. He loved living here and raising his family locally. Priore, for all his warts, loves being in this area. Despite cost of living and whatnot, Long Island is still IMHO a great place to be. I want a guy with a good pedigree and who can recruit well.

If it were up to me, Speedy Claxton would be my #1 target. He knows NYC and Long Island, was a 1st round NBA draft pick, and seems to be an apt recruiter. He also lives in Dix Hills so you don't have to sell him on Long Island. I'll give Hofstra credit where its due- their team has come a long way with multiple solid recruiting classes.

Jay Young should also get a look but I get the sense that ship has sailed. Again, he's a guy that knows the area and really built the solid Stony Brook defenses that we knew and loved.

I don't love these firms for coaching searches to be honest- I think a comprehensive search by the administration would be sufficient.
Great post.

Disagree on Clayton...no Hofstra guys.

Agree on Young...he should have been the choice back then, should be the choice now. Great coach, great guy, and loyal SBU guy. But as you say, that ship may have sailed.

Agree on search firms...what a joke. AD’s get paid big bucks and then pay big bucks to aid in decisions they should be able to make themselves.

First of all, players absolutely DO read these boards. That is not speculation on my part, that is FACT. Do you really think they're unaware of these boards? What 18-22 year old kid is not going to check out what is being said about him on a public forum?

And because they have a well-deserved athletic scholarship it's ok to take pot-shots at them? I guess your season tickets and stipend donation to Seawolves United entitles you to behave like a cretin. An anonymous cretin.

I would love for Kam and Jakub to encounter Hammer and Lax in an empty parking lot and give them an opportunity to repeat their comments to their faces. Game over.

Could not agree more with southern guy and iBO. Another guy that received some shabby treatment is Petras. Same as Mitchell...good kid, good teammate and hard worker. Congrats to Kam, and look forward to Jakub coming back next year.
