Saturday night saw an absolute thriller between #23 SBU and #17 Pitt (ACHL rankings). The Seawolves took the victory 4-3 in sudden death OT.
After a scoreless first period, the Seawolves reeled off three goals in the second, including one in the final 15 seconds, to put an exclamation point on a dominant 20 minutes. Pitt showed serious fight in the third, scoring in the first 45 seconds to send a jolt of energy through the team. They scored nearly a carbon copy of their first goal four minutes later (a pass across the crease that was buried by a weakside winger) to cut their deficit to 2-3. Chances for both sides continued over the next 10 minutes, during which the SBU netminder made numerous key stops, but the Panthers ended up tying it with six minutes left by banging home a rebound. Pitt could have won it in regulation, but a big save in the final minute sent the game to overtime.
In OT, thanks to a pair of late penalties in regulation, the sides started 3-on-3 instead of 4-on-4. SBU had a brief 30-second power play when they killed off their penalty and still had a remainder on the Pitt penalty, but they couldn't convert. With two less men on the ice, the chances came often and the action was frenetic. In the closing seconds, Pitt had the puck in their offensive zone, but the puck squirted away to set up a potential breakaway. SBU got their first, raced up ice, and buried a shot in the top shelf with 9 seconds left to send the Red & White charging over the boards in celebration.
I wasn't able to attend Sunday's rematch, but the Seawolves again prevailed in OT, 5-4. A great weekend for The Brook!

To be fair it is very costly to build and maintain an arena on campus. Binghampton has a county owned arena conveniently 5min drive from campus. County needs tenant, so giving a very good deal to Binghamton University. It’s a win-win for both. It’s whole lot different for us with no infrastructure to start a hockey. And we have nothing that close to campus that’s good for college hockey standards.

Good for them. The AD said that it would be a revenue stream for the university and surrounding areas. Meanwhile, many years ago I talked to Sean Heilbron about possibly putting it in a D1 ice rink for SBU, and he told me absolutely not. I would never work here. Goes to show you the direction Stony Brook University he’s going, and it is not good.This show us the direction Binghamton and other schools are going, and it ain’t down.
Fire SH and hire an AD who wants sports to be an integral part of SBU. This school is so boring, you can hear William Floyd snoring in his grave

Hockey at SBU would be a dream and a huge success, but the finances of the rink itself and women's scholarships on the other side of it would be a huge financial hit. I see it happening someday though. I'd personally rather have FBS football, but the campus as a whole may disagree with me there. Dream would be SBU has FBS football AND varsity hockey, but all-in that would likely require a 50% increase overall in the athletic budget if not more. Not impossible for a school like SBU, but a big move to make so quickly.
SB should drop football. Nobody goes to games and four or five losing seasons. Look at next years schedule and it gets worse. Heilbon says he is commited to winning but extending priore says otherwise.
Can’t say I disagree. The typical SB student couldn’t care less about football so if it’s a drain on funds that could be used elsewhere, it’s hard to make the case for an FCS program. There are members of this forum that like to have something to follow on autumn afternoons but that’s hardly justification to keep a money losing program. The athletics tail shouldn’t wag the academics dog.

im salivating just from that hockey rink rendition... with the isles vacating the... island, and the rangers/devils across rivers, this could be a huge get.
another reason to follow the cornell model.

Stony Brook University has no plans to build an on-campus ice rink despite the success of the ice hockey club and students’ desires for improvements to campus life.
“Hockey is an extraordinarily expensive sport to run,” Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. said at a media conference in February. “Before we can add another expensive sport like that, we would have to make sure it would make economic sense.”
“I think the hockey team is awesome,” Stony Brook’s Director of Athletics Shawn Heilbron said. “I can’t tell you how many people come up to me and congratulate me on our hockey team, and I say, ‘I wish I could take the credit for them.’” If the team were NCAA, it would be recognized under the school’s athletics banner, and Heilbron would be involved with it.
“I think it’ll create sort of a culture and environment that will keep students on campus for the weekend,” Pete Hall, a former Stony Brook ice hockey player who graduated from the university in 1989, said. “I’ve seen it firsthand that some of the teams we played against that had rinks on campus had students that stuck around on the weekend, and the hockey rinks were filled with students.”
Heilbron said that if the school added another men’s team to its NCAA banner, it would likely need to add three women’s teams to compensate. He is considering field hockey, rowing and equestrian as potential women’s teams to add, but he wants to ensure that any new program would be successful.
“I don’t want to add a sport just to add a sport,” Heilbron said. “It has to make sense for our program as a whole. We have to have a facility for them, but we also have to be able to win and be competitive.”
“Student life on the weekends is dead; everyone goes home,” senior finance major Susana Polanco said. “There should be more activities that will make people want to stay on campus.”
Ice skating would be another activity offered by an ice rink at Stony Brook University.
“I think if you open up recreational ice skating, that would definitely attract people and help campus life out a bit,” freshman psychology major Sophie Peterfreund said.

Building an Ice Rinx, and competing in the D1 NCAA would be a huge hit on long island and SB would make money doing so. The only thing I think that will squash this idea has nothing to do with Hockey but everything to do with adding three womens D1 sport. Field Hockey, Equestrian and Rowing would be a bust.
I would love nothing more for SB to build a Hockey Rinx like this one and compete with the likes of BC, BU, Quinnipiac, Rhode Island.

I think SBU should seriously consider building an indoor skate rink on campus. Expensive, you betcha, but money well spent. SB could rent out the rink to dozens of junior league hockey teams all over LI and have numerous events at the school offsetting expenses associated with building and running the rink. The Arizona Sun Devils, just last season moved up to the NCAA Div1 team and already had their first win against a ranked opponent. SB used to play them every year in the club league and had some great wins...

The sticking point is we need a permanent hockey facility on campus. Add to that about 24-30 male scholarships. Our team is very good -just need funding and a new building on campus.

Its very unlikely. Division I hockey requires a huge budget.... and we need a facility. I don't think there is any plans for D-I hockey at the Brook in the near future.

SB Hockey is looking to go into the NCAA Div 1 but they need a Hockey Arena. I think a Div 1 hockey team on Long Island would do very, very well. They have a petition we all can sign requesting SB go NCAA. I already signed it, i ask you guys do to!!

During halftime at the UMBC BB game last night I noticed a celebration in the lobby about SBU's hockey team championship. I didn't even know that SBU had a hockey team!! How come it isn't covered on the official athletics website? Also, why isn't it included under the banner of the America East Conference?
