Saint John's vs SB 3/22 1pm
« on: March 19, 2014, 09:49:04 am »
Their strength is clearly in their attack- keegan, cernuto, mccardle.  weve beaten the johnnies before, but this may be the first time that its expected they will win, at least according to rankings.  they did beat us two years ago on our home field.

mccardle does it all and makes this offense work.  i have seen them play a few times live.  im pretty sure they have a freshman goalie, as do we.

note that their three losses are to pretty good teams- yale, cuse, and drexel.  the johnnies just beat GT and then Hofstra in OT.  Apparently one of their star attackmen, cernuto, was out against hofstra or at least came out of the game and didnt return.

we had a blip against Manhattan, surrendering 5 in the first Q.  then our defense bucked up in the second half, picking up every GB and making saves.  we also won a lot of faceoffs.  so we kept it to a respectable 8.

id like to take a moment to talk about how good our attack has been playing- rooney has been unstoppable, with both hands.  he drives from x, shoots inside, from the wing, feeds, draws slides.  and runs mid.  schultz has become so much more of a versatile attackman that it lets our entire offense shift in and out of the crease, creating movement and then picks and confusion for the defense.  schultz has a real knack for GBs in traffic.  and easty is easty.

52' with possible rain right before the faceoff.  GO SB

No rain please...looking like it could hit the 60's now.

Can't wait for this game...gotta find a way with this one, especially since they just bet Hofstra

im wondering... will we see rooney at mid or attack?  both?  will corpo run with the second mids?  who will start in cage, johnstone?  and on close, will we see harris, judge, both?

its a little hard to see #s from the webcast, so despite the fact that i watch the games, i cant exactly tell who is there!

Easty and Rogers makes it easy.  Out of the back of the helmet- lettuce.

8-5 halftime with Rogers sticking one wth 4 seconds left.  We have been on the other side of that goal so many times.

SJU goalie is a good player.  Lots of saves early on and two posts we hit.  The Johnnies played well early but too many flags have doomed them so far.

Defense kept the potent SJU attack to only 5 in the first half, by way of not playing too much defense.  Credit Rowe on that too.

Luca has quicky become a good defenseman for us.  Also having a good day is Rowe, Schultz (has lacrosse IQ of someone with way more games under his belt), Vasallo, Johnstone.  Coach really mixed up the mids, Corpo got runs with the first line.  GO SB

so i thought we played really well for most of the game and then SJU shut the door in the 4th with 5 straight goals.  they are a good team.  we almost pulled a nice upset today.  good game to watch.  GO SB

Rough 4th for SBU.  No shots at all, and lots of turnovers. Never seen them go an entire 15 minutes without a shot before!?
But - team put together good 3 quarters (as opposed to 2 in previous games), so they are improving!  Just need a full game.

I think Rodgers and Hughes were spent in that fourth quarter (they both play every offensive possession). Both had some uncharacteristic turnovers in the fourth.

Rowe came off the field a bit gimpy early in the second half and seemed to struggle the rest of the way. Hope he is OK.

Johnstone's save % doesn't reflect it, but I thought he played well. He made some real tough saves.

Curry and Lucatuorto both look pretty good with a long pole in their hands. 3 ground balls each. A couple penalties each, but I really like their games.

Overall, I'm disappointed they didn't win, but still impressed with the team

Sorry can't agree. There are no more excuses for losses like this. You can't blow leads, and you can't keep mailing in quarters or halves anymore. The unforced t/o's and overall sloppy play have to stop. This team isn't young anymore, last years class is 25 gms into their career and it's time to start winning gms like this. I have said this before, this team doesn't play with any sense of urgency. And at this point during the season you have to shorten the bench and play your best kids. Example of this is what has happened with Judge, I only see him on the wings for faceoffs now. Not good at all.

I don't mind a short bench. I just don't think you can have Rogers and Hughes out on EVERY offensive possession. I think they need to give a 2nd line some runs, if for nothing else just to give the first liners a chance to catch their breath.

Let's see what happens this weekend when the AE games start...Hopefully coach shortens his rotation and sticks with the core guys.

Hopefully the goalie situation is settled.   The first midfield should include Andreassi or Rooney...time to stop rotating freshman through.   The 4 man rotation at attack is fine especially if Rooney plays some midfield.   I can't believe Judge is getting limited minutes after starting for the last two seasons and playing well.  He did have a broken thumb early in the season so maybe coach is resting him as much as possible.  I like Curry and Lucky with the poles but not at the expense of Judge's playing time.

I agree with Chris that this team needs a sense of urgency and it has to start this weekend.   Let's go Stony Brook!!!
