10 'New' Men's DI Matchups to Watch in 2023

10.   Stony Brook vs. Delaware
📍 Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium

🗓️ April 15

The CAA welcomes Stony Brook in 2023. Anthony Gilardi had a strong 2022 finishing 9-5 despite his team not being allowed to participate in the America East tournament due to their changing conferences. They should put up a strong challenge to the Blue Hens, who shocked Georgetown in the First Round of the tournament and gave Cornell all they could handle in the second round.

2023 College Lacrosse Conference Predictions
https://laxallstars.com/2023-college-lacrosse-conference-predictions/

Quote
CAA
Delaware found consistency and won the CAA and then knocked off the No.2 Hoyas on Sunday night of the first round of the NCAA Tournament. This was a strong and balanced league in 2022 with each of the teams finishing 3-2 or 2-3 in conference play. Stony Brook comes from the America East. The Sea Wolves were kept out of postseason play due to switching conferences in 2022. They pose the biggest threat to the Blue Hens repeating as CAA champions in 2023.

Pick: Stony Brook

Contender(s): Delaware

Men's Weekend Watch: Week 1 — Regional Rivalries, New Looks and Debuts

Rutgers (-6.5) vs. Stony Brook
📍 SHI Stadium
⏰ Saturday at 1 p.m.

Rutgers made a statement of its own last Saturday with a 20-8 victory over Marist. Ten Scarlet Knights scored at least a goal with Dante Kulas leading all scorers (5G, 3A). Anthony Gilardi and the Seawolves find themselves in a new conference, the CAA, after moving from the America East. Gilardi used the transfer portal to bring in six new players to add to an experienced roster. Keep an eye on this one; it was a one-goal game in 2022.

lost a tough game to #9 rutgers on the road.  this was a good measuring stick.  some notes: https://stonybrookathletics.com/news/2023/2/11/mens-lacrosse-maclachlan-posts-career-day-in-net-seawolves-fall-at-no-9-10-rutgers-in-season-opener.aspx

-intensity was great all game.  some mental mistakes and freshman blips (inside rolls, slide timing, passes intercepted) and some unforgivable (not backing up shots, hanging sticks) but these guys have fight

-just blew too many opportunities, like open looks and EMOs (1/6, yikes!)

-officiating was questionable, mutually, though RU got the benefit

-defense was great, in particular in the first 20min.  the sun was directly in the keepers' eyes for Q1/Q3.  no matter, McLachlan stood on his head.  and i dont mean RU shot into his stick- he saved much off hip and low/away

-moving armitage to mid is starting to look like an experiment.  the offense mainly ran through him today.  too much dodging and not enough passing

-RU worked the shorts all day today, and the shorts did ok considering how much this team can score.  i think pearson has moved to dmid

-faceoffs werent great but clears were

-emotions can become an issue; lots of cursing and smashing sticks on the sideline, in full view of the refs.  lots.  could get flagged one day

-McLachlan was our star, but worth mentioning Lowd and Estrella.  DeSano is a nice surprise

lineups appear to be:

Att: pallo, behlen, huber

Mid: anderson, armitage, button, pearson, carlo, takacs, harris

FO: conlon/mitchell, lowd/genzale

Dmid: lowd/genzale, miele, pearson, morsch, reda, kral, harris

Def: desano, sabella, newton, mclachlan

Stony Brook men’s lacrosse falls to No. 9/10 Rutgers in season opener

“I am disappointed about the outcome against a really good team,” Gilardi said in a postgame interview with Stony Brook Athletics. “I thought we left a lot of plays on the field, especially on offense and with extra man opportunities. The guys battled hard … We need to watch the film, learn from it, clean up some things and get back to work on Monday.”

McLachlan’s efforts loom even larger when looking at the statistical differences between the two teams. The Seawolves were outshot 49-32 and were -9 in turnover differential, which gave Rutgers extra scoring opportunities. Stony Brook only won six of its 21 faceoffs.

After the loss, Stony Brook is no longer receiving votes in either of the two major national polls. The Seawolves will look to get back into national consideration on Saturday when they take on the Penn State Nittany Lions at noon. Penn State is 1-1 after losing to Villanova 14-12 on Sunday.

weird game hosting AFA.  went down 2-0, went up 6-2 in the first.  both teams settled in, and SB wins 15-8.

conlon had a huge day, sabella too, behlen, jamo was jamo.  EMO looks a lot better.  very few TOs.  clears near perfect.  odd officiating.  improved SOG%.  defense pretty good today.

AFA is pretty solid; they beat denver already.  their best player is out today.

Pallonetti guides Stony Brook men’s lacrosse to first win of 2023

Stony Brook found itself in an early 2-0 hole, forcing head coach Anthony Gilardi to take a timeout at the 6:26 mark of the first quarter. The Seawolves came out of that stoppage a completely different team, unleashing six-straight goals to take a 6-2 lead.

Gilardi called the timeout to allow his team to figure itself out. After that, Stony Brook calmed down and broke out.

“I usually don’t call timeouts that early in the first quarter, but I just felt like that was a big possession for us and wanted to make sure we got the most out of it,” Gilardi said in a postgame interview with The Statesman. “There was no unbelievable plan that we drew up or anything. It was just ‘Hey guys, take a deep breath. Let’s make sure we’re sharing the ball.’ Those guys did a good job of staying the course.”

“I thought we did a good job being physical on the ball,” Gilardi said. “The first two games, that’s what we didn’t do great. We were really physical on the ball and slid hard and played team defense.”

short turnaround, hosting SHU.  5-3 end of first.  SHU with lots of miscues.

takacs, kraemer and carlo run 2nd mid.  kral getting lots of runs on the faceoff wing.  kraemer is coming around fast.  pallo playing great in transition.  conlon 8/9 on draws.

defense had some sliding/rotation trouble early on.  otherwise we shot into the stick too often, forcing outside shots (SHU has 8 saves already), some terrible shot selection (nevertheless, 5G so far).

one good thing is we've had quick starts on offense in each game, so that's good.

halftime, 9-4 SB.

EMD continues to be great (killed a 6v4).  good defense in the 2nd Q.  mcdermott was moved to short.

smith got in some faceoffs.  big quarter for behlen.  lots of transition for SB so far.

end of 3rd, 12-8 SB.

at times, were back to shooting into the goalie's stick.

EMD is just great this year (conk, pearson, hillery).  btw there was a dead ball on an out of bounds near the sideline- coach brazel had a ball ready and threw it to our player to get a fast break started.  that's great heads-up, prepared coaching.

conk subbed in for desano.  big day so far for mcdermott at SSDM.  also mitchell tooks some draws.

i foresee good things for takacs in the future- you could tell in the preseason.

final- 15-12 SB

pallo continues to be masterful at huge GBs (not his primary job of course).

clearing (14/16), EMD (7/8!!), FOs (19/31), and SOG% (33/41) were strong today.

the bad was we kept letting SHU back in the game.

New additions lift Stony Brook men’s lacrosse to second win in three days
https://www.sbstatesman.com/2023/02/28/new-additions-lift-stony-brook-mens-lacrosse-to-second-win-in-three-days/

After that goal cut Stony Brook’s lead to one, Behlen continued his dominance from Friday’s game. The transfer from Long Island University put up a hat trick in the second quarter, scoring three consecutive goals in a two-and-a-half-minute span.

Behlen credited his success to the team’s play design on Sunday.

“Honestly, we had some really good plays drawn up,” Behlen said in a postgame interview with The Statesman. “Whenever I had the ball, I went hard to the cage and we just made something work.”
