Is 2022 The Year Stony Brook Finally Gets Back to The Top of The America East?

Stony Brook has recently won the regular-season conference titles in 2018 and 2019, however, they haven’t won a postseason game in nine years.

Offense was the highlight of this team in 2022, featuring the nation’s fourth-best scoring offense (14.36 goals per game) while also having the 18th-best team shooting percentage (.302%). The Seawolves also had the ninth-ranked man-up unit in DI, cashing in on .434% of their opportunities.

Former Michigan attackman Kevin Mack hopped into the transfer portal as a grad transfer this summer and decided to take his talents to Stony Brook, where he is expected to make a sizable impact on this Seawolves’ offense and fill some holes they do have. Mack had a rough senior season with the Wolverines, seeing action in just five games with one start due to injuries. However, the Manhasset, N.Y., native was a full-time starter during his first three years in Ann Arbor and tallied a career total of 95 points (53G/42A).

Wayne White, Mike Mccannell, and Matt Anderson may be one of the most productive midfield lines in the country.

Feb. 25 and 27 will feature an interesting four-team battle of Long Island teams. Hofstra, LIU, Stony Brook and St. John’s will all meet, with the Pride facing LIU on Friday and then the winners meeting the winners of Stony Brook-St. John’s on Sunday. The losers will play Sunday, as well.

In The Transfer Portal Era, Anthony Gilardi and Stony Brook Have it Figured Out

Stony Brook, led by head coach Anthony Gilardi, is very much in the camp of those who have embraced it. They are also among the programs who stand to gain the most in this new era of college lacrosse that we are just seeing to take fold.

Whether a player was highly recruited out of high school or blew up in college, Stony Brook and their aggressive approach to the portal gives many of those players a landing spot shall they want to come home and finish their college lacrosse career on their native Long Island.

Currently, Stony Brook has nine players on their 2022 men’s lacrosse roster that began their careers elsewhere. Only one, Antonie Campbell, is a JuCo transfer. The other eight joined the Seawolves after stops at other four-year colleges. Of those eight, six hail from Long Island.

This past summer, Stony Brook landed five transfers in Kevin Mack (Michigan) Ryan Pallonetti (Franklin & Marshall), Nick Squicciarini (LIU), Kyle Love (UMass Lowell), and Jacob Williams (Mount Olive). Mack, Pallonetti, brother of Dylan, and Squicciarini are all from Long Island. Williams is a Texas native and had an outstanding career as a DII player where he was a multi-time All-American, and looks to bring that same quality of play to Stony Brook.

WUSB Previews the MLAX Schedule here:

A very exciting schedule because of competition. Half of the Seawolves opponents finished with a top-30 RPI last season while SBU landed around the top-35. Dylan Pallonetti  (36 G, 19 AST) had a historic 2021 freshman campaign,  winning AE Rookie and Player of the Year honors for the first time in conference history. His role is expected to increase with several other top scorers (Haun, Pickel Jr) graduating over the off-season. Who will step up to take their place alongside the Ward Melville grad?

The team's biggest flaw recently has been being a one-and-done playoff team, regardless of how well of a regular season they had. Stony Brook is virtually a lock to make the playoffs every season.. Will coach Anthony Gilardi and his dynamic attacking offense finally get this team the title?

Stony Brook Seawolves

Last season: 8-6 (6-3), America East semifinalist

Key Departures: Cory Van Ginhoven (A), Chris Pickel Jr. (M), Tom Haun (M), Devin O’Leary (D)

Key Returners: Dylan Pallonetti (A), Mike McCannell (M), Michael Sabella (D), Anthony Palma (G), Austin Deskewicz (FO)

Transfer Additions:  Kevin Mack (A, Michigan) Ryan Pallonetti (M, Franklin & Marshall), Nick Squicciarini (G, LIU), Kyle Love (D, UMass Lowell), and Jacob Williams (D, Mount Olive).

The first full season under Anthony Gilardi ended just as every Stony Brook season, with the exception of the shortened 2020 campaign, has for the past nine years: an America East semifinals loss. 2022 marks a decade since the Seawolves last won the America East and earned the right to play in the NCAA Tournament. A decade after last being the kings of the conference, can Stony Brook put all the pieces together and take back to America East title as they once did?

Offense was the highlight of this team in 2021 as they the nation’s fourth-best scoring offense (14.36 goals per game) while also having the 18th-best team shooting percentage (.302%), and the ninth-ranked man-up unit in DI, cashing in on .434% of their opportunities. Not much should change there in 2022 with two of their top five point-getters returning in redshirt sophomore attackman Dylan Pallonetti, who was named the conference’s Offensive Player of The Year and Rookie of The Year, and fifth-year midfielder Mike McCannell. A mixture of Wayne White, Matt Anderson, Michigan grad transfer Kevin Mack, and others only add more talent and depth to this offense. I’m confident that unit will produce no matter what, but this Seawolves defense is a different story and the biggest hesitation I have about Stony Brook in 2022. After improving last season they don’t return a whole lot with poles Michael Sabella, Danny Cassidy, and goalie Anthony Palma being their only full-time starters back on that end.

16 Impact Men's Transfers to Watch in 2022

Kevin Mack, A (Michigan to Stony Brook)
Stony Brook coach Anthony Gilardi has had a ton of success with transfers early in his tenure, as well as during his time at Towson. Mack brings a new dimension to the Seawolves’ offense with his vision behind the cage. The No. 8 transfer class also recently got a new addition: Chris Merle, the d-middie from Virginia, joined the team as a mid-year transfer and will be playing lacrosse and football.
