SB Lacrosse 2021 Season
« on: September 01, 2020, 06:54:07 pm »
Assuming there even will be a 2021 season, the 2021 roster is up: https://stonybrookathletics.com/sports/mens-lacrosse/roster

some observations-

FR recruits (all showed): thompson, alfano, dolciotto, sommer, alnwick, daly, reda, sato, morschauser, conk, henry

new FR recruits: giovinco, maynard

transfers in: burns (so/UML), pallonetti (fr/UMd)

returning 5th years: bollinger, CVG, hebert, dugan, trenkle, matsuoka, pickel, white (RS SR), grippe

departing covid SRs: dowd, boehm, hannigan, shephard, reiter (RS SR)

other departed: gallagher, celauro, callan, walsh, stiso, leblanc, lucas, morris, culley

other:
-leblanc is now the student manager (first of it's kind)
-kaschalk had that nasty ACL last year; hope he's ok
-coach kelly isnt on the staff (was he a grad asst?), wasnt listed last year but there was a presser on it
-looks like harrell and stewart redshirted last year

in summary, getting our covid-seniors back- leaders like bollinger, haun, matsuoka, trenkle- is a huge victory, though it may have cost us some underclassmen.  looks like there's so much talent now should be tough to get on.

not in the USL early top 25 but ualBanY is: https://www.uslaxmagazine.com/college/men/early-2021-rankings-nos-25-21-division-i-men

25. ALBANY
2020 record: 2-3

Last seen: Scaring the daylights out of Maryland, scoring five of the last six goals in a 14-13 loss to the Terrapins in College Park.

Initial forecast: Let’s start with a bit of a curveball, OK? One of the more entertaining under-the-radar questions left unanswered in the 2020 season was whether the Great Danes would eventually win just enough faceoffs or stop just enough shots to get by and climb back to the top of the America East after a one-year hiatus. Albany had some of its classic mojo working (tied for fourth nationally in assists per game, 14th in shooting percentage), but it was also 65th in scoring defense and 68th in faceoff percentage. The big names on offense (Tehoka Nanticoke, Jakob Patterson, Corey Yunker, Graydon Hogg and Ron John) all appear set to return. College lacrosse is a little more fun when the Dane Train is rolling, and it may very well be in an America East that has some other interesting teams to take note of (Stony Brook and UMBC among them).

How Much Ground Can Stony Brook Gain in The Second Year of The Gilardi Era?
https://lacrossebucket.com/2020/11/06/how-much-ground-can-stony-brook-gain-in-the-second-year-of-the-gilardi-era/

The Seawolves have won the America East regular-season championship in very recent history, doing so in 2018 and 2019. However, they experienced upset losses to Vermont and UMBC in the conference semifinals in those years. In fact, they have lost in the America East semifinals every year since their last NCAA Tournament trip in 2012.

And in just the first year, albeit a partial season, Gilardi and his staff put in the foundation for this program to eventually fully blossom as we have seen them in the past.

Junior Renz Conlon, who transferred in from DII Franklin Pierce last season, went 87-for-162 (53%) at the faceoff dot last season and ranked fourth in the America East in faceoff win percentage. Conlon should only improve as a junior in his second season at the DI level.

With the solid mix of veteran experience and youth that they have on both ends, the Seawolves could very well challenge for the America East title and get past that semifinal roadblock that has held them back for the past seven full seasons. And whether they can get there or not will likely be proven on the defensive end, where they most need to improve.

podcast with gilardi: https://stonybrookathletics.podbean.com/e/the-howl-s2-e13-mens-lacrosse-coach-anthony-gilardi/

-RS SO palonnetti works hard and fits in, sounds like 4 man rotation on attack with kaschalk, CVG, and haun
-FR giovinco has impressed early after going to AFA prep, versatile, off ball, weak hand, dodging, under GLE
-12 recruits so far, possibly more coming (we have 14 listed here)
-7 are from LI, looking for tough kids that fit into the culture and love the sport
-channy is leading the offense to free up gilardi
-alums making a great showing in pro lacrosse
-goal is to become a top ten program and win the AE
-canucks are critical to success
-mccannell scored 5 in the intrasquad game
-best week of practice was march when season was cancelled; picking up where left off
-starts 3/20 at UML, also playing locals (hofstra, SJU, fairfield)
-lost brown (ivy cancelled) but on schedule moving forward

10 Players Primed For Breakout Seasons in 2021
Wayne White, M, Stony Brook
https://lacrossebucket.com/2020/11/30/10-players-primed-for-breakout-seasons-in-2021/

Quote
White is a known commodity amongst America East circles. Starting a few games per year during his first two seasons, he was, essentially, one of the Seawolves’ top reserve midfielders as a freshman and sophomore. Looking to be a full-time starter for the first time in his career in 2019, White fractured his right foot in practice following their season opener and missed the remainder of the year. He came back pretty strong last season, tallying seven goals and six assists in seven games. He started all seven contests. We should see it all come together for White this season, as the redshirt freshman will be one of the Seawolves’ top offensive threats and, for the first time in his career, be a full-time starter for a full season.

A Look At Each Second Year Head Coach Heading Into 2021
https://lacrossebucket.com/2020/12/08/a-look-at-each-second-year-head-coach-heading-into-2021/

Quote
Anthony Gilardi – Stony Brook | 2020 Record: 5-2

Outlook: After a stint as the offensive coordinator at Towson, Gilardi shipped up to Long Island where he accepted the task of leading the Stony Brook Seawolves, which is one of the best programs in the America East. The main thing that everyone will be watching is whether or not Gilardi can get Stony Brook back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2012. Judging by last season, that is very much achievable. Stony Brook went 5-2 last season. They earned wins over the likes of Brown and Rutgers and their only losses came against Fairfield and Bryant. Coming into the 2021 season, the Seawolves are expected to be one of the top two teams in the conference, along with UAlbany. With eight fifth-year returnees, in addition to the number of talented underclassmen on both ends, many feel optimistic about this squad coming into 2021. And America East title game appearance is and should be, the expectation for Stony Brook in year two of the Gilardi era.

In addition, an America East men’s and women’s coach were exploring full schedules including non-conference games, which would likely be played before the conference season started in March. One potential move, at least in women’s, was to create an open week in April for a non-conference opponent.
