18. Stony Brook

Stony Brook was a game away from making the playoffs in 2014, but unfortunately for the Seawolves, that game came against Albany. The biggest loss for Stony Brook is Mike Rooney graduating, but the good news for the Seawolves is that Brody Eastwood returns this season, having placed 3rd in the nation in goals last season.

With Albany a question mark in the post-Thompson era, maybe Stony Brook can wrestle control away and take the America East crown this season. The offense is there for Stony Brook, but can the defense handle playing Albany twice a year? We’ll see.

Player to watch: Brody Eastwood, Attack

Brody Eastwood, Stony Brook

Stony Brook had a great season, and a fantastic scoring offense last year. The only problem was that they share a conference with Albany, who had an even better season and a flashier scoring offense. Returning for the Seawolves for his senior year is Brody Eastwood, who posted 61 goals last year.

Eastwood has posted 40+ goals in all three of his seasons at Stony Brook, and it’s hard to imagine that he doesn’t keep that streak going in his senior season. The question for Eastwood is whether or not he can become the leader of this offense. Mike Rooney posted 112 points for the Seawolves last season, and 62 of those points were assists. Eastwood only had six assists last season. For Eastwood to take a step up from scorer to star, he’ll need to prove he can feed the rock as well as he can rip it.

Zach Oliveri

Old School: UMass
New School: Stony Brook

Skinny: The former U.S. U19 goalie had a year of eligibility left and decided to use it closer to home at Stony Brook. With a career .532 save percentage, Oliveri will be an upgrade over incumbent starter Hayden Johnstone (.455).

People are forgetting (or didn't know) that Johnstone had surgery mid-season and came back about 2 weeks earlier than he should have.

I think Zach and Hayden will complement each other well, and push each other.  Would actually be a great 'tandem' goalie scenario - they both bring different things to the position, for sure.

Overall, this is 'the year' for this team.....can't wait!!!
Any fall ball?

Good point, I think Johnstone is better that people give him credit for.

30 in 30: Who's Due for a Breakthrough in 2016?

Stony Brook

The America East has been Albany's playground in recent seasons, but it's easy to forget that Stony Brook was right with the Great Danes last year, playing a barn-burner of a regular-season game (Albany won 17-15) and then making it to the league's championship game before Albany ended its season with a 22-9 rout. With Lyle Thompson gone, it's hard not to envision Scott Marr's team coming back to the pack in the AE. Will the Seawolves, led by honorable mention All-American Challen Rodgers (30G, 23A), take over?
