big news in the lax world... JHU coach Dave Pietramala leaves the program.  he won two titles as a coach, one as a player, countless F4s.  largely considered the best player ever in the game- and definitely for a defensemen- reinvented the position.

interview with him reveals that when he played HS, he says how great john espey was.  3:45min in: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/overtime-with-paul-carcaterra/id1450279707

The Best Season From Every America East Program
https://lacrossebucket.com/2020/05/15/the-best-season-from-every-america-east-program/

Quote
Stony Brook (2010)
The Stony Brook Seawolves have been one of the most successful programs in the America East and there are a plethora of seasons that could be argued as the Seawolves’ best ever. However, their 2010 season, which was the second to last in the Rick Sowell era, is by far their best.

Stony Brook went 13-4, 5-0 in the America East, won the conference championship, and made their second trip to the NCAA Tournament. Stony Brook earned the eight seed in the NCAA Tournament, where they beat Denver, 9-7, in the first round before falling to Virginia, 10-9, in the quarterfinals.

That Seawolves team featured a slew of All-Conference and players, including Kevin Crowley and Steve Waladeck, who are probably the most notable from that 2010 squad.

The Pipeline: On Canada Day, Stony Brook Men's Lax Celebrates Contribution from North of Border
https://stonybrookathletics.com/news/2020/7/1/mens-lacrosse-the-pipeline-on-canada-day-stony-brook-mens-lax-celebrates-contribution-from-north-of-border.aspx

Quote
STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Kevin Crowley became aware of Stony Brook men's lacrosse more than a decade ago, as the result of fellow British Columbia natives Cory Conway and Rhys Duch playing with the program.

Crowley ultimately became a Stony Brook recruiting target and signee, too.

And the Canadian pipeline to the Seawolves that the trio helped establish continues to this day.

Seven members of the 2020 Stony Brook men's lacrosse team hailed from Canada: Matt Anderson, Noah Armitage, Kyle Hebert, Patrick Kaschalk, Harrison Matsuoka, Mike McCannell and Caleb Pearson.

Stony Brook's Canadian tally ranked fourth among the 74 NCAA Division I men's lacrosse programs this past season. Only Robert Morris (12), St. Bonaventure (nine) and Vermont (eight) had more Canadians on their 2020 rosters.

The Seawolves have an eighth Canadian joining the program for the 2020-21 academic year, too: Zach Thompson from Ontario.

"It's been great to see the Canadian pipeline that has developed over the years at Stony Brook," said Crowley, the only player ever to be drafted first overall by National Lacrosse League and Major League Lacrosse organizations. "I think Canadians bring a high skill level and grit to any team. I'm looking forward to seeing more Canadians play at 'The Brook.'"

At Stony Brook, Crowley earned the 2010 USILA Enners Award, given to nation's most outstanding Division I player.

Recruit Jordan McBride had told the Stony Brook coaching staff that Crowley also was interested in attending college in the United States. And both New Westminster, B.C., natives eventually signed with the Seawolves for the 2008 season.

Crowley and McBride now rank second and third, respectively, in program history in career goals. They each earned an America East Player of the Year honor — Crowley as a junior and McBride as a senior.

Behind them on the program's career goals list are two other British Columbia natives: two-time USILA All-American Challen Rogers (fourth) and Brody Eastwood (sixth).

How important was the Canadian contribution to the 2020 Seawolves, who went 5-2 during the abbreviated season?

Pearson's 15 goals tied for the team lead. He had three sudden-death winners — against St. John's, Brown and Sacred Heart.

Anderson and Pearson started all seven games, while McCannell and Matsuoka also appeared in every game. Kaschalk started four games before suffering a season-ending injury at Rutgers. Armitage, a freshman, worked his way into the starting lineup just before the season abruptly ended. Hebert backed up Michael Bollinger in goal.

Armitage had emerged as a finalist for Team Canada for the World Lacrosse Men's U19 World Championship that was to be held in Ireland this month. The final-round tryout as well as the tournament were canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"There's nothing like the feeling of having a Canadian brother on your team, because most — if not all of us — play box lacrosse at home," McCannell said, referring to the game's indoor version. "We all understand the competitiveness and the desire to win. The same competitiveness transfers to college lacrosse. We want to make each other better.

"There definitely is a competitiveness against our America teammates, because we always want to be the best."

The bottom line: Stony Brook men's lacrosse has a rich tradition of getting Canadian contributions throughout its history, a fact worth celebrating on Canada Day.

"Like, Long Island, Canada has amazing lacrosse talent," Stony Brook coach Anthony Gilardi said. "We are very fortunate to have had some tremendously talented Canadian student-athletes on and off the field in our program.  We look forward to continuing to build our pipeline north of the border."

Rand plans to keep Shoreline Lacrosse around forever, starting now
https://www.theday.com/article/20200703/SPORT04/200709819

Adam Rand doesn't tend to understate what Shoreline Lacrosse, a club program he founded in 2009, means to him or what his long-term goal is.

"We're going to keep this program around forever," Rand said. "I've had people say, 'We'd love to buy your program.' Not over my dead body. The program means the world to me. I believe I've got the best coaching staff. We've grown every single year. We're here for the long term.

Rand's love of lacrosse began in East Lyme and continued during his career at Division I Stony Brook University, where he became one of the nation's top face-off specialists of all-time. He graduated with 796 face-offs won, third most in NCAA Division I history, and was second all-time in face-offs attempted. He earned United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association honorable mention All-America honors as a senior.

"I played lacrosse here, I was lucky enough to play in college and when I came back I thought, 'How can we take an area of Connecticut that's not known for lacrosse and ultimately get southeastern Connecticut to become a hotbed?'" Rand recounted in a telephone interview this week.

Rand began Shoreline Lacrosse as a series of camps when he was just a sophomore in college. After he arrived at Stony Brook on lacrosse-crazed Long Island, he was around several alumni of the program who were involved in club lacrosse, recruiting the current players to run a series of evaluations on the club level.

"I thought, 'I need to take this. We need this in southeastern Connecticut,'" Rand said. "That's why we started the camps."

Joe Spalina son, Junior in High School committed to the Orange yesterday. It is too bad he didn't commit to SB. What a huge boost that would have been for this program. But to be honest. He will have a hell of a time up in Syracuse as opposed to staying here at Stony Brook.
