Stony Brook to CAA?
« on: May 19, 2012, 09:04:14 pm »
AP feature on CAA expansion has Yeager quoted that CAA Football MUST add at least one member to preserve an 8 game conference schedule (as has pretty much already been set in stone for the 2013 season). http://sports.yahoo.com/news/defections-caa-looking-add-members-213844975--spt.html;_ylt=Ah6dY6Iyq2DxPiwXB0SBpoDevbYF

Fiore mentioned a "transformative change", and Inside Man asserted that this change wasn't the transfer from Maryland. With Liberty and Coastal looking to go (although realistically without an NCAA waiver they'll never get to FBS - no conference would want that headache from donors and fans), gotta think that SBU is chomping at the bit to align with better competition.

Are we in CAA football in 2013?

So what does that mean. Does this mean we are staying in BSC and AEC for the next couple of years?!?

Or does it mean that as soon as the CAA call us we'll leave?

Kind of plain vanilla response.   Just have to wait and see  over the summer.  I suspect exit fees would be imposed by the AE and BSC  if we left, plus we would leave both conference's in bind especially the  Big South in football.  Who knows ?  Maybe we will wait and move to the FBS  sooner rather than later.

Bosydid, an Albany fan on the AE basketball forum, is saying Stony Brook to the CAA is a done deal. Some of the Albany posters are well connected so there might be something to it.

That response was far more than vanilla. It was loaded, and nearly identical to the ones posted by programs like Virginia Commonwealth before they hopped conferences.

Example: http://articles.dailypress.com/2012-03-26/sports/dp-spt-caa-membership-20120326_1_vcu-and-mason-mason-athletic-director-caa-commissioner-tom-yeager

My guess is negotiations are nearly complete - and someone who shouldn't have has gotten wind that SBU is out. My guess is also that this knowledge came before a particular deadline (perhaps 6/1) that would perhaps have made such an exit more expensive, or ruined a timeline that was set by the new conference. Much of it may directly have to do with the completion date of the arena, and the rumored expansion of LaValle that posters have tossed around.

Regardless - no question in my mind with that statement that SBU is not long for the America East/Big South...and everyone knows it.

Are there any other conferences that could be considering Stony Brook? It almost seems as if Fiore is sending a message/bluffing that the CAA might be not be the only conference considering Stony Brook. I know I always harp on FBS football and I don't think Stony Brook is ideally ready, but his comments on Stony Brook being the only top 50 public university not playing FBS football is peculiar.

I really have no idea what the goal of that statement was. I would believe it if Fiore just wanted journalists to stop asking him about it. I could definitely also see it as a coded of message to other university and conference officials.

One thing I've taken away from this weekend is that Stanley seems to be onboard with increasing Stony Brook's athletic profile which is a great thing.

So if not the CAA ? We can eliminate the Ivy, PL and the MAAC-are we going to take a shot at the MAC  ?  That  would mean stadium expansion like now  to get  to 15k plus.  I susepct it is  the CAA  which  would be fine and fit into our long term goal of FBS  down the road.  Of a stretch could be C-USA .  Interesting tmes in Wolfie Land -LOL

Of course Stanley is supportive of athletics. I don't think much of what's going on would be possible without his support.

We all know what we want Stony Brook to be. You have the fans and the administration with the same goals for Stony Brook and we are getting there little by little.

I cannot see how we could compete in the FBS with an 8k stadium and 5k attendance, impossible. The only way we can jump to the FBS and "skip" the CAA is with an expansion of LaValle to 15-18k in the next three years, enough to get us into the MAC...

They have been talking about a stadium expansion for years now. According Dane96 progress is being made on that front. I honestly think the message yesterday may have been "We want to go FBS with the other state research universities in the AAU, but we're happy in the AE and Big South until that opportunity comes up. We aren't interested in the CAA."

If I'm not mistaken the MAC hasn't replaced Temple yet, so they have an opening. I've been told that Stony Brook would have the support Buffalo when/if they were ready for a move to the MAC. Stony Brook is now a national class FCS program. Rumors are that stadium expansion is gaining steam. I don't think it's a sure thing, but it definitely seems possible.
