Is Wolfie that scary?
« on: March 06, 2012, 11:59:20 pm »
We've all heard the rumors about Liberty getting ready to leave the Big South...

http://www.flamefans.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=18812

But now there is talk about Coastal getting ready to bounce...

http://www.myhorrynews.com/v2/content.aspx?ID=44530&MemberID=2156&GUID=7a152f96-c62f-44ec-9f26-542264e7a04a

I know it's only rumors right now, but this can't be a good sign.  On the opposite end, the only team I've heard that is looking to join the Big South is Kennesaw State (Georgia), which means we'd lose the auto-bid.  That might be enough of a push for us to start thinking about getting into a more "local" conference.

I'm sure Fiore has to be thinking of making a move for the future of SBU football. I wonder where we are headed!

I hate to admit it, but the Big South always was a temporary conference affiliation.  And thats coming from me, an outsider, not the Athletic Dept.

Here's to moving on to bigger and better things.  I like winning, but we were what 15-6 in conference play??? (guess off top of my head)

Very close chairman! More like 19-4 :)

We should stay in the Big South a couple of more years to get that auto-bid and then bounce to a better conference. Hopefully Liberty and CCU don't leave yet.

It is going to take several years if it all before Liberty or Coastal leave.  So I think we will have some  competition for awhile.  I do see us leaving one of these days hopefully to the CAA in all sports.

I'm expecting only about 2 more years of the Big South.  I figure Liberty is going to start their transition much sooner rather than later, and Coastal is having a bunch of internal issues.

If Liberty and Coastal leave the Big South and we don't have an offer to CAA, we might as well go independent.

If the Big South Football Conference  breaks up and we dont get an invite from the CAA we should think about jumping to the MAC with Buffalo. Being an independent is a nightmare of scheduling plus  the players dont see any all conference awards. Only Notre  Dame  survives as major independent.

I don't see us going independent, for all the reasons said above.

There are plenty of potential conferences, depending on how much we're willing to do.  If we are willing to move everything, then a lot of options open up.  Our "periphery sports" are strong, which gives us a selling point.  The increased exposure of our institution doesn't hurt either.  If we look to move football only, then options are different.

If nothing else, we should be keeping our eyes open, because things look to be changing.  And it appears to be sooner rather than later.

I'm just saying I'd rather see us as an independent than in the Big South minus Coastal and Liberty. I can't imagine justifying the travel costs of Big South play when the conference wouldn't even have an autobid to NCAA's.

There have been talks of Stony Brook to the CAA, so we might be even further along than either Coastal or Liberty.

CBS college sports is reporting Georgia State is joining the Sunbelt and leaving the CAA. Stony Brook definitely figures to be on the short list to replace them.

I saw that also  and hope we are on the top of the CAA's  A list for 2013  as a full sports member.
