I had concerns last year of us graduating so many guys and falling off a cliff, but we've put in the new guys nicely, and when we've had guys out for injury, the backups have stepped right in with pretty much no noticeable drop-off. That kind of depth is very, very good and was something we needed to see Coach P handle this off-season before extending him IMO. However on to my next point...

We should probably be more worried of losing coach P than firing him at this point.

 ;D ;D

This is interesting, as usually when a coach is a superstar at a lower level, he's quickly poached by a higher level program. You see this all the time. P5 programs take G5 coaches, G5 programs take FCS coaches, etc. With that in mind, I give JMU's coach one, maybe two more seasons before he leaves for an ACC job, he's got that program rolling and P5 athletic departments are taking notice...

What coach P has managed to do as SBU is do well enough to stick around, but not great enough to get poached by an FBS school. It's quite funny when you really think about it. That said, Rutgers will be needing a new football coach soon.... lol

speaking of RuTgers... https://pilotonline.com/sports/college/elsewhere/article_38535852-c781-5a3f-a77a-364c32cccdb7.html

looking at how your coach is doing is only HALF the analysis.  who is available, how much $$$ do we have, what do the contracts say, etc. is just as important.

more and more in college athletics (or even pro now) you trade in one coach for the next, which is just a promise, only to find that you are static, or worse, worse.

Come on, it's really rare for FCS coaches to get head jobs at the g5 schools. Those jobs almost always go to assistants from the p5 or the NFL. The only recent FCS coach I remember getting called up was Craig Bohl. And that was only after his third straight national championship at North Dakota State, and that offer was from the Mountain West powerhouse that is Wyoming (sarcasm). Its not exactly fair to criticize Priore because he hasn't gotten an FBS offer. If we had stayed in the Big South, I bet he would have had job offers from CAA schools a la Danny Rocco. The profile, and pay, of the Stony Brook job has risen with Coach Ps success here.

FCS HC that leave for the FBS usually go to lower end programs as a HC or a bigger program as a Offense or Defense Coordinator. Coach P is in his late 50's so I'm not sure that he would want to do that he likes having total control with a free rein so the only reason I see him leaving is for a huge payday or to retire (I can see coaching for10 more years) which I don't see happening.

I agree, and i also believe coach P will finish out his coaching years at SB. I just don't see SB letting coach P go because he isn't winning the conference year after year. It's hard to fire someone if he keeps the team in the middle of the conference. I think that's where SB will ultimately finish this year and quite possibly years to come.

AS long as JMU stays in the FCS they will always be at the top of the conference or very close to it every year and ELON is turning into an FCS powerhouse with their recruiting. Ad in Delaware as the next team to be reloading, that puts us at around 3rd place in the conference. Enough to get you an invite into the playoffs every year, essentially sealing the deal for a new, coach P contract in the offseason.  This is how I see it playing out...

in the future- i actually see richmond as a threat- more than towson, del, w&m.  elon's recent results show promise but i just dont know enough about that program to guess.

This entire conference will be competitive year in and year out with some teams being up or down at any given time. My expectation is to be in playoff contention every year by winning 7 games. Assuming an FBS loss, and two Patriot/NEC/D2 wins every year, that would mean finishing with a 5-3 record in the CAA most years. Very reasonable expectations. Every once in a while you'll have a total rebuild and finish with 5 wins or less, and then there will be others where we win 10+ games. What I won't tolerate is 5-6 year after year, after year. I think those days are behind us though. Coach P has impressed me this year as I didn't expect to be as good as we have been. Eventually though, you've got to start winning the big games. That's the next step.

I'd love to not get screwed over by the playoff committee, and really push the program forward with a quarterfinals appearance. That would be great. The committee really screwed us over last year a we should have gotten a seed and first round bye. Go SB!!
