First Commitment for SBU Football 2016 Class
« on: June 16, 2015, 04:25:30 am »
On June 10 SBU had it's first Football Camp and over 150 HS Players showed up one of the players was Anthony Catapano a 6'2 280 OL from Carey HS who happens to be from the same HS that gave SBU Mike Lisi and he gave a verbal commitment.

Any chance he's related to Ray Catapano who won the thorpe award at Carey a couple years back?

I know some of you get frustrated with the SBU Program however they are going in the right direction as they currently have between freshmen and redshirt freshmen over 40 players plus a good sized sophomore class with the 2 commitments they have already there are at least 5 others I know of that should come on board by the end of December and they are pushing hard on many others. Also I expect at least another 12 Long Island players will be part of the 2016 class

Coach Priore is the right Coach for this program at this time and he may tweak his coaching staff but don't expect household changes. Joey Carbone is only a redshirt freshman however the staff believes he will develop into a solid QB. Ben Holmes is from upstate NY and I spoke to a reporter that covered him in HS and he expects him to be a big time FCS QB. Also expect SBU to bring in another QB recruit for next year.

SBU by the way is ranked 39th in the FCS the last time I looked

With all do respect Campi I strongly disagree with your assessment. I don't think coach P is the right coach for this program anymore. He did a great job moving us from Div3 to Div1 but now he stalled. I have no disrespect for the coach I just feel he has reached his max ability to take this program to the next level. What I mean by "next level" I mean deep into the playoffs and beyond. SB Football is not the only team with Freshman starting, many other teams are in the same position. It comes down to recruiting high talent Athletes out of high school and NOT kids who are a work in progress with high intentions they will improve down the road. Top Athletes want to play for a team with a respected head coach who they can look up to and not feel uncomfortable with and who has a track record of taking his team to multiple playoffs year after year..   I have been following SB football for many years and his style of football has not changed even though we moved a couple of times up in conference. It is my understanding and observation, Coach P has a history of taking total control of the offense and not allowing his coaches to make adjustment when needed. This is not acceptable, he needs to adjust and change on the dime when opposing teams figure out our game plan. Many fans i talk to feel the same way. I can go on and on but why bother. As of now I have faith with our new AD and think he will do the right thing with taking us to the next level. So far, he is living up to his expectations!

Unfortunately, I don't think Priore is the man to take us to the next level.  He did a very good job getting us to where we are.  But it is becoming painfully obvious that he is not cut out for this level of competition.

If he is a quality recruiter, then he has players who are talented enough to play at this level.  If you have CAA-level players, but can't win in the CAA, then you need a better coach.  If he's a quality coach who is capable of coaching at this level, then he should be winning games.  If he can't win games because the players he has aren't CAA-caliber, then that is on him as a recruiter, and also his fault. Since leaving the Big South, we've gone 5-6, 5-7, and are well on our way to 2-9, so something is wrong.  In my opinion, he's failing at both aspects right now.

As a recruiter, he's relying WAY too heavily on transfers.  This creates a lack of leadership on the team.  Our two captains, prior to this season, played a total of 28 games for SBU in their career.  How can you expect them to lead a team when they've barely been on the team themselves?  Plus, good luck developing chemistry.  If you can recruit kids (or if you transfer them in, you do it early, not one-year rentals), actually play them.  The kids he has brought in, since they never see the field (always getting replaced by transfers), look awful as they haven't played a snap since high-school. That's a recipe for failure (see our current situation at WR, RB, TE).

As a coach, he's been failing horribly.  Can't seem to adjust to teams that can stop the run, doesn't have a "plan B", can't seem to run a 2-minute offense or find a big-play threat, tons of penalties, poor special teams, etc.  And these problems have been getting worse over the past three years.

I'd love to be wrong, but we just got hammered by Elon (who has only won 8 games in the past four years...), and it doesn't look like we're going to win again this season.

Are the current players being utalized in the right position; you have a good TE playing OT You have several WR that cannot get separation &  average speed  & drop way to many balls.....Connor has the better arm in the pocket; install TE for blocking & use them in the short game more.

What the hell happen to using the FB in the back field

I am very concerned about the technique on the D side pass coverage (very poor) Elon only scored 1 touchdown all season throwing the ball & they scored 2 today on SBU.

Why is a redshirt freshman your starting QB; if you watch the game he is not ready...give Connor the ball & let the kid finish the season out.

I do agreee about the style of coaching & it has to change; if he can adapt to the CAA great. At this time there is nothing that show me they can do this; the coach is set in his ways & it is very clear in the play calling. I do not like the blocking sceam on the OL....when SBU pulls the OT to 2 hole we counter run to his side & we are stuffed on the line or lose 2 yards every time (but we keep running it)....WHY

Please do not put everything on your running game; when you only have a 3rd string back.... You need to make adjustments in your game plan & that did not happen. At this point the running game is not going to win you games this year; to many injuries in the back field. Install FB for blocking or power running Chris is a very strong kid.

Some one please tell me why are the WR running 3rd down routes 3 yards short of the 1st down; this happen again today several times. I hope this is not the 1st read for the QB.

When we went to a double TE set & move the ball 80 yards & put 7 on the board; why go away from something that works. I put a lot on poor play calling & not putting players in the right position to win....Coaching... Coaching..

i do agree we need to  review the current talent being brought into the program.....SBU will not have a winning program if you think all the talent is  going to come from the Island area...

When SBU recruited heavy in the Mid Atlantic, Texas, Florida, California & PA regions SBU started a winning tradition.....these areas are hot beds for talent....the staff needs to do a better job in reviewing talent.....

When you have one of the senior D captain on the team walk away from the program due to lack of confidence in the program that says it all.....

I am deeply concerned; if your not then you need to open up your eyes & clear your vision.

Today was my breaking point' & you could see it also in the players today when the walk off the field...

I give #62 the man up award; this kid has played w pain every game this year........they play the game for the love of it; please support them through this tough time.....

I am sorry if i sound real negative; but the game plan you see on the field is not working & I have seen no adjustments to date this year & these issues were present last year.

I scratch my head & say is it the players or the game plan that the coaches have installed with the talent we have on the field....... I do not like kicking some one when they are down; but these dogs need to learn new tricks.

I also want to note that there is a lot of injuries on both sides of the ball; but you need better depth at the WR, OL, DB. It's verry clear we need to get bigger stronger & w speed on both sided of the ball.

QB is a whole nother issue; look at tape & you will see that Carbone has major issues to improve on...

Footwork
Stair down primary reciever
Doesn't step into his throws
Cant throw to the left side of the field very well; not turning his hip
Throws into double or triple coverage....

Good thing he is young; but needs a lot of work this off season.....Got to have a back up plan & the problem is who.

I don't blame anyone for calling for Coach Priore's head as we continue to flounder in 2015 however someone brought it up earlier that trying to be competitive with long Island Football Players just won't work at this level especially in the CAA. When the season began SBU was picked to finish 9th so there shouldn't be any surprise where we are at this time. The concern is are the younger players developing for next year's team or will we continue to flounder. I believe between Freshman, Redshirt Freshman and Sophomores make up about 65 to 70 players on the current roster. I believe that win or lose joey Carbone is your QB for the rest of the season.
According to my sources there are 4 commitments for 2016; Anthony Catapano OL Carey HS, Ben Holmes QB Nassau Community College, Tariq Gordon 6'5 230 DE Nazareth HS (Brooklyn) and Infinite Tucker 6'4 200 WR/RB/Safety Huntington HS (Track Star).
I believe that at the end of the season the AD and Coach will sit down and determine if the program is on the right path if it's not assistants my be changed however isn't Coach P signed through 2018

I actually forgot about Priore contract extension from Donna Woodruff. She sneaked that in. Oh Lord, help us..We are stuck with this coaching staff for 2 more years. 2 more seasons of dismal coaching and losing records, there will be more visiting fans sitting in the bleachers instead of SB fans..

ha ha, this was in that same story, and we all know how well that worked out.

A formal announcement of the extension is scheduled Thursday along with the announcement that Syracuse quarterback John Kinder is transferring to Stony Brook for his final season of eligibility in 2014. Kinder is a native of Inwood who led Lawrence High to the Long Island Class III title in 2009 when he also was named New York State Class A player of the year. Kinder accounted for more than 5,000 yards total offense and 110 touchdowns in his high school career.

"As a high school player, John was a tremendous quarterback, a local we would have loved to get on the front end," Priore said. "Syracuse was a great opportunity, but he was stuck behind ."

The 6-2, 187-pound Kinder will join the Seawolves in summer workouts to compete for the starting job. "He's a superior athlete at the position that doesn't come around very often at this level [FCS] of football," Priore said. "He has a strong, athletic body and can throw the long ball. With his running ability, he can be a dual-purpose quarterback."

As much as I enjoy  some of SBU's  sports  their spin machine can make anything look rosey.   Whether its our  recruits, shortcomings on the field or injuries everything  gets the fluffed over.
