true.

and back on to local competition- the fact is, in the eyes of the regional fan, we are probably no different than wagner, SHU, marist, fairfield, columbia, fordham, iona.

Sadly, true. (Although Iona and Fairfield no longer have football)

Looking at the Coastal Carolina model, their stadium was 9,000 in 2016. They expanded it to 15,000 in 2017, and then to 21,000 in 2019. Total cost, $38 million.

Their attendance was also not great throughout much of the 2010s, but 2015 was a good year when they reached No. 1 in the polls. Still, the numbers jumped as soon as they reached FBS.

Sadly, most New Yorkers are ignorant and probably assume all FCS schools are the same without realizing that Stony Brook in the CAA, the most prestigious conference. I thought getting our games on SNY last year was a good first step - no other FCS school has a partnership with one of the most iconic NY sports channels the way we do. But, that alone won't elevate us, especially when people can just skip right past it on the TV and watch something else.

When you say "prestigious" what do you mean? Academically speaking?? Certainly not  #1 in football. The "Missouri Valley Mountain Conference" is and has been the top football conference in the FCS for quite some time now.

i havent done the research but getting anyone to faithfully watch SB football, even on tv, is not going to happen in NJ, CT, and perhaps even north of the bronx.

that leaves the city.  where people just really aren't interested in football.  perhaps if they are SB grads, they will follow the program.  but few are going to cross a river or bridge to get there.

now we are down to suffolk and nassau.  good news- that's like 3m people.

if you want to fill 15k seats, that's 1/200 people on LI.

High school football fills more seats at LaValle than Stony Brook games do, and that's without them inflating numbers. It's actually very impressive.

sigh, yes. (not when i played though!)

to my knowledge, LI football was normally saturday afternoons, but that is somewhat changing (want to hear thoughts on this).  so i wonder how SB football has reacted to that, if at all.

of course, the second half of the season, weather is an issue for night games.  recall we didnt have proper lights until 2002.

newcomers to the old big east made their bones 15 years ago by playing on wed/thurs nights for the CFB-starved crowd.  louisville, cincy, South Florida, uconn.  probably even argue boise, ECU, TCU, ruTgers, fresno

Quick side note

As if we don't hate JMU enough already, with their fancy Brideforth Stadium, and being able to pack the house every Saturday, the school's brand new Basketball arena is opening this month.

that campus has gone right past us in so many ways and i have no doubt in my mind they have designs for FBS.  they'll be a national name if they arent already.  i think they are.

they have a vibrant campus, a good academic reputation, and a student body that supports athletics.  its reflected in the product.  avg 18k per game.  of course, it's priced like a private school but if virginia pulls it off, why can't we (ohh i know why no need to write it): https://www.nbc29.com/resizer/s0DWoZlyUuz8DBOTvle8FJJPcpI=/1200x0/cloudfront-us-east-1.images.arcpublishing.com/raycom/AL5AMJZCXBBPNOZQ7DRYAGGAYI.PNG

if we arent careful, ualbANy will pass us by as well.  i think they already have.

100% JMU students support athletics so much more than SBU does. And I'm jealous of it. Duke nation on twitter is bat **** nuts, it's great. And their student run paper is incredible. I worked for the Statesman and dealt with the Breeze when they came to town for a game, it was easy to see why students get great paying jobs right out of school. But damn do I hate the Dukes.

i think JMU is actually very easy to like- as opposed to our friends up the hudson.  ::) 8)

ive only been once, about 10 years ago, but right then and there you could tell the dukes have a big future.  they'll likely ditch us soon as they've already outgrown the CAA, i think.

bball arena looks great.  better weather, nicer campus, more to do, longer history.  just have change the university's name at some point...

The Stony Brook student body is **** pathetic. The school somehow keeps accepting these pasty-skinned losers who know more about League of Legends and anime than they do a shotgun formation. These kids provide nothing of value! Please stop admitting these people that add nothing to the campus.

Stony Brook also needs to add more out of state and upstate students. Commuters are also a cancer. Stony Brook isn’t a “commuter school”, but it still has far too many commuters for me to be comfortable with.

Change has to start at the administration. The new president comes from Big 12 Texas? Well start implementing a Big 12 mentality already!!!
