It’s our SNY debut! Not to mention the first game where alcohol is being sold at LaValle.
I know we almost got 10,000 people last time, but I’d be shocked if we came even close this week. The students are pissed off and boycotting football because they moved the Homecoming tailgate away from the big lot to host a BBQ there instead.
I can see this affecting the entire season’s attendance numbers because the kids are unbelievably angry. They want to watch attendance numbers crash and burn and so many of them are flat out refusing to ever attend a football game again. Victor Ochi tweeted about it too and got plenty of support.
I'm late to this. But finally. Something is happening... even if its just chaos.
Something has to change and I'm glad the students are finally doing something. Victor Ochi is right, the CC and Liberty days where the best days for students to have fun outside and also enjoy a game. The the University slowly started marginalizing them shutting out frat tailgates, charging $$$ to park at the main lot, followed by not letting anyone out at halftime, etc, etc.
I was a student back then (2007-2012) and we actually were able to build a consistent group of student supporters who came out every game (a lot of credit goes to our student
defacto leader back then - Chris Creamer). For us it was fun to be there. But these oppressive decisions have come in to boost short term financial gains at the expense of long-term student support (and potentially bigger financial gain).
Don't get me wrong. I like some of the initiatives such as the beergarden and Beer/wine sold at the stadium. But that shouldn't be at the expense of pre-game/half-time tailgating. Don't isolate the folks that don't have the desire or money to pay for beers when they have their own alcohol. Let the students bring their frat tailgates to the lot with DJs and whatever they want. Just let them be and let them go crazy.
Have a few security guards and 5 ambulances nearby in case things go bad... That's cheaper and more effective than oppressing and sucking money from the students and long-time fans
I swear, I though in 2012 than when we beat Colgate (homecoming) and saw the students rush the field we were building something great. The following week we beat ARMY at West Point. Ever since then we have been deconstructing the College football atmosphere at Stony Brook.
