@Seawolf97 I’m in full agreement! I don’t know what everyone else is seeing but I love football and I’m a true fan of the game these wins we have even though I’m thankful are nothing to be happy about the defense is doing their job it’s the offense the offense the offense!

It’s our SNY debut! Not to mention the first game where alcohol is being sold at LaValle.

I know we almost got 10,000 people last time, but I’d be shocked if we came even close this week. The students are pissed off and boycotting football because they moved the Homecoming tailgate away from the big lot to host a BBQ there instead.

I can see this affecting the entire season’s attendance numbers because the kids are unbelievably angry. They want to watch attendance numbers crash and burn and so many of them are flat out refusing to ever attend a football game again. Victor Ochi tweeted about it too and got plenty of support.

I'm late to this. But finally. Something is happening... even if its just chaos.

Something has to change and I'm glad the students are finally doing something. Victor Ochi is right, the CC and Liberty days where the best days for students to have fun outside and also enjoy a game. The the University slowly started marginalizing them shutting out frat tailgates, charging $$$ to park at the main lot, followed by not letting anyone out at halftime, etc, etc.

I was a student back then (2007-2012) and we actually were able to build a consistent group of student supporters who came out every game (a lot of credit goes to our student defacto leader back then - Chris Creamer). For us it was fun to be there. But these oppressive decisions have come in to boost short term financial gains at the expense of long-term student support (and potentially bigger financial gain).

Don't get me wrong. I like some of the initiatives such as the beergarden and Beer/wine sold at the stadium. But that shouldn't be at the expense of pre-game/half-time tailgating. Don't isolate the folks that don't have the desire or money to pay for beers when they have their own alcohol. Let the students bring their frat tailgates to the lot with DJs and whatever they want. Just let them be and let them go crazy.

Have a few security guards and 5 ambulances nearby in case things go bad... That's cheaper and more effective than oppressing and sucking money from the students and long-time fans

I swear, I though in 2012 than when we beat Colgate (homecoming) and saw the students rush the field we were building something great. The following week we beat ARMY at West Point. Ever since then we have been deconstructing the College football atmosphere at Stony Brook.

I feel the steering committee is trying to move SBU to the FBS DI level instead of having them be very good at this level. Recruiting has gotten better but we are better off playing schools like UCONN instead of Oregon or Utah State

Build a fan base starting with the students then the community next then all of LI then the 5 boroughs

At the Utah State game it was their first home game and they had every incoming freshmen to the school come into the field go to a section and watch the game it was awesome to see

Have door prizes for the students

There should be at every home game at least 5 HS Football Teams in attendance

For games that are away but can be reached by Bus bring a few Bus loads of students and give them a good deal

Most importantly give the students their tailgating back where it was

As far as the game went last night at times I thought we were going to blow them out of the stadium and at other times I thought they could beat us it wa a very uneven game

Yeah, I definitely agree that Athletics is making a huge mistake by prioritizing short-term economic benefits over cultivating the long-term fan base. I’ve been told that tailgating hasn’t even been officially banned, they’re just not allowed to do it in the main lot this year because that’s where the barbecue is going to be (which of course they’re charging a lot for). The kids don’t want to tailgate at the LIRR and then walk all the way to LaValle from there. The kids are supposed to be the lifeblood of the school, and last night’s show was completely embarrassing.

I am not so sure if they are eyeing the FBS. I had a conversation with SH 2 years ago about that and he laughed and said. " WE need to win our conference first before even looking at the FBS", and he is right!

SB will need to upgrade LaValle stadium and add more seating to even be considered for FBS status. And what about the 26 more scholarships they would have to shell out. I dont think SB has that kind of fan base to support 15K people or the funds to support the program. What you are witnessing here is just poor decisions by the upper chair people. They obviously don't have a clue with respect to building a larger audience, which starts with their own student fans.. They are just focusing on making money, hence, open alcohol sales inside the stadium..

When I was at the game this past Saturday I saw plenty of room between the new dome and the back of the north concession stands to host the BBQ for Homecoming. Why not do it there??

Amazingly, Army has gone on to become a team every Power 5 team fears playing.  Last year, a they took Oklahoma to OT before losing at Oklahomaand the same this year at Michigan. Army was an FBS dormat in 2012. Why can't SB improve in FCS the way Army did in FBS?

maybe what happened here is the admin thought, well if the students arent going to form a significant % of the fan base, then we may as well concentrate on the locals, donors, families, etc.  i guess what im saying is, why expend the effort if few students are on campus, and even those won't show up in any meaningful #s.

i'm also not as critical of the admin as some of you guys are, i'm more deferential.  but i think that the general idea of a college football atmosphere starts with the students.  it's hard enough to get them to games.  now we are making the gameday experience harder (?).

It all comes down to recruiting and the university doing the recruiting. Stony Brook is not known for its football so really good athletes wont consider SB when offers are being thrown their way. Even if SB were to make that move up to the FBS level. I still dont see star players wanting to play here. Just look at UMAS and UCONN. Outside of BC and Syracuse the North East is a hard sell for high school greats.

Actually, Army is a hard sell too.  There's the four year commitment, rigorous academics, required extracurricular activities and an isolated location.

It's actually your biggest complaint about SB football that turned Army's program around - a coaching change.  When Monken was hired in 2014 he did a total rebuild, which took two years, and it has worked well.

Attendance at 5700. Would like to think there is more  interest in the game v Fordham and certainly many Fordham alums in the area so I think 9K should be doable (providing the weather is good).

weve done the math on this forum before.  happy to hear corrections as these are mere shots in the dark.

lavalle holds 12.3k
assume 500 parents/friends
4k locals, donors
500 alums
500 staff, faculty, admin, athletics, etc
maybe 500 students
other?

and that's 6000.  with conservative estimates (meaning, larger #s than i really think in reality).

that leaves 6300 seats.  we all know they count tickets, not bodies.

options remaining to fill those seats:
-the over 10k students living on/around campus (not even there by thursday night)
-more locals sitting in traffic on nicholls road when they can instead watch B1G games on national TV
