What about non-students?  Suffolk County alone has about 1.5 million people. Nassau has another 1.4 million.  Even if you only count the eastern half of Nassau, that is over 2 million people.  If SB football could draw one-half of 1% of that, it would add an additional 10,000 spectators.

SB should be Suffolk's team for all sports, especially football.  It is absurd that more of the community doesn't attend games.  Reasons?  Newsday's vapid coverage, not enough social media publicity, mediocre community relations.  What else?  What more could the Athletics Department do?

Crowd doesn't look bad, but doesn't look particularly impressive either. What in the world do we have to do in order to get people to show up for games here??
Thursday evening games are rough..
9600 people

9,652 is the most people we’ve got for a non-homecoming game. Ninth most attended in program history. Sure felt like it to me. We got to keep it up, though.

Which as a commuter school is more in line with what I expected and is honestly fantastic. Especially given the opponent. Fact is that weekday games aren't as bad for SBU as they would be for most schools since we have such a large commuter population. Something to think about should the MAC come calling one day.

I think the fact that the stadium was expanded last year and everyone is more spread out now makes the attendance seem like it is less than it is. I really hope we can get 14k out for the JMU game. It's homecoming against what could very well be the #1 team in the country. If that can't get us ATLEAST 14k then lol.

Let's keep in mind that Stony Brook isn't really a commuter school. at least not by definition. It's the largest residential campus in the SUNY system with over 10,000 residents. The challenge is keeping the residents on campus on weekends and engaged in student life
We do have a good number of actual commuters (day students) and we have a good number of students who live close enough to EASILY go home on the weekends. (That is a byproduct of being near NYC and on a densely populated island. Both of those areas are chock full of good students who know an excellent school when they see one.)
That being said, in some ways a Thurs game might pull in more students than a Friday/ Saturday game.  Not saying more fans - just saying maybe more students.

Did anybody notice all the Varsity and JV football teams sitting on the visiting side? My son's team, Ward Melville, Sachem North, and East teams were at the game. That help to bring up the attendance of last night game, but next week starts High School football on Saturdays. The student section was quite packed, too which helped. As the season goes on and starts getting cold the student section will drop significantly, as expected. Most games should average around 6500 to 8000 per game, which is very good for SB. The Homecoming game this year aginst JMU will probably be the biggest attended game this stadium has ever seen. Assuming the weather is nice..

I know we had a bunch HS teams at game last because their season hadn’t begun yet but SBU should still be able to get teams every week because there are more HS games being played on Friday night than ever before so the plan should be to get those teams to come out to a game on Saturday

Unfortunately, I missed game, but glad to see a solid winning opener. SBU needs to fill seats. I mentioned a few ideas on another thread, but I’ll re-state a few here: 1) Athletic dept on game days needs to go around dorms and “drag” students to games; 2) incentivize students to come to games by offering free semester tuition (and/or board) to a lucky student every game. Athletic dept should budget for this; 3) Offer free tickets to an expanded radius of Long Island middle and high schoolers who play football; 4) Come up with an online (and print version) of an SBU Football magazine, which is sent to every middle and high school football program on Long Island. A combo of these things will help the program gain visibility and will put some asses in the seats. Oh yeah, SNY is s huge win, and will help expand the base.
How old a Seawolf am I? I followed them during their Final 4 DIII hoops run in 1977-78 (they were called the Patriots then)

There were a few high school teams in attendance. Sachem, ward melville, centereach, Stepinac, Sayville. A bunch of youth teams also. It was a nice crowd for a holiday weekend. There is alot more people standing now with the new additions.

The school has wasted no time with the promotions, because Sep. 14 vs Wagner ads are already up on the TVs where the Bryant ones used to play.

That is just awesome to hear! Finally, Finally!!!

I would also hope that on gameday they broadcast the SNY feed on campus TVs. They MUST!

I watched the Stanford-Northwestern game this past weekend . Stanford's stadium was almost empty . Entire sections with no fans .  They  didnt have 9600  but probably around 30k if that . The  reason given by the announcers was its a day game  and its almost 90 degrees . It was 89 at kick off and apparently the students went else where including their  dorms which have AC .  So we are not alone .  Just a note the Oregon/Auburn game was not a sellout .  Good seats were available at kick off at AT&T Stadium in Dallas . So everyone is having some problems drawing fans .
