Another thing I look at when SB signs an athlete is if he or she are getting  multiple offers.. For example.. Carbone had 0 offers coming out of high school... That should be a red flag.. I know it is not easy pulling athletes away from bigger schools, but in order to be competitive, you must

Agreed but it can be difficult to find out how many offers kids have, and some kids aren't always truthful about what schools are recruiting them. With football recruits, I like to see the highlights more than anything else.

A coach once told at some football high school game years ago, He never watches highlight tape. If he has an athlete in mind he will watch as many live games as possible to find the good and bad in the kid.. I agree with his statement.

My son plays football for WM and he only puts up his best plays, never his bad ..

So far I dont see any local, Long Island kids signing.. A kid from West Hampton high school just signed with NH.

Co winner of the Hansen award, best player on Long Island.. Thats huge! Would have been nice to grab this kid..

Probably because of our recruiting tactic of signing out of state kids then making local kids "walk-on." As long as we have a solid class at the end of the day I'm fine with it. We were I think 20th in the FCS last year which could be better, but is still really good. We already have the talent to compete with anyone. Hopefully these QB commits pan out as that's the position where we've had a very hard time getting and developing talent.

I think the new signing period is great for schools like SBU

The 11 players that will sign today were on a lot of FBS schools radar especially as preferred walk-ons so now they can concentrate od other players for the February 07 signing day

This early group of signees included many very good skill position guys so I'm very happy

As far as LI players expect about 8 preferred walk-ons and maybe 2 scholarship kids in February

Totally agree with the QB issue. I have a huge issue with the "Walk-on" crap with our local kids! You have no idea how that pisses me off especially when my boy plays Varsity football and he hears other high school athletes talking bad about SB policy, tactis or whatever they call it..

Here is the problem with the LI HS Football players from an SBU stand point from February through July every year is the evaluation period and when the LI players go up against the City kids and out of state kids they don't grade out well weather it be their HT, Speed, Competitiveness, ETC or they don't do any camps at all so the player has got to do a better job. Until other CAA schools or FBS schools offer these kids SBU is going to continue to not offer a scholarship but rather ask them to walk-on that's is the reality of recruiting on LI. By the way having said this there will probably be around 6-12 players who will get money from FCS/FBS schools for the 2018 Class so players on LI have a choice walk on at SBU or another FCS school or go DII and maybe get some money

I've heard coaches want to see high light reels because they want to see what the player is capable of. After that they'll have the players send some actual game tape.

I have mentioned this before. Using preferred walk-ons is a tool used by all schools. It allows you to bring in a bigger class without counting against your scholly limit. The reason that local kids are brought in as preferred walk-ons is that they qualify for state money ( grants, aid, etc ). A preferred walk on can be givenba scholly at anytime but they will usually earn them after their second yr in the program. If they are offered the scholly before the 2nd yr is up then that will count against the scholarship limit from the original class yr. Some preferred walk ons qualify for full financial aid. This is not a bad thing. This is how Liotine earned a scholarship.

Just to add to this. SB offers top LI and in state players scholarships, examples Bedell, Gowins, Haggert. Its up to the player to except. Dalton Crossan was offered a full but chose UNH instead. It worked out pretty well for him. U just cant control that.

FBS transfers are always interesting. They were recruited to that level for a reason. Let's hope he pans out and winds up being a solid player for us.

It's hard to guess how much of an impact he'll have at WR, but if he'd played in every game last season for Temple, he's going to contribute to Stony Brook in some capacity.

I don't have any inside information or special knowledge, but I think it's important to note that both Jordan Gowins and Donald Liotine will be back next season.  So, I think it would take a very unusual happenstance to unseat them as the primary running RBs.  It is worth noting, however, that based upon video I've seen there are a couple of real studs coming in as freshman (Ty'son Lawton and Rahsul Faison)

QB is going to be the really interesting one to watch.  Obviously, Carbone will start out as Coach P's choice.  But, in addition to Tyquell Fields, who still hasn't had a real opportunity to show his wears, the two freshman coming in (Josh Zamot and Danny Sanchez) are probably going to make the Seawolves the deepest they've ever been at that po0sition.  After watching the FBS semi-final and championship games this year, nobody's going to convince me that being a freshman precludes being an excellent QB.
