2017 Spring Practice
« on: April 09, 2017, 09:32:35 pm »
Three things that are a must for SBU to achieve a good year;

QB play has to improve..
Play calling & using the short passing game to open up the long ball.
DL pressure off the edge & Better pass coverage

We have players on offensive side that can make this happen; but the QB needs to be abe to read & react.

The QB position is a question mark for now.   But if its Fields or Carbone they will also need time to throw  let alone the skill to throw

I feel like this football team is a battleship that has no captain to drive the ship!. I mean. You cant have a winning program without a good QB, and HC, bottom line.. You can have a team filled with 5 star players, but if you dont have a QB who can throw, or has the football IQ to scramble when he should, etc.... a team is lost at sea.. Just how i feel..

I totally agree. If we don't have good QB play, we'll never get over the hump and be competitive. We're one QB (and a competent coach) away from being a playoff team. Have to get it done. We haven't had good QB play since Essington graduated. You don't have to set the world on fire in our offense either. Just be competent and don't turn the ball over.

With a solid QB, I am confident that this team will be in the playoffs. We just honestly need somebody as good as Essington- he would get the ball reliably downfield but wasn't a showstopper by any means. I can't say that we have had a good (or even average) QB since he left which is ridiculous. This is a solid FCS program and really ought to have at least a marginal QB. That guy from Sacred Heart last year looked better than anything we have had.

I'm still holding out hope on Fields- I think we all know what Carbone brings to the table but Fields at least is a wildcard. Now if it doesn't look like Fields is the solution, I'd be ringing up all those FBS arms that are looking for instant playing time if I was in Priore's shoes. I hate to rely on transfers but this team needs to start producing. There is so much talent at RB/WR that this offense can definitely go places.

OK, People. I think i am listening to some ACC coach talk about their star QB.. Am I missing something here? Does coach P really think Carbone had a wonderful season last season and is picking up where he left off??? I am confused. Please translate into my language to what coach P is trying to portray about our QB situation...

Dazed and confused!!!!!!!

first of all, who cares how Carbone played in a spring scrimmage.  Carbone sucked last season, you cant put a bow on a pig.  statistically speaking, Carbone had one of the worst seasons that I have ever seen of a QB, certainly for a starting QB at the college level.  what's more to see with him.  as long as Fields can learn the playbook, he's got to get a shot.

If Carbone is the QB, I don't think I'll be able to stomach watching the team play. His QB play was by no definition good- I have no idea how Priore said in that video on the SBU webpage that he played well. 3 TDs to 12 INT, 52% completion percentage, 1.3 YPC when he did run the ball. Overall, I hate to knock these college kids but they're not putting him in a position to succeed.

All we need is somebody to be at least as good as Lyle Negron was, not asking for too much. I can only imagine what this team would be with Kyle Essington levels of production from 2012 for example (23 TDs to 8 INTs and 59% completion percentage).

You better care how someone plays in a scrimmage because it's about competing and if you don't show improvement then how can you expect to be any better in live action.

The main reason we didn't bring in another QB was Coach P didn't want to have 5 young QB's so it comes down to this at this point right now Carbone is #1 with Fields #2 and Cassidy #3 and so expect the short passing game to the TE/RB to be a big part of the offense in 2017 because Carbone takes to many sacks, too many interceptions and makes to many mistakes.

I think it's a damn shame Stony Brook can't find a top FCS QB who wants to come to this university to study and play football. . There must be something internal driving athletics away. . I think I have a hunch..

Someone has to be able to throw the ball down field   30 or 40 yards and complete a pass .  The running game will take of itself if passing becomes a key part of our offense . And yes Essington was the last  QB we had that could manage a game  via the pass .   We shall see  . I was in Tampa the past two weeks and the local news has USF has pre season top 25 program under their new head coach.   I would like to see us score at least a couple times.

That is true with every DI Lacrosse Team QB's make up a big part of their team. the reason being in HS QB's are usually the best athlete and they play multiple sports especially on LI. I know for 2017 Class at least 25 QB's have committed to play Lacrosse in College.

I know it's only late April however the next 2 weeks are very important for the QB's for the following reasons; Joe Carbone is now a 4th year junior and is healthy so if he has improved like the Coaches say he has he's got to show it on the field and I don't mean just his throwing but his QB IQ which I think he lacks, the ability to pick up not only his 1st option but his 2nd & 3rd as well, know when to run with the ball and not run, throw the ball out of bounds when his receivers are covered and not force the pass. I have  spoken to the Coaches and it sounds like to me that Fields will start the season as #2 because he hasn't shown that he deserves to start at this time and is not that far ahead of the 3rd string QB Cassidy.

It's a long shot at best but if after next weeks Spring Game and the QB's are still not where they need to be and a QB from a DI College becomes available Coach P might reconsider his options
