James Madison dismisses three football players
Harrisonburg, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - James Madison football coach Everett Withers dismissed three players from the program Wednesday following their offseason suspensions. Two were starters last season.
The three were starters Jimmy Moreland, a cornerback coming off a big freshman season, and Rhakeem Stallings, a linebacker entering his junior campaign, and K.J. Ford, a nose guard who was redshirted as a freshman last season.
According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the three were charged with petit larceny of less than $200 not from a person, a misdemeanor, on March 19, following an incident on Feb. 16.
"It is my responsibility to grow and mentor young people as we take our journey through the process of building a culture in the JMU football program," Withers said. "We must establish a foundation that seeks competitive excellence on and off the field. We set standards and we mentor our student-athletes to meet those standards. Unfortunately, these three young men are no longer associated with James Madison University football due to violations of our team core values and disregard for the legal system. When individuals threaten the integrity of our team, appropriate action will be taken."
Moreland had three interceptions and five blocked kicks and scored a pair of touchdowns as James Madison went 9-4 and qualified for the FCS playoffs last season.
Stallings ranked third on the team with 80 tackles.
