Since I have not been following the recruiting much, what do you guys think of the 2014 recruiting? Solid? How about comparing to CAA peers? Can we be in the upper half of the CAA table this year?

Comparing to our peers, all I know is that QB Pat Irwin picked us over Albany and Jason Wright chose us over Nova. Other than who else was recruiting them, I think it's impossible to tell.

I really like the tight ends. Daniel's and Wright both remind me of Tye, athletic tight ends with great hands. I think Josh Valentine is a bit of a project, but the sky's the limit. I also think Raymond Jones is a complete steal. Darin Peart had a Buffalo offer. Wingate was ESPN 3 star (I don't put much stock in ESPN rankings though). Jakob Wolfe put up really good combine numbers - a little skinny but his athleticism is very intriguing and his high school was really good this fall.

I like the class.

On the questions of LI recruiting vs other areas, there was a recent post that has each county's FBS+FCS player counts:

http://mode.github.io/blog/2014-01-16-football-hometowns/index.html

By count Nassau and Suffolk produce the most in NYS, as they should for their population. By ratio of players produced to population, counties such as Onondaga, Saratoga, and Rockland perform slightly better than LI. Rockland makes since as we've seen talented kids who live there but commute over to NJ to play for Bosco or Bergen Cath.

NYC has too many massive high schools that don't play the game, keeping their numbers lower than typical large counties in the US. If more NYC kids could play, NY's overall D-1 count would jump. Most years between 25-35 players go FBS, low for a state of 19M. Based on last seasons FBS recruit count, NY produced more FBS recruits than South Carolina, but its ratio was much lower:

http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1470883

Buffalo and Rochester do well with high-level recruits just as LI has. Kids grow up loving the Bills, and we have some strong private schools who will take on catholic powers from Cleveland, Erie, and LI. A few seasons ago there were 10 players on NFL rosters who came out of Buffalo-area high schools.

Thank you RecoveringHillbilly.. This is exactly what I was looking for.  As you can see from the chart  Long Island, Jersey, Conn. and South East Pennsylvania produce a lot of FBS players. Even though the the South East and Cali produce more FBS players per capita, we do quite well considering our climate..

If we are ever going to expand Lavalle stadium to 15,000 seats we must continue to recruit from within as well as winning games and championships!   Speaking of lavalle, I ran into Senator Lavalle at last week SBB game and I asked him about the expansion of the stadium and whatever happened to the $$$ allocated for it and he told me the expansion will in fact happen but, they want to go right to 15,000 seats and not jut expand a few thousand seats like original planed.... I'll believe it when I see it!!! LOL..

I don't buy this from Logan's recent start about Kinder being the leader to be our starting QB.  Kinder won't show up until the summer and will have a mighty steep learning curve.  Additionally kinder has not played a luck in four years at Syracuse, let alone at QB.

"Kinder, who starred at Lawrence High, has just one year of eligibility left as a graduate student and figures to be the leading contender to replace departing starter Lyle Negron at quarterback. Bedell, who was the co-Hansen Award winner as the top player in Suffolk County in 2011 at William Floyd, adds a speed component at running back in a rotation with starter Marcus Coker and backup James Kenner."

I scanned through the 2014 football signings for the other CAA teams.  SB has by far the most diverse recruiting pull, especially with bringing in 4 kids for California.  the next best CAA team with Cali recruits had just one kid.

another interesting comment that Coach P made in the newsday interview was that SB focused on bringing in offensive guys this year, in an attempt to bolster the offensive output against the tough CAA teams.

With respect to all of your points about the roster, look at rosters across the country - both Div 1 + 1 AA.    No school exclusive recruits their own state anymore.    The global country/ media world we live in allows schools to go after the best talent that fits their systems.   In reviewing the SB roster and '14 class, it looks like we got the good ones from LI we needed to keep.
Never said exclusive to LI or NY, I mentioned the metro area in regards to regional recruiting.
I don't really understand where this has gone. It's a luxury that Stony Brook has the budget to fly their coaches across the country the way we do. The coaches cast a big net and bring in the players that best fit their system. Not every team can afford those recruiting trips.

Personally I really like our roster demographics. I think there's a good balance of instate and out of state student athletes.

(As a side not that's not really related), for whatever reason it seems like a lot of the best recruits on Long Island get very little recognition. Cody Precht's Stony Brook career has been incredible, but in high school he received no ink and very few accolades. I distinctly remember being very underwhelmed by the singing since I knew nothing about him. Somehow Dante Allen wasn't invited to boomer game.
And I totally agree that LI kids get very little recognition and are under recruited at times. You can't tell me that the water in NJ is any different.

I really like this kid from Commack, Josh Valentin, TE.... He reminds me of Will Tye... He's built just like him and is actually a little bigger 280 lbs.. I would love to see them both out on the field the same time...   Do you think Priore will be redshirted him or allow him to play, right away!!!!!!!

Talking about possibly making it into an FBS school, Josh could have gone but choose  SB instead.. He is  ranked #12 in NYS..  Some people don't look at rankings but i do!!!!!

Valentin looks good, love the way he likes to block. Coach P must love that too

Hammer, thanks for the heads up on your Twitter account about the Bryant game being moved to Thursday August 28th.  maybe we will get some TV action with that early game.  I that is the first weekend of college football, so we might get showcased on TV as one of the early weekend games.

It would only make sense that its on TV so they move it to a Thursday. Any other way, its a pointless move. I'll be there no matter what. Can't wait for Football. Can't wait for Stony Brook at Connecticut!

Peart was arguably the second best player at Erasmus Hall.  Two others went to FBS schools (Syracuse,Ohio St.) and a few others went to FCS schools, including one to Rhode Island.  Pretty nice pickup.  I'd be surprised if he redshirted.

One more thing: he received an offer from Buffalo and chose SB.

not sure if accurate but was told Sam Ilario from West Islip committed to Rhode Island...don't know if SBU recruited him but a legit FCS athlete.  Not sure if will play qb in college but has athleticism for DB and seemed to be a nice fit.  Again, don't know the facts, just an observation!
