JMU fans are PISSED. So much anger in that thread and on the rest of the board. Expecting the man to stay on given the opportunity to more than double his salary. I get it that Charlotte isn't the best program, but them being so new gives him the chance to leave his mark and really build that place up from scratch. At the end of the day, it's still an FBS job in a desirable market. Take note that even the best of FCS ain't all that compared to FBS.

I would still rather SB make it and stay at an elite level of FCS than bounce around in the cellar of FBS. Winning and being competitive in the post season generates more excitement than losing at a higher level.

It really depends on what we're playing for. If we're playing for the Access Bowl, bowls against P5 competition, or otherwise bowls against good teams, then moving up definitely makes sense. If we're moving up though to go 6-6 and play another 6-6 team in the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl in front of 50 people, then I'd rather have the FCS playoffs.

Buffalo is in line to win the MAC this year and have an 11 win season. You know what their reward is going to be? The Dollar General Bowl against the third place team in the Sun Belt (if that). They could do much worse than that, but you're talking about an 11 win team playing in a weak bowl. The G5 conferences really need to negotiate better bowl tie-ins during the next go round, but I'd rather have the FCS playoffs than a low end bowl. I agree there.

That said, should a spot in a regional G5 conference open up (with teams like Temple, Umass, JMU,Delaware, etc.) I think we should take it. At least there we'd be playing regional teams with a higher profile. As it stands though with the current tie-ins, FBS bowls aren't that appealing unless you make the access bowl against a top 10 P5 team. I've somewhat changed my stance on this as joining the MAC, going 6-6 against Bowling Green and Kent State, then maybe playing ULM in a crappy bowl game isn't as appealing to me as the FCS playoffs. The number of bowl games needs to be cut in half.

Sometimes I'll briefly tune in to ESPN to watch one of the MAC games on each week. You can hear an echo with all the empty seats. The students and community don't care about games at the lower FBS level. I'm not privvy to the finances involved but wouldn't want to take one dollar away from academics to fund something like that.

three thoughts-

if we want to move up to the FBS, we should work on attendance first.

secondly, if we do want to move, we can't lose to winless albany, or lay an egg against AFA.

third.  the FCS has been gaining ground steadily on the FBS in the last ten years.  any putative move to FBS in the next ten (let's say) could be a very different landscape.

ok and a fourth- i understand it's more than just about attendance, competing at that level, the fans' needs, etc.  it's about money, tv contracts, stadia, geography, expenses, conference affiliations, etc.
There are 29,413,039 corporations in America; but only one Chairman of the Board.

Our AD isn't  going to be here forever .  He has plans of his own Im sure . I suspect FBS and a new conference is in the works  sooner rather than later .  We can improve all we want at the FCS level we already play in the toughest FCS  conference now so we are at the top .  Win more games and grab a championship is a good goal  but loaded with what ifs .  The indoor practice facility is a key sign of bigger and better things on the horizon .  I would not be surprised if we are in an FBS  conference in 3 years barring a total collapse  of the program .   The upside is playing some good G5 teams and getting some tough FBS teams to come to the Brook for non conference. This is the overall goal of the Athletic department and the University .  Buffalo this year which is doing really well got just 29000 for Homecoming this year.   They keeping talking about next steps other than win an FCS Title there are non. All we can do is win more games now which lately has been struggle .

Funny, I've thought the same thing. Heilbron is a west coast guy coming from UCLA then Oregon State. The fact that we were able to get him to come all the way over here in the first place speaks volumes about our university and athletic program. That said, he's doing quite well here and if a fairly high profile job opens up out west, we may not be able to keep him. That's the reality at this level. Really the only guys you can count on to stay long term are those with deep ties to the school and/or region. That said, I'm very happy with what Shawn is doing now. It seems like everything has been winning lately. You need an AD with a vision at Heilbron has that. You wouldn't believe some of the things I've heard said about JMU's AD. Their program is simply better than ours right now, yet there seems to be a lack of vision there if you listened to their fans (many think they should have taken the Sun Belt invite five years ago). We don't have that problem here.

Something probably is in the works, and has been since the last wave of conference realignment started in 2010. There were even rumors that we talked with the MAC about joining as a travel partner for UMASS if they brought all their sports on board. I completely believe those rumors. Only Heilbron and Stanley would know for sure though.

In the past I've been in the "FBS at all costs" crowd and wanted to get there ASAP, but even I think three years is unrealistic lol. I'd peg it at 5-6 at least simply because there's no need for conferences to be proactive with all the shuffling that may wind up happening with the Big 12 and TV contracts by 2025. SBU in many ways sticks out above the rest as a prime expansion candidate, so I wouldn't be surprised if we moved, but as I mentioned above, think about the FCS playoffs vs the low end bowls.

Unless we do what Western Michigan did a couple years ago, or what UCF has done these last two years, those are the kind of bowls we'd get.  In the current landscape the only conference that makes sense and would realistically invite us is the MAC, and then you're right back to the FCS playoffs vs the Who Cares Bowl and weeknight games dilemma once again. The MAC is still a one-bid basketball conference with further travel, and might be a downgrade in everything else. We could still go there, but it's not the no-brainer I once thought it was. The MAC is a great bus league and is good for everyone currently in it, but as a far eastern outlier who would have to fly to every game, I'm not 100% on it. Get a couple regional schools in the fold though and it becomes an easier decision.

Conventional thinking says if you get an FBS invite take it as you don't know when the next one will come. JMU rebuked this when they turned the Sun Belt five years ago, and Idaho basically did the same thing when they downgraded to FCS. Although if an actual invite is there for us and waiting, it's much harder to say no.

Listen, I think in the early Fall i put it on this forum. I had a conversation with SH about this exact topic and he looked at me straight in the eye as if i was crazy. He basically said, win the CAA conference first then maybe we can start talking about a move into the FBS conference. He also said the money associated with the move is enormous, not to mention, the stadium would need to be expanded.

Bottom line, 3-5 years is not even a thought. 10 years, we can maybe start talking about a move into the FBS.. All from the horse's mouth, not mine!!

id add- not only is the cost for this move HUGE, but we are in some fiscal difficulties as we speak.

I remember that. I also remember saying that if something actually were in the works SH would never tell you. Things like that must be kept quiet until the very last moment. SH would never just casually say "yeah, we're totally going FBS and have an invite from the MAC in hand" in a public setting. That kind of talk can easily leak out. The way these things work is there are behind the scenes discussions for years about it, then over the course of a few days all the news seeming comes out of nowhere, when it reality it has been in the works for years.

I agree the optics of moving to FBS in light of all the budget issues at the school would have poor optics to the public, but it's definitely doable and wouldn't cost all that much more money. You ignore the additional media dollars, bowl payout, gate revenue, CFP payout, etc. that being FBS would give us.

We keep talking about the MAC as a potential landing spot, tell me how we couldn't pull an FBS move off if we already have a larger athletic budget than half the conference? We already spend FBS money without the accompanying revenue.

Read this before deciding if going FBS is in SBU's best interests. When future students are asked to subsidize the program, not sure they'll agree it was a great idea.

Athletics has never been about turning a profit. Not at this level. It's more about student life and alumni engagement which wind up generating a return back to the university in ways far beyond(lol) the balance sheet. The article even states this.

Quote
"The value that athletics brings to campus life, life-long connection to alumni, and enhancing diversity on campus are all important outcomes from athletic programs that need to be celebrated and shared."

If you're insinuating that sports which don't make money should be dropped, then college athletics should be done away with entirely and the NCAA abolished.

My only concern with regards to football is the concussion/CTE issue and declining participation at the youth level. Declining participation trickling up to the high school, college, and eventually NFL level is what I worry about as far as the future of football. If the sport as a whole is in decline, then maybe going FBS doesn't make sense. That's an entirely different issue than a couple million bucks in the athletic budget though.
