SBU has PT, is that what you mean by athletic training?  perhaps different...

At one time SBU head a Physical Education Department which they got rid of and they also had a Teaching Department which they got rid of these are two areas which attract athletes to. CW Post has these which could cause problems for recruiting that type of athlete.

Post and Merrimack are both moving up to The Northeast Conference that we used to be part of.

They also had an Athletic Training Program   which was a 4 year program which they dropped also about two years ago.  Our former hoops player Jacob Petras  was one of the last to get his degree in .  Big market for those kids at the college level and pro level .  You graduated as an Licensed athletic trainer and NY State EMT all in one.

That academic and program angle was one I had not thought of when I first heard the news. On the whole though, we're in the CAA, and they're in the NEC. Additionally, despite them being private, SBU is the more well regarded school overall.

I'm not jumping for joy over the news of no longer being Long Island's only division 1 football program, but I'm not all that worried. We're still in the premier football conference in the region for the FCS. LIU is a transitioning school from D2 and will be playing in an inferior conference. Only thing I really think of this is that they might make a decent backfill for us in the CAA when the day comes that we go FBS.

Just saw an interesting story in Newsday on-line LIU Post is going to merge all of their athletic programs with the Brooklyn campus and begin move up to DI including football which will play in the FCS starting in 2019. The football stadium will be upgraded however the one stumbling block will be if the town ordinance will be lifted to allow them to play night games.

This could effect SBU with recruiting because they have programs such as teaching and athletic training which SBU doesn't have

I saw that. Good for them.

But do CAA level recruits overlap with NEC recruits? That's an honest question.

I would think they don't... but maybe at this level things overlap more than what I think. You guys probably know better

I also think SBU can offer a lot more than LIU can from a football athlete perspective. The amount of resources SBU has invested in facilities is pretty significant.

But hey, in the worst case scenario we can play Fordham/LIU as regional rivals now that Hofstra FB has been out of the picture

Low student turnout is not only an SBU issue. Apparently, Alabama has a problem with that too.

that's what i used to think and then when you look at the details of which schools our athletes looked at, it's usually hofstra, fairfield, st john's, marist, albany, dowling, bingo, etc.  meaning those are our competitors.  some very different institutions.

i'd like to think that we compete with the larger state schools in the northeast- but sometimes we really dont- that is, uconn, massachusetts, rutgers, state penn, cuse forestry, cornell ag, etc.

my point is that programs can grow very quickly these days and kids do love having their family get to campus easily for a game.  just my opinion and admittedly an anecdotal one at that...

EX-STONY BROOK FOOTBALL STUD DOMINICK REYES FIGHTS ON MAIN CARD AT UFC 229

Stony Brook University alumn Dominick Reyes (9-0) is fighting on the main card against Ovince Saint Preux (22-11).

Reyes, before he was known as The Devastator, played college football for the Seawolves, where he was the starting safety from 2009 to 2012.

LAS VEGAS – Dominick Reyes (10-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) kept his perfect record unblemished with a brilliant decision win over Ovince Saint Preux (23-11 MMA, 11-6 UFC) that looked a lot like a knockout.

His breakthrough moment came June 2, 2017, at LFA 13 at the Los Angeles-Burbank Marriott Convention Center in Burbank. After cracking Jordan Powell with some punches, Powell dared to laugh off Reyes’ strikes and showboat a bit.

And that’s when Reyes quickly crushed Powell with the head kick seen around the world. The knockout went viral, garnering millions of views online.

I only watch UFC casually and very sparingly, but it's great to see a Seawolf having success!! I'll definitely be on the lookout for him in upcoming fights.

Other thoughts:

Sagarin playoff projection (behind JMU, Elon, Delaware): http://www.college-sports-journal.com/csj-sagarin-2018-ncaa-fcs-playoff-projection-oct-21/

Also note Sagarin puts MVC quite a bit in front of the CAA.  Athlon did the same but no power rating.

Colgate is just in front of us, plays a much weaker schedule, pitched 3 shutouts, and nearly two others.  has only surrendered two TDs so far.

STATS has maine in front of us, forgiving the W&M loss.
