Read this before deciding if going FBS is in SBU's best interests. When future students are asked to subsidize the program, not sure they'll agree it was a great idea.

Athletics has never been about turning a profit. Not at this level. It's more about student life and alumni engagement which wind up generating a return back to the university in ways far beyond(lol) the balance sheet. The article even states this.

Quote
"The value that athletics brings to campus life, life-long connection to alumni, and enhancing diversity on campus are all important outcomes from athletic programs that need to be celebrated and shared."

If you're insinuating that sports which don't make money should be dropped, then college athletics should be done away with entirely and the NCAA abolished.

My only concern with regards to football is the concussion/CTE issue and declining participation at the youth level. Declining participation trickling up to the high school, college, and eventually NFL level is what I worry about as far as the future of football. If the sport as a whole is in decline, then maybe going FBS doesn't make sense. That's an entirely different issue than a couple million bucks in the athletic budget though.
