SB is now ranked #139 in the Sagarin ratings  http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbt11.htm

The Wolves are higher than a dozen or so 1A teams, and only six behind Liberty. It's the highest they've been. Sagarin is more meaningful than RPI because it considers margin of victory , as well as win-loss record and quality of opponents. The Big South would also use it in its tie-breaking formula for who goes to the playoffs.

I don't ever really look at football rpi or sagarin rankings so I don't know how accurate they are, but I have to think the sample size is too small to have a good comparison. I think Buffalo is a lot better than their sagarin ranking. I have to think they would be at least a top 10 IAA team.

I know 'woulda coulda shoulda' but this Stony Brook team could easily be 7-1 right now. I have to think if they finished the season 9-2 with losses to Buffalo and Liberty they would get an at large. Anyone agree?

I've also been thinking about the Big South strength as a conference. Obviously it's not elite IA competition, but I think it might be better than it gets credit for (or at least it's hard to tell how good they are). The Big South ooc schedules are probably some of the toughest in IAA. I don't know if any conference plays more money games per team than the big south and then the majority of the remaining games are against the Southern Conference or CAA (elite IAA conferences) teams. Presbyterian probably has the most challenging out of conference schedule in the country.

Of course I agree. If Stony Brook would've pulled a win at UTEP and won the Brown game even if they lost to Liberty they would probably get the at-large. But its too late now. We have to hope for a win in the next three games to get a auto-bid.

Yeah I only ask because there seems to be this idea that Big South isn't multi bid conference, and that regardless of the teams play your not getting an at large if don't get the auto which I think is nonsense.

It's nonsense, but the unfortunate truth is that that is how the conference is seen by those who make the playoff decisions.  As a conference our OOC record is not great.  SBU and Liberty are the only two teams with overall winning records, and both have 3 losses.  This is typical for the last couple of years.  I doubt a Big South team gets an at-large until these things start to change.  Also, some wins in the playoffs by our auto-bid team would help.

The top two of the conference are good (whether thats Liberty-CCU or Liberty-SBU). But the bottom teams **** it up. we need a strong CSU and VMI.

There will be no at-large candidate from the Big South in 2011 for larger reasons than simply conference disrespect.
An NCAA guideline states that to get into the FCS playoff field, a team needs 7 wins against D-1 competition.  This is a guideline, not a rule, but it has never been set aside in the entire history of the I-AA/FCS playoffs.  In the case of this season, neither SBU's win over St. Anselm or Liberty's win over Kentucky Wesleyan count toward that total, leaving the loser of the SBU-LU game with only 6 D-1 wins.

Any word on whether Adrian Coxson's appeal to play this fall was granted or how he's looked during spring practice?

Liberty announced its intention to go FBS. With Stony Brook and others likley to bolt to better FCS conferences at the first opportunity (almost certainly the CAA for SBU)), I don't think we'll see a Big South conference around in three or four years

Anyone heard anything about Jackolski. Camp invites, CFL, anything.
