Liberty has been ranked just about every week from the past 4 seasons. What has that gotten us? Nothing. We would gladly trade in all of our rankings, including our current one, for a win Saturday. At this level, rankings mean very, very little.

With your QB and top receiver graduating this year, are expectations high for next year (staying in the Top 20) or are Liberty fans preparing for a let down?

I know we have possibly the biggest game in Stony Brook history coming up, but the 2012 Stony Brook team is going to be NICE. I think we return 16 starters and something like 35 players from our two deep.

Our expectations will stay high. We fully expect to compete for and win another conference championship next year. Yes we lose alot at our skill positions - QB, 3 of our top 4 WRs, TE, but we also return most everything else. All of our RBs will be back. 4 of 5 starting OLine, 9 of our 11 starters on Defense. Our understudy at QB is a RJR and has had a lot of snaps over his career. He's been Mike Brown's backup for 3 years now. We also have 2 QBs redshirting this year. One is "the next Mike Brown" and the other is a tall, big white kid who turned down a scholly offer to Wake and other BCS programs. It will be an interesting battle to see who wins the full time job next year and moving forward.

Our conference schedule next year:
SBU - home
GW - home
CSU - home
As you all know we haven't lost at home in conference since 2006. We don't plan on starting anytime soon. I don't see either GW or CSU coming in and beating us. You guys will be a challenge, but with us at home I like our chances. Just look at the results from your previous 2 trips to Lynchburg.

CCU - away
VMI - away
PC - away
CCU will always be tough down on the beach. I'm not worried about VMI. And PC will be solid, but we will still be favored and should win.

Hard to say we won't expect to win another conference championship even if we are in a reloading type of year. A lot of people said 2009 would be the year to knock us off.

Anyways, there's plenty of time to talk about next year during the offseason. Huge game for both teams and the conference coming up on Saturday. I've heard it referred to as the biggest game in conference history.

By my count, Liberty returns 14 starters and 30 from the 2 deep.

I'd like to see both Liberty and SB on fire next year so the other gets an at-large bid. It's going to take both teams losing no more than two games each, but even with one or more BCS opponents on the schedule, it's possible.

I honestly think the conference is only going to get better. I think coach Nichol's is doing a great job at Presbyterian and expect them to just get better every year as they continue to add scholarships and settle in D1A football. I think Gardner Webb is only going to get better next year as Dickerson has another year to put his system in place. Coastal has been very good in the past and there's no reason why they can't be that good again. I definitely think the Big South can be a two bid league next year.

Liberty's OOC schedule next year will be very difficult:
@ Wake Forest
vs Lehigh (Patriot League champ 2 years running)
vs Norfolk St (MEAC champ)
another game which hasn't been confirmed yet against an FCS power

If we come through all of that plus conference play with only 2 losses I'll be doing cartwheels.

The last game is against richmond right? And then the 5th out of conference would be a d2? I'd expect you guys to go 3 and 2 out of conference with that schedule and then one loss in the big south and hopefully you would get an at large.

Stony Brook 2012 ooc looks like this
@Army
@Marshall or Cincinatti I forget which
Central connecticut
Colgate

I think 2012 will be a special team for Stony Brook. I think 1 out of conference loss is a real possibility. The big loss to graduation is Jackolski who without question is a special player, but I think Cruz will step into that role quite nicely. Cruz has 330 yards (averaging 11.1 ypc) and 4 touchdowns in his 30 carries this season. With 4 offensive lineman and all of our tight ends/fullbacks returning, I don't think the running game will miss a beat. Essington comes back with more experience and veteran recievers in Norrell and Gush.

Regarding Jackolski (maybe this  belongs in another thread)— he may in fact have a shot at the NFL. He's a bit undersized for a running back, but his speed (I heard 4.3) and his stats could get him selected...at least on special teams.

Guys, why are we getting so ahead of ourselves. We have the biggest game in the Big South conference season four days away and ya are already talking about next year!! Relax!!! Lets enjoy the moment. lol

I think the time is perfect to make our picks for saturday:

SB 42 - LU 38

GO SEAWOLVES!!!!!

-->

(I've come to the conclusion that in order for this conference to get two bids, every league team will have to face at least two top FCS teams to increase its level of play... or that SB and Liberty both go 9-2 or 8-3 which is unlikely due to the early season guarantee games. SB and LU are quality teams but we need the respect conference-wide in order to justify our at-large berth eligibility)

OK e-, I'll return to the game, but still regarding Jackolski— Last year Liberty stopped kicking to him because he burned them a few times on kickoff/punts...including for a touchdown. It'll be interesting to see if they give him a chance this year, or start off kicking out of bounds from the start.

We do not play Richmond until 2013 and 2014.  The Mystery team is going to be awesome I hear.

Anyway I guess we are making picks now.  I hadn't given the score a lot of thought till now.  I am not sure why everyone feels that the RBs that a lesser LU defense held down pretty well last year are going to go nuts.  Don't forget that LU's run D may be the best you have faced all year based on the stats.  I think they will get some good yards but they will not go as nuts as they have for the last few weeks.  I think this game comes down to us being tight enough in the passing game that you guys have to ruly on the run which we will slow down significantly.  Then it comes down to Mike Brown and company with our Passing offense and Mike Brown and company with our run game.

I think some folks who thought LU would beat SBU a few weeks ago are now reading too much into the last few weeks for both LU and SBU and some are flip flopping.  Liberty was very banged up in those 2 games and played down to their opponets and WON.  SBU was mostly healthy and took care of business handily.  Let's not forget that LU was an all american kicker shy of beating JMU and likely Lehigh.  I believe we have the better all around team as I did at the start of the season.

We are where we thought we would be with both undefeated in conference, and I can't wait for this game!

I say we end up with: Liberty - 42 SBU 28

Honestly. I just threw my score in there. I didn't think much of it. My only requirement was that Stony Brook played out to be the winner. Everything else i skipped! lol

Thats the awesomeness of picks right there!

As you said, it all depends how much LU contains Stony Brook's running offense. Depending how that goes, we might have to use more of our passing game. Even though I like the passing game better than early in the season, much improved, its obvious that relying on the passing game will get us out of comfort zone . For a team that has been running all season long to have to switch up in the last game is not the best that can happen...

Still, Im confident that the outcome will be favorable for Stony Brook and that Liberty wont be as successful as last year defending against this. I can see it in my eyes already as hundreds rush the field after the Big win (similar to sundays Soccer Championship victory) for our Football program. hehehe

Btw, Knucklehead thanks for being here, it adds to the discussion. Makes it more interesting.

Our All-American Kicker has been hurt off and on since the JMU game. Since then we've used our backup kicker for all kickoffs. He doesn't have nearly the leg of Matt Bevins. He generally gets the ball to the 10-15 and to be honest our kickoff coverage has been suspect all year. I really hope we gameplan well for this facet of the game as it could be huge.

Also, our kick returner, Kevin Fogg, leads the country with 3 kickoff returns for touchdowns. Both teams are top 5 in the country in kickoff returns and may be #1 and #2.
