Ten years ago, New York State invested $22 million in building Stony Brook University's LaValle Stadium, Suffolk County's largest outdoor athletic facility. Officials are looking towards a future expansion to the tune of $5.7 million for the stadium that officials hope will take it to an even higher level.

State Sen. Ken LaValle, R-Port Jefferson, said in a recent interview with Patch that the money will allow the existing 8,300-seat stadium to be expanded to seat 10,000. LaValle – who can often be seen wearing a red Stony Brook hat – said there are additional plans to bring the stadium to a seating capacity of 15,000 in the future. It will not only help in recruiting athletic talent, he said, but it will also bring the community on board even more.

"The stadium is first class. ... The students have gotten into the athletic program. It adds to the quality of student life," LaValle said. "The community is into Stony Brook sports."

Gotta love it...hopefully they add some 50 yard line seats on the visitor sideline.

The article said that the new funds would add 2,000 seats. I'm guessing that the red endzone would be were they put the seats. That would give you 10,000 seats and still allow another 2,000 standing room. Total of 12,000, not bad.

The article says the new funds will allow it to expand to 10,000 and with future funds it would expand to 15,000

If you ask me, the 2,000 sounds like they will fill in the seats in the north end zone.  And the expansion to 15,000 would be to add a tier on the west side of the stadium.  Either way, great news.  Probably an indication of football moving onwards and upwards.

From what I understand the new seats will be on the visitors  side and include new restrooms and concession stands. That should make things a little less crowded on the existing facilities. Either way it is good news.

Now that I give it further thought. I think its more beneficial to build out the visitors side first instead of filling out the bowl. If we fill the other endzone you will have atleast 2000 people unable to look at the scoreboard unnecessarily. We'll have a nice "horseshoe" and then go on from there.

Go SEAWOLVES!

Love that it will be on the visitor side...the place needs some more concessions and bathrooms and a swag tent couldn't hurt either.

Keep Chopping SBU!!!

Shuart to host the 2014 lax Qfinals.

Quote
The largest crowds in James M. Shuart Stadium history occurred during the hosting of the NCAA Lacrosse Quarterfinals. A stadium record of 13,447 spectators, the largest-ever lacrosse crowd on Long Island, were in attendance for the 2011 NCAA Quarterfinals, while a crowd of 12,292, a then-NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship Quarterfinal, witnessed the 1999 NCAA Quarterfinals.

Perhaps not for long...

This is why Albany fans hate us. Because we have Newsday and Senator LaValle pushing our case while they have the TimesUnion backing Siena instead of Ualbany.

Expansion is going to happen sooner than later so I'm not too worried about it. We'll get it. Priority should be expanding the fan base and getting the alumni involved.

Meanwhile, the Haters:
