Warney in Vegas

6.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in 16.5 minutes per game to this point. And he's knocking down free throws!

Yet the commentators were constantly saying he is undersized for the PF position. He might be undersized, but he can still score and is a great defender. Warney can make big$ in the Asian league, but I think the D league is where he belongs and will get better NBA exposure, but make much less $$$.. The European league is good time but pay less.. Lets see how this pans out for him. Either way, he will still make a very good living playing BB regardless where he lands..

It is my understanding the Asian basketball league pays very well. There are no guarantees going to the Mavs camp and the pay is virtually nothing, however it's possibly the gateway to the NBA starting job someday..

Here is an example of what the Mavs pay for a partial guarantee contract.. If Warney gets invited to camp with no contract he would make substantially less money .

oh wow.  what a showing.  great news for the U.

over the last 6 years, we've had athletes like Crowley, LVD, Jankowski, Tye, and now Warney representing SB very well over very many sports.

Nardone: Mavericks getting a steal in Jameel Warney

Without purposely attempting to be hyperbolic, the Dallas Mavericks signing Jameel Warney is the steal of the century. It rivals…no…it surpasses the “Havlicek steals the ball!” on the all-time steals list in the history of the sport.

Warney, who is an undersized big man at 6’8″, has an uncanny ability to rebound the basketball, block shots and score buckets at an efficient rate without needing the offense to run through him.

Then again, he’s more polished on the offensive end than given credit for. He has good footwork underneath the basket, regularly finds space in the floor in which he can operate, and his ability to find the basketball coming off the rim is patently absurd.

However one values offensive rebounds, knowing that he grabbed 39 total rebounds during the Summer League, with 27 of those being offensive, helps bring his nose for the basketball on the offensive end to the forefront. He will, or at least should, help create second opportunities for teams when they would otherwise not get them.

Oh, and it is also worth noting that Dallas never ran offense through him, yet he still shot 60 percent from the field, and in the only two games that he saw over 20 minutes in, Warney averaged 10 points and 10 rebounds (16 of the 20 rebounds were of the offensive variety).

While certainly not a given, there’s little reason to think that he will fail to evolve into a bruiser big/decent jumper hybrid. Considering he brings such impacting skills (rebounding, blocks) to the table as is, he only needs to become a competent jump-shooter to find himself a home in the league. Moreover, if he does become the sort of player who can hit a jumper with semi-regular consistency, we are now less talking about Warney as a fringe NBA player and more so in context of being — NO HYPERBOLE — an NBA starter.

I think a lot of this is spot-on.  you can tell the writer has seen jameel play instead of just looking at stats, summer league, and video.

I loved very little about the NCAA Tournament game, but of the things I did, that Warney was able to put up 23 and 15 on motor alone, despite clearly being the best/only offensive threat against a long Kentucky team, was at the top. We saw it a lot here, but to see it against UK suggested he had a shot at the next level. He'll never have offense run through him but somehow he'll make his presence known. We'll see what he can do against NBA regulars.

Missing out on marquee names like Mike Conley and Hassan Whiteside early in free agency, the Dallas front office quickly rebounded by working out a trade to acquire Bogut from the Golden State Warriors. The Mavs then inked Barnes, 24, to a reported four-year deal worth $94 million, adding another starter from the Warriors’ 2015 NBA championship team and 73-win squad last season. Meanwhile, the Mavs got younger by signing third-year big man Dwight Powell and adding the likes of a 26-year-old Curry, big man Quincy Acy, Argentine swingman Nicolas Brussino, summer-league standout Jonathan Gibson, BYU product Kyle Collinsworth, forward Dorian Finney-Smith, undrafted LSU guard Keith Hornsby and post player Jameel Warney to round out the roster. Now, Matthews says he will ensure that the Mavs play with a chip on their shoulders and relish taking on an underdog role.
