The Stony Brook University Arena is the 4,000+ seat arena home to Seawolves Men's and Women's basketball constructed in the early 1990's anticipating the rise of Stony Brook Athletics to Division I. Since the 2007 season it has been not been used and its currently under a $20 million dollar renovation. The funds are frozen by the state government and currently awaiting release for the continuation of the renovations.

Insideman, I was wondering if there was anything we the fans could do to accelerate this process? Should we be writing and calling our local state senators and assemblyman asking them to unfreeze the money? I'd like to help if I could.

A rumor that it might be functional by next season (2012-13). I dont know how trustable the source is but I'm still hopeful. By functional I dont mean renovated. Renovations will come after the 2012-13 season according to the source.

I have definitely been getting the impression that it will be coming soon.

Do you have any more information as to what the difference between functional and renovated would mean? The arena should currently still be functional now. Does functional mean they'll have games in there before the renovation is technically complete?

By functional it meant that they will play the games for the 2012-13 season there with the current state of the arena and then start renovations after that season.

I'm in doubt as to why would they play there next year and then start renovations instead of starting renovations asap and continue playing in the Pritchard, but again, I'm not sure how much I can trust the source. He told me news will be come out soon, I'm still waiting...

If true, it's interesting that they would move back to the arena full time before renovations. They set a record for season ticket holders this year-maybe they think there is enough demand to warrant moving to the larger arena? It would be somewhat ridiculous in my opinion to move back to the unrenovated arena if they're not drawing over 2k fans per game. Way better to play in a sold out pritchard than a more than half empty arena.

Taken from the Statesman release this monday November 7th:

"Anyone hanging around the Sport complex is used to seeing an abandoned-looking facility with dim lighting and rows of bleachers stacked up on the side. The Stony Brook University arena, which has been technically closed for more than three years, might be coming back to life at last"

"The funding for the 4,000 seat arena renovation has finally been approved, but Stony Brook is currently taking care contracting rules before construction bidding begins, university officials said"

"In her most recent facilities report, vice president for Facilities and Services Barbara Chernow announced the approval of the funding, saying the project would 'reconfigure the layout of the arena, and add lighting and air conditioning'"

HUGE NEWS FOR THE STONY BROOK SEAWOLVES. JUST WHAT WE ASKED FOR!!!!!

Okay, what exactly does this mean?  Has there been anything else mentioned since the article in regards to timeline?  Reading between the lines, it seems that you guys are looking at playing in your regular gym next year, and then moving into the arena 2013-14, while keeping option open to use it this year if the team hosts the Championship Game of the AE tourney....am I close?

According to WUSB.FM in the Sports Section by Matt tonight the Stony Brook University Arena is set to start construction as soon as the Recreation Center is complete, hoping that the Recreation Center is complete by Summer 2012. This makes a lot of sense because the arena is currently being used for recreation for the undergraduates (I have played some basketball at the arena before). This is coming soon. We need it badly if we want to continue the trend that we are a program on the rise...

Hopefully that report isn't just a rumor. If the problem was that the state legislature was holding up funds, you would think the big news would be that the funds were released. I haven't heard that yet.

The funds were released already. Not frozen anymore. The Statesman released an article a while ago saying the money was available (Post #6 above).  Matt sort of confirms that the Arena renovations will be starting up soon

Quite frankly, I'm surprised at how little excitement this announcement has seemed to generate among you guys.  I don't even go to the school and I'm excited for you!  I have been reading all the conjecture about a possible CAA move, but I see basically no SB talk on the AE forum.  I must admit that it's almost over-run with UVM fans, so I understand if you guys don't want to post there, but the lack of chatter on your own site is surprising.....from an outsiders perspective, from what I've read and seen on your web site, this place looks really nice.  My question is what do you guys do for the next two years if you get a chance to host the AE title game again?  Where do you play the game?  At any rate, congrats on the arena.  My guess is that you are in the CAA within 2 years for football, and all sports within 4.

Always good to hear from you Quickdraw. We appreciate your fresh perspective. If/when SB hosts the next two title games, the university will have to rent another arena on Long Island. Don't see how they can have the new arena undergoing renovation and still dress it up for a game as they have recently.

More on the CAA positioning...
