"#5. Stony Brook– DARK HORSE

Year 3 under Jeff Boals feels like a big one, as the Seawolves look to rebound from a down 2017-18 campaign. At the top of the list of priorities is improving an anemic offense– SBU shot an ugly 42% from the field and 33% from downtown last season. Junior Akwasi Yeboah is a proven scorer who scores it at all 3 levels, but help around him is necessary. Perhaps a big jump is in store for sophomore wing Elijah Olaniyi, a tenacious defender who showed flashes on offense last season. Meanwhile, freshman Miles Latimer has gotten high marks from multiple talent evaluators, and he comes from a pair of excellent programs in Paul VI and Team Takeover. Where there shouldn’t be any question is the defense, as an already-stout unit adds gigantic JUCO big Jeffery Otchere, an elite rim protector who should anchor the post."

Certainly a fair and tempered view of the upcoming season.  Glad he mentioned our big 2 acquisitions.  Lots of youth in this league.  With the exception of Hartford, not sure how any team can be gauged yet this early on.

If I was just looking at returnees, experience, last year's record, etc., I'd probably have us around here also. In order to be better than this and to compete for a conference title, we will need *significant* contributions from our newcomers.

Quote
America East preseason power rankings: Vermont is still on top, but Hartford can break through

Like Lamb, the Duncans will face more pressure with the graduation of five of the eight players who appeared in that infamous (for Vermont) UMBC game in March:

But John Becker brought in a heralded recruiting class that will be tested against the likes of Kansas and Louisville in November.

With a new contract in his pocket, John Gallagher is pushing most of his chips into the center of the table this season. Center Hassan Attia graduated, but four starters return and all are seniors

It’s been a bit of a rocky learning curve for now-third-year head coach Jeff Boals. Last year’s squad was abysmal offensively, finishing 301st nationally in eFG% (47.9%) and 306th in three-point shooting (30.2%).

The Great Danes will have to lean on their lone returning starter, Devonte Campbell, and hope the freshman class, UMass graduate transfer Rayshawn Miller, and Seton Hall transfer Philip Flory can get up to speed quickly.

I dunno, not much gleaned from that chart.  With exception of Akwasi, this is first year that the team is truly Boals' team.  To me, the jury is still out on our coach, and a lot is riding on his recruitment leading into this season.  Cautiously optimistic.

As an aside, not sure how Vermont is getting all the pre-season love, unless it's based on legacy, and same with Albany, who was decimated with graduations and transfers.

P.S.  I really thought Lamb was a flight risk this season; surprised to still see him around.  Maybe the injury squashed his marketability to move to a higher-level program.

Have some intel on yesterday's Scrammage against FDU (Picked to finish 2nd in the NEC this year). A More experienced squad than us to begin with. We won. Largest lead was 14 in our favor.Cornish played really well again. Kwasi went for 30. The newcomers expected to be depended on, showed flashes of brilliance.
Seawolves Really ate on the glass. We out rebounded them 50-23.

Negative take away was we got careless with the ball late and turned it over.

I pictured Cornish as the first guy off the bench (and occasional closer), for his scoring. I wonder if he'll the the starting PG.

great that cornish has shown more promise and perhaps some leadership.

the bigger news to me is the presence in the paint, which isnt surprising.  we can use this to our advantage- score the easy putbacks, get second  chances on our historically poor perimeter shooting. GO SB
