i agree you need mack out there to distribute and run point, but isnt the outside shooter we've had in the past at the 1.

agreed that olaniyi and yeboah command 30min or over.  we've got a lot of question marks at guard and so maybe it's by committee.  i hear good things about ceesay and latimer but again- unproven at this point.

i havent seen enough garcia so i really cant say where he'll fit in, as a swing.  more likely a 3 to me, possibly a 4 if we play small.

with that said, i dont see why you keep all the height on the bench- why not have christie, ochefu, or otchere on the floor- for presence, blocks, rebounds, stretching the floor, putbacks, etc.

also, i keep thinking we may be like the last two years where we run nearly two full lines.  not a bad thing.  with this depth, we should try to run teams into the ground, especially teams that like to play 7-8 players (i said this last season).

I have no idea what these guys look like at this point, but I'm guessing that any 7-footer who comes to the America East is a project, so probably limited minutes for Christie. I mean, are we sure he's better than Alonzo Campbell? I could see Ochefu and Otchere splitting the game, with Christie giving them a breather when needed. Again, just speculation.

Alonzo Campbell was not given a chance to excel. Petras was always the golden boy. What little we saw of Campbell he clearly was the better rim protector than Petras. He was just raw, as any 7' would be in the AE.

Look at Campbell numbers. His numbers are better all around...

Junior College Ball is the equivalent of mediocre high school ball.  Those are horrible stats! Less than a block a game!  They didn’t even play the varsity team at Bacone College, but their JV team! Raw meaning he’ll never even be mediocre.

If you think MacKenzie should be the starting PG then you’re saying Stony Brook won’t be the AE Champ! It’s amazing how far our expectations have been lowered for the PG position.  I have no faith in the 21 year old sophomore who doesn’t have the speed or shooting, which I guess can only get better.  He should only be playing at most, 8 minutes a game!  Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s playing somewhere else next season.  I was right about Campbell and Almonacy leaving over the last couple of years.

Campbell and Almonacy barely saw the floor, Almonacy in part because he was behind McKenzie. McKenzie started 17 games as a freshmen and, given the foot/ankle surgery he underwent in the offseason, was presumably playing through an injury last year. He doesn't have a very high ceiling, but he'll be surrounded by guys that do. Granted, he needs to be able to hit open threes, but that's definitely an area that you can improve in. If he can get to be a decent 3 point shooter, I think he's a really solid option at pg.

McKenzie starting at PG and playing 20-25 mins isn't a bad idea. There will be more than enough talent for him to give the ball to for scoring opportunities. We simply need him to have a steady hand, not turn the ball over and distribute. He may not be a defensive pest but if he's just contains defensively, he'll send players into help defense of guys like Olaniyi,Otchere,Ochefu.
He's shown he can do these things somewhat  as a Frosh. Now with experience and better talent around him. I think he will be very solid.

to the extent you consider mack to not be the 3 point shooter that puriefoy or woody was, i think this could be a good thing.  we should take less threes and work the ball inside.  especially considering what i think will be a size and muscle advantage in the paint.

We've talked about this before but ... I don't suspect this will happen. Guys going to the rim and dropping it to a big? Maybe. The bigs cleaning up everybody else's mess on the glass? Sure. But I just don't see us feeding the post as I don't believe we're limited in the way of back-to-the-basket offensive talent. Of course, we're talking about three guys with three or more years of eligibility so they could be in the gym every day working on their offensive arsenal.

Very high on team expectations, but seeing is believing, so I'm tempering my enthusiasm somewhat.

Unlike some, not very high on McKenzie.  Things I didn't like about him last year were his below-average quickness, and his propensity to look at the ball too much while dribbling and getting his pocket picked.  Comparing to him to a guy like Dougher as a freshman, I think he's well behind in development, and remember he had that extra prep year to boot.  Still, I'll be rooting for him, if he gets the nod.

Big keys to this season will be the expected high play of Yeboah and Olaniyi, and their ability to stay out of foul trouble.  Both had this nagging problem last year, and when they weren't on the court, the team just wasn't the same.

Looking forward to seeing Latimer and Otchere impact the team immediately too.
How old a Seawolf am I? I followed them during their Final 4 DIII hoops run in 1977-78 (they were called the Patriots then)

Re: McKenzie, I don't think anyone thinks he's this star now or that he'll ever become one. I think third team all conference is within reach over the course of his career, maybe second if he really develops. I'm not "high on" McKenzie but I'm comfortable with him – good passer, takes care of the ball, runs the offense. Could do worse, could do better. The question remains whether Latimer or Ceesay can supplant him and, if they can, when.

Mckenzie led the America East in assist to turnover ratio last season. Playing on one leg basically. Shooting was affected greatly because had very little stability on left leg. Had major ankle surgery after season and is healthier now.  By the way even with hurt ankle was second fastest player on team last season. Ankle was taped in such a way all season that he could not jump - could run fine, just not jump.

I was overall impressed with Mckenzie and thought he improved as the year went on. I think he has range from three and this year will make teams think twice about leaving him open on the perimeter.

yep.

i also think, since bball is a team sport, with a true presence inside (ochefu, yeb, otchere, and christie) we will open up more time/room for perimeter shots.  and, second chances.

i have to think- who in the AE gives us problems size-wise, vermont?  with leissner graduated and UA having some losses, we should have a size advantage.

I'll admit I'm not as knowledgable or engaged on the basketball side as I am the football side, but after our struggles last year, I'm glad we're looking good this off-season and are building hype for an AE title run. We need another one and more importantly another NCAA tournament appearance.
