Thank you Redwyn for making this topic a closed topic.. Even though I am a little disappointment, you most likely are correct about fundings  for a Div1 Hockey team.. Hockey is a expensive sport and a school like SBU just does not have the funding and backing to even consider taking on a major sport like Hockey.... I actually asked Senator Lavalle tonight at the game if it would be possible to getting funding for a Hockey Arena and even though he loves hockey,  it's highly unlikely, in a roundabout way....

Nothing to be ashamed about on our end - simply put, if Syracuse can't field a M Ice Hockey team, we're not going to either.

As for the football stadium - my sources tell me that the money is locked, it's an attendance issue. Fact is, we can't regularly fill an 8500K stadium besides maybe our opener and homecoming. We still bring in D2 schools because we're stuck in that no-man's land between mid-level performance and poor attendance/low guarantees. No one wants to see us in the hollow confines of a 15000K facility if we can only put 5K into it. Remember, 15K is an FBS minimum - and that's 15K turnout, not capacity. We're gonna need to get that thing to its maximum at roughly 25K or so to be a reasonable candidate. The MAC will welcome us as the first TRUE NYC media-market FBS team with open arms when we're ready and U Mass advances to the AAC. But I'm in no rush to see that happen - gimme a few CAA titles and playoff wins first.

Ditto..

may I add that also want see a couple of trips to the NCAA tourney! Really want this monkey off the back. Hope boys get it done this year..

Stony Brook Hockey just won the ESCHL championship game, ( equivalent to winning the AE conference ) and now travels to Delaware for the national Championship series!

These guys are good real good and could compete in the NCAA Div1 league!!!

Great job to them. ESCHL is competitive...but not D1 level by a margin. Penn State learning that now after moving up - and Big10 definitely not Hockey East or even ECAC level this year http://www.gopsusports.com/sports/m-hockey/sched/psu-m-hockey-sched.html

Any long term winning by a club program is always impressive though. What always blew me away about SBU Hockey was the consistency of its administration, and the foresight to involve alumni early and often. The input from professionals improves donation and streamlines administration that a group of 19 year olds simply can't provide. Men's Rugby recently embraced this and has made INCREDIBLE progress in the past few years. Hopefully we see SBU embrace the Hockey/Rugby model and advance to a formal "club varsity" status, where the university directly participates in the management of its marquee club sports (Ice Hockey, Rugby, Crew, Fencing) - a model pioneered by Greg Hartsuff at U Michigan Crew. Kudos to maturity prevailing in college club varsity sports.

I was reading rumors on twitter last month that there is a possibility that Hofstra and SBU will play each other again regularly and perhaps as soon as next year's OOC basketball. I really hope that is the case. Would be great for LI college sports.

Has anyone else heard anything?

SBU and Hofstra   play this spring in softball. So maybe  truth to what you have heard- basketball and lacrosse for both ladies and  men  would be good matchups.

Don't you think that it's about time the men's basketball team photo on the athletics website is updated?  It's a little embarassing to still have the official picture on the MBB tab representing the team from two years ago (i.e. Brenton, Hayes, Coley (with dreds), Bracey, Rouse, etc.)!!

Says a lot, I think, about the quality of our U.S. college athletes vs. the pros in other places.  We sometimes don't appreciate our own.  Couple this with what Dougher has been able to accomplish in Australia,...and WOW!!
