I, too, don’t think there was a religious angle to it. Otherwise the so called Catholic 7s wouldn’t invite Butler which is a non-religious institution. The goal was to recruit basketball only schools with dedication to that sport only... therefore added Butler, Xavier and Creighton. Now added UConn who eventually realized what’s important and priority to them.
