Predictions for SBU America East Awards
« on: February 28, 2019, 10:17:45 am »
I know we have 2 games left to go in the season, but thought we could post our thoughts on who will be represented by SBU at the annual AE awards dinner at this juncture.  Here are my predictions:

Coach of the Year
Coach Boals will get it IMO, ONLY IF we sweep the last 2 games, and get # 1 seed; otherwise, probably Becker or Odom.  Regardless, he should get some votes here.

All-Rookie Team
Miles Latimer

All Defensive Team
Elijah Olaniyi

1ST Team America East
Akwasi Yeboah

2ND team America East
Elijah Olaniyi

3RD team America East
Andrew Garcia - Only thing that could prevent this is the fact that he's not a starter, and has fewer minutes than a lot of other candidates.  But IMO, he deserves it.

looks good.

i'd add to the first team- lamb, lutete, healy, ernie?

second- maybe sherburne, sessoms, blagojevic?

third- lynch/carroll, stewart, clark, cornish, smith?

Since you brought it up, I like most of your other picks. Definitely Lamb and Ernie Duncan on 1st team, along with Lutete.  I'd put Healy on All-Rookie and 2nd team, and I might even put Lynch on 1st team.

2nd team, definitely Sherburne.  Sessoms (All-Rookie) but I think he shoots too much to be deserving of 1st - maybe 3rd team IMO.

3rd team Carroll yes, Stewart yes, Clark yes, Smith I'd leave off (I liked him early on, but doesn't impress me lately).  I'd add KJ Jackson and Dunne.   Cornish may get some votes; for me, too many inconsistent games during the year, but that's just me.  i'd be happy if he got it though.

good point on smith- AE play is what matters here- so early on doesnt have the same impact (if at all).

bingo might get sessoms on the 3rd for no other reason than poor record.

blagojevic could go first in place of healy, he's everywhere.  im sure im missing some names...

Yes, Blagojevic, he's deserving.  How about Andrew Fleming - he had a decent year, and we need to show him a little love after the incident the other night?  Also, maybe Lamar on UMBC?

Solid picks.  Just think you're showing too much love for Sessoms and Healy (the Freshmen!).

No takers for Garcia yet, I see.  If there was a 6th man award, he'd be a shoe-in.

yeah.  its just too many teams and players to see them all play- so i likely missed one or two...

I feel pretty good about the first team. The second and third teams are interchangeable. Fair point on the freshmen. Last year, no freshman appeared on any of the all-conference teams. Granted, nobody was top five in scoring like Sessoms and Healy are. Lamb made the second team the year before, and Leissner and Thomas were all-conference in 2014-15. So there's some precedent for it, and it would be wrong to snub them all together based on what class they're in.

No, you are right, class should not determine awards, even though the voting probably gives advantage to upper classmen, in close cases.

Sessoms has not impressed me at all - I've watched him maybe 5-6 games this year.   I think he over-shoots and is a bit of a ball hog.  However, I went on the AE site, and to my amazement, he's shooting 46% from the field and 38% from 3-land; both solid #'s.  So maybe I didn't catch him at his best.  Also, he's 4th in the league in Assists (but 10th in Assist/Turnover Ratio).  Given those overall #'s, he's deserving of at least 3rd team.

Healy, although averaging 16.6 PPG, is only shooting 42% from the field but 41% from 3.  He shoots 89% from the line, so he definitely adds some PPG that way.  He torched us last game, but haven't seen enough of him this year to convince me that he's Top 15 in the league.

It's hard to make judgements overall, when I've only seen some players twice all year.  Good discussion though.

I'll make a pitch for Otchere for all-defensive team with this:

First, Olaniyi is a straight-up stud when it comes to getting out and guarding a guy in a traditional, individual manner. Simply put, you put him on the opponent's best player and you're in pretty good hands for the night. I also think he deserves the nod for defense.

On paper Otchere no doubt looks like a one-trick pony with blocks, and maybe that's enough for consideration too. But to add (and admittedly I've missed a lot of games live this season, although I did see UMBC) what doesn't show up on stats is the profound impact he has on the game. How many opposing players alter and miss shots or simply don't take them while he's down there? I saw a lot of that in the UMBC game. It's a big part of why, as a team, SBU is ranked high nationally for defense. Frankly, since watching a lot of SBU and AE games since the mid-90s I cannot recall too many or maybe even any players who have had that much impact in a broad sense on defense (simply impacting/altering what opponents do in ways that don't show up in stats). Warner did, although if Otchere sticks around for two more years I have a sense he will surpass Warney in terms of that impact over time.

On the other hand I know he's been wildly inconsistent this year, and you cannot ignore that with his regular foul trouble and time on the bench there are big stretches of time when he's not on the floor.

Hey Fred, I get where you’re coming from. IMO, Jeff is a project and has potential to become an all-world defender. Way too inconsistent, and has major trouble staying on the court. Although he leads the league in blocks, I believe he leads league in fouls too (or at least fouls/minute). Although he shows pockets of promise and can be a force, he needs to learn how to use his talents and stay on the court. I’m optimistic that he can get there. I do understand your argument though.

Perhaps I don't understand the voting, but how does Big Jeff not make the all defensive team for the AE?? As mentioned, he has a greater impact on the game than arguably anyone else on our roster (save for maybe a healthy Yeboah).
