Game 14 - SBU @ Virginia Commonwealth - SNY
« on: June 20, 2013, 12:35:38 pm »
Jon Rothstein and Steve Pikiell have both stated that Stony Brook will be coming to VCU this fall in men's basketball. I just wanted to welcome any SB fans that are making the trek down to Richmond for the game and answer any questions you may have about the team. You guys had a great team last year and although Tommy Brenton is gone, still return a lot and should be plenty good again this season. I'm excited for the match-up! Warney in particular I think can make a nice jump and should introduce himself to the country next season as a bona fide mid-major star. There is also a VCU-Stony Brook connection player-wise. Anthony Jackson was a high school teammate in the same class with VCU senior guard Rob Brandenberg at Gahanna Lincoln in Ohio. I'm sure both of them are going to love the opportunity to play each other!

I think it's really cool that Stony Brook led the nation in road wins last year and that's extremely impressive. VCU should be a good test of the Seawolves' road toughness as we have the 12th home highest winning percentage in the country at the D1 level. We're going to get to see what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object!

It has all the makings of a great game. Here's to a clean, well-played game with no injuries for either side!

Hi dballer, I live and work down here in Chester VA so there will be at least one Seawolf in attendance. Welcome to the board.

I'm definitely going to try and make it down from Baltimore. I was almost going to be at VCU this fall for pharmacy school but I will be in Baltimore in stead. It should be a good game. It would have been nice to see it played with Tommy Brenton.

Very cool!

Yes, I'm sure having the national DPOY in Brenton would have helped Stony Brook, but you guys have plenty coming back. I have to think you guys are likely favored in America East or close to it this season.

I also forgot yet another Stony Brook-VCU connection as SB freshman Ryan Burnett  is from the city of Richmond and actually was high school teammates with one of our freshmen Jordan Burgess at Benedictine Prep. It will be both a homecoming for Burnett and a reunion of sorts between him and Burgess.

Lots of common ties in this match-up!

Very cool link. Thanks! Hard not to be impressed with the job Pikiell is doing there. New arena renderings look great too!

For those that are interested in VCU, here's an overview of last season:

It gives you a good overview of our style, home atmosphere, and the personnel. We return 4 of our top 5 scorers back so it will be very similar for our game from a style of play and personnel standpoint.

Our only common opponent last season was UMass who we played twice (86-68 at home and 71-62 in the conference tourney). Of course the transitive property really doesn't communicate much about our match-up, but its the only common data point we have.

If you have any other questions, feel free to shoot 'em!

Cool Video dballer. On this board, we've had may discussions about Stony Brook Basketball moving on to a bigger, stronger conference and the overall opinions have been mixed.. Some fans think we should stay in the AE and be the top dog, I for one disagree. I think SB should move to the A10 for many reasons. One of the top reason is recruitment. A10 is a respectable conference for Basketball and would be perfect fir for us. .. How do you feel about SB Basketball playing in the A10??

I do think Stony Brook has upward mobility potential. I thought given Stony Brook's football program the CAA would be ideal in the interim before moving to a FBS league like the MAC.

The rumor has been that Stu Rabinowitz at Hofstra has been blocking Stony Brook as an all-sports addition to the CAA which is unfortunate. America East to the CAA is a jump that has been done several times before with schools like Towson, Delaware, Hofstra, and Northeastern all former members who made the jump. It would make sense as a logical next step for Stony Brook as well.

I don't know that I've ever heard of an America East school jumping up immediately to the A-10. That's a huge jump in men's basketball although admittedly not so much in many other sports. The A-10 is a basketball league through and through. That's another consideration. For example SB making the College World Series in baseball was a big deal, the A-10 is pretty bad in that sport. The CAA is a lot better. As an all-sports league, the CAA is actually much more well-rounded and has a very, very strong FCS product whereas the A-10 has no football league at all.

Stony Brook's AAU affiliation is also very impressive and will add academic prestige to any conference it joins. To be honest the CAA has a better level of academic membership than that of the A-10 as well. That's something to consider for any school president.

The A-10 is for schools that are singularly focused on men's basketball. That's what our administration is committed to and we do it very well. UMass is an exception with FBS football, and it makes them a bit of a flight risk. For that reason I think the A-10 will be extremely wary of adding Stony Brook. Temple was a long time A-10 standard-bearer but FBS football ultimately led to their departure.

Football vs. Basketball has been a real part of conference realignment and every conference is trying to build stability through any additions they make. As a basketball conference, the A-10 has been largely insulated from realignment since most shifts in the past have occurred due to football allegiances dictating where schools go. With the Big East now being another basketball-only league, that changed last year. That said, the attrition with basketball schools will be limited due to having less basketball conferences out there and the A-10 being near the top in the category.

To be honest I see schools like Siena or Charleston more likely due to the fact that they are committed to basketball only and present more stable additions who will stick around. That's my honest take on it.

I do think the best conference for Stony Brook is an all-sports conference in the CAA to build their FCS product before eventually moving on to an all-sports FBS conference like the MAC. I'm certain this is where Fiore eventually wants the school's AD if he's being honest. The A-10 can't provide that so I can't imagine we'd entertain Stony Brook seriously. That's not an indictment of Stony Brook by any means, it's just a bad fit because we want different things.

Very thorough explanation on that topic and you hit the nail on the head. The Hofstra president is really putting the screws into us and I think something needs to be done about that. I don't know if SB has any recourse though because it's my understanding, a couple of other schools are going along with Rabinowitz and that's a shame...

The CAA would be a perfect fit for ALL of our Div1 sports program. I don't like the idea we have Football in the CAA and everything else in the AE. The AE was very good to SB but, I feel they have outgrown that conference and are ready to move up and prepare for bigger challenges..

I have a feeling SB is stuck where we are for the foreseeable future but, some people are ok with that because we are the 700 pound Gorilla in the conference. I think in order to be bigger and better we need play stronger teams and move up to a more respectable conference, and the A10 is one of them, for Basketball at least !!!

No doubt, but much like you didn't like being in the CAA for football and AE for everything else, you'd be in the exact same position if you joined the A-10 with football in another league.

As realignment has shown time and time again, football is king when it comes to making conference decisions. This makes Stony Brook a volatile add for any hoops conference, and the A-10 is certainly that.

I think everyone knows Stony Brook would only be using the A-10 to improve basketball and as a stepping stone to a FBS league since it's central program involves a sport the A-10 does not offer. SB's AD knows a hoops league is not the end-goal and so does the A-10's administration.

For that reason it's a non-starter and unlikely to happen. Basketball schools will be on the candidate list if the A-10 ever needs to add members and Stony Brook can't realistically call themselves that. That's not a bad thing, it's just reality. Football offers a much higher ceiling revenue wise with many more destination options so Stony Brook is hardly in a bad place if they keep growing your program.

The A-10 has football playing members (UMass in the MAC, Rhode Island and Richmond in the CAA). The difference is neither URI or UR have any FBS aspirations, and we know the minute UMass gets an offer from a higher league than the MAC they are gone. For Stony Brook it's clear they're more like UMass than URI or Richmond. That makes you a bad fit for the A-10.

VCU is going   to be a very good  test for us  and a high point on our schedule this up coming season.  We played well last year against some major  teams namely  UConn , Maryland and Seton Hall. I see VCU  on a par with those programs  so it should be interesting.

http://www.ncaa.com/rankings/basketball-men/d1/ncaa_mens_basketball_rpi

VCU: 26 RPI, NCAA 5-seed went to the 3rd round , finished #23 in the country

UConn: 47 RPI, no postseason, unranked (no votes)
Maryland: 62 RPI, NIT 2-seed went to the NIT semifinals, unranked (no votes)
Seton Hall: 133 RPI, no postseason, unranked (no votes)

I'm obviously biased, but I think we were a cut above those squads. I think the numbers support that as well.

That's the beauty of college basketball and the NCAA tournament. Anybody can beat anybody on a given night. All you need is a great coach and an administration that backs your program.

Stony Brook has both. You all have a bright future.

if we can also get a bit of luck our way it would be great. we have the support system in place... we just need that recruiting class that gets us there... something like seawolves baseball in the college world series... for now we'll just keep waiting... and hopefully we are the next VCU on the waiting list to shine!  ;)
