Looking ahead to 2022-23
« on: March 02, 2022, 02:58:32 pm »
With Policelli hurt and Roberts all but declaring himself done, I think we can safely say that we won't be playing in the postseason. Even if we magically do, we can still look ahead. Let's look at what we have.

G: Clarke, Noll, Stephenson-Moore, Phillip, Onyekonwu, Pettway, Heiden
F: Policelli, Sarvan, Nahar
C: Fitzmorris, Muratori

There are a lot of ifs immediately. Greene should absolutely get looks from power conference schools, although I really hope he stays—such a likable player. I think the CAA's a good spot for TSM and Policelli. We'll see about Roberts, Pettway and the freshmen as far as playing at that level. Roberts looked like an all right backup in his limited time with us.

We need to add size—not just because we'll be green but because of the step up in competition. But still, it's not like the CAA is the land of the giants either. The biggest team in the league (Northeastern) stinks, but the two best—Towson and UNCW—are by no means bludgeoning their opposition with bigs in the paint. So you can survive. But I don't think we can count on Tykei or some other guard leading us with 8 a night because the frontcourts will be more formidable.

The transfer market will again be filled with talent, and we suddenly leapfrog a lot of schools simply based on conference affiliation. Does a LuHi kid like Rafael Pinzon and/or Drissa Traore get restless at St. John's, see an opportunity here and make the jump? As an AE program, no chance, but now I think it's possible (not knowing either kid one bit). Can we be in play for the kind of transfers that Hofstra got, as Ford mentioned in his NJIT presser to end the 2021-22 season? It's all very exciting.

But first we have to know what we have, specifically pertaining to Greene, TSM and Policelli. I would hate to see Kaine Roberts have the most seniority on the team come November. But it is the wild west out there.

Schedule-wise, our first Division I home game was St. John's, and I'd love to see us do everything we can to bring in one stalwart program next year—not Kentucky or Duke, not at UBS Arena or MSG (albeit nice) but on campus so the students and locals can all attend. Again, as an AE program, little to no chance, but possible as part of the CAA. An A-10 school or two would do.

Let's get the hot stove chatter going. We're part of this too. Every good program has a good message board.

G: Greene, Stephenson-Moore, KRoberts, Pettway, Onyekonwu
F: Policelli, Diallo, Nahar
C: Muratori

I'm going to out on a limb and predict that Greene, Policelli, and TSM will all return.  I think Greene will get screwed by AE on All-Teams, and not get the recognition he deserves, and that will hurt his chances of making a big jump, not that he is even considering it.  Policelli had a bounce-back year, and TSM worked hard, kept his mouth shut, and we saw him blossom this year.  Can't see either of them trading what they gained for anything better than the CAA.

With ARoberts looking like he's bolting, gotta wonder if JRod regrets his late season defection.  KRoberts looks like he has some speed, handles the ball pretty well, but his decision-making and shot-making ability will need to improve, if he's even considered to be playing next year.  Granted he's only a freshman, but Geno got to see him a bit this year, and I think his time on the floor will only help him moving forward.

We definitely will need to pick-up a couple of Point Guards, and as you stated, some height.  In our early days of DI (before the transfer portal became commonplace) we went after bigs in Europe.  Might that not be a place to look, now that we're in the top 1/3 of all conferences?

Now I know Muratori is 7'3", but can he play?   What's the word on Nahar, Pettway, and Onyekonwu?  Will any of them crack our lineup next year?  And isn't baby brother Olaniyi committed to us, or is that just a scholarship offer (I believe he's only 5'10")?

Thank you Checkmate. You are simply amazing contributor which adds life to this board everyday. I share your sentiment. We need to work this off-season to make this board better and prepare for the CAA.

I'm looking forward to next season. I haven't had season tickets for basketball. But I'm strongly considering it for next year despite the distance (from Port Morris, Bx) to support the alma mater. Others should consider it too. If the alma mater is to get stronger - it will need more commitment from the fans.

Cheers!

Checkmate good nugget on potential luhi kids who might want to leave would take any guys from that program. TSM, Policelli, Greene solid players maybe they could recruit them.

If we are really going to make an impact we need a new coach. Ford wont be able to hide that 2 of his 3 years players quit on him. The only year they didn't was the first year of Covid.
Heilbron needs to step up, I am tired of hearing we have no money and we have to let the coaches fulfill their contracts. The reason the program has not grown and is not profitable is because of Heilbron. I am sure when he applied for the job he didn't state he will not grow the program financially and we will be mediocre in the largest profitable sports. Time for change from top to bottom.

I don't want Heilbron to get too much credit for moving to the CAA that it extends his leash too long. Getting us to the CAA is NOT the end goal, we still need to perform well enough there so we can eventually keep moving up. I'm tired of him crying poor over every hundred-K amount. The fact that you can't eat a million dollar contract is your own fault for being a bad administrator, dude.

I 2nd, or 3rd, or 4th that.  Big question I have, is will CoB and EcasadoSBU, our board administrators, have enough in the budget to give Checkmate that deserving CAA raise?

As an aside, you know what would be really cool addition, is if CreateAForum.com supported real-time Group Messaging so that we could all chat in real-time during the games, and elevate our blood pressure.  Anyone know if there is some sort of plug-in to do that?

a great idea (not the compensation, the chat function).

we have 15 online right now (logged in) and 352 members, many of which are transient.  i wonder what happens to our #s next year.

either way this thread is a great example of how we want our forum to be.  i hope it doesnt change.

Gentlemen, thank you. This thread was not meant to be about me! But thanks. Being on the beat (of sorts) helps me be a more knowledgeable fan, and I'm glad it has fueled your interest in and conversation about the program. It also whets my appetite to write about sports—no place better than a newsroom. I could do this all day. I was happy to stumble upon this board however many years ago and am happy to pitch in.

Looking ahead, do I know anything whatsoever about places like ELON? That would be no. But we'll (all) get there.

While Geno and Co. do their recruiting, let's do ours too. Can you find one friend to join the board? Contributors are good; readers are good too. There's gotta be more hoops junkies out there.

I really think we can ramp this up even further, especially with our recruiting scope greatly broadening. And dare I say, some day, at-large talk.
