Is it strange that Boals isn't coaching out the rest of the season? Even if they knew Boals was the guy, I would have expected them to wait to announce it until after Stony Brook was eliminated.

At least Pikiell finished the season out, albeit with an NCAA game, not CBI.  But Pikiell did the right thing by heaping praise on SBU and the opportunity he was afforded by them on his way out the door. He even scheduled a home-and-home with Rutgers vs. SBU (not sure if that was part of the buyout agreement or not though).

What did Boals expect, for Heilbron to rollover and double his salary and match OU's offer after an AE QF debacle?  I hope he does the right thing in the next day or 2, and at least tips his cap to SBU.  He owes SBU and its fans that, at minimum.  Although he got us some solid recruits, let's not forget that he was handed Akwasi and Garcia.

P.S. EDIT: Looking at Boals' Twitter account (freshly updated within the last hour), he could show a little more class by being a little more subtle until the news has sunk in for a few days.  SBU athletic administration aside, how do you think the SBU players feel, a day after finding out, with Boals pimping his "OU" brand all over the place?

P.P.S. EDIT: Did happen to catch a whiff of his OU press conference today, and he did thank Stanley and Heilbron for the opportunity, and said that it was tough telling his players that he was leaving.

This stuff always goes on at good mid-major programs. It’s happened to you guys twice. The guy has Ohio roots and he will probably get much more money in the process. You shouldn’t blame him for seeking a better opportunity. We all would. Go get an up and coming assistant from the Duke/Carolina or other high major coaching tree who’s looking at Stony Brook as his chance to prove himself...take the next step. You guys are going to do just fine.

A couple of things about this:

1. He didn't tank the Bingo game. C'mon. They shot the hell out of the ball and we didn't. And if we play them 10 times, we beat them 9. It just so happened that was the one.

2. I don't think anyone can blame him for taking a job at his alma mater, where he was team captain, in a state he was raised, for more money and a better conference.

3. It's been really fun three years, Coach. It's a shame we didn't get to see this through, because next year and afterwards would have been special.

4. I don't know how you can sell the idea of a third coach in five years to Akwasi and Garcia.

And one last thing: Thank you, Coach.

Any honest person on this board wouldn’t pass up a $100,000 (or was it more?) raise, especially in a lower cost-of-living area. Only a fool would have stayed. The best way out of the team’s seemingly endless cycle of disappointment is a move to a true mid-major conference.

Steveoh, some replies:

1) I don't think anyone accused Boals of "tanking" the game; that is ludicrous.  Personally, I question whether he was fully vested in this game emotionally, knowing that he probably had an offer in the works before the game, and as another poster stated, maybe the players knew about it (?).  Certainly not to take away anything from the way Bing played - but no way you lose a home game like that;

2) Don't blame him at all; most of us would do the same.  I question the quick-getaway, his very minimal tip of the cap to SBU who started his HC career, and his immediate Twitter makeover, allegedly a day after "his kids" found out about him leaving (they are obviously confused and hurting right now);

3)Yeah, it's a shame he didn't finish what he started.  He got 1/2 the way there;

4) Akwasi will walk away, no doubt.  For Garcia to leave, he'd have to sit out a year.  That goes for all the kids on the team;

I think you have to look at it from the career view. Pikiell left for 8 million dollars over 5 years at Rutgers. Boals is probably looking at 2.5 million over 5 at Ohio. At Stony Brook you have the best facilities and largest budget in the AE. It should be easier to build a resume and get the high major money at Stony Brook than Ohio IMO.  Especially considering he's returning all but one player from 24-8 team.

“My dream job was to be the head coach at Ohio University,” Boals said. “Jim (Schaus) and I have a great relationship. We have great dialog. He’s transparent. I know that there are things out there about hard feelings, but it was more disappointed on my end. I completely understand that this is a business. At the time he preferred a head coach, and I wasn’t a head coach. Thankfully I went out and had a great three-year stint at Stony Brook.”

I expect Yeboah to leave, but I think we can hang on to everyone else. Vermont will probably roll everybody next year as usual, but we won't be a bad team by any means.

Definitely agree here. Though he's an Ohio graduate. If it were any other similar school, I think he stays. We really should only be losing coaches to A10 programs or better. I doubt he'd have left to coach at Akron for instance.

If Yeboah leaves this team will be years away from being an NCAA contender. Totally rebuilding again.

Both the MAC East and West are rated higher than the A10 this year.

Yeboah is very good and I definitely hope he stays, but we're very fortunate to also have Garcia who could slide into Yeboah's role quite nicely.

Congratulations to Boals, I cant blame a guy for going and doubling his salary and getting his dream job all in one. As many of you have hinted ,I also do think it could of been handled better. But it is what it is. The media got to the players about Coach Boals moving on, before Boals was able to get to them. That’s the part of collegiate athletics that really sucks. Add to the shock value, that they still had a game to play. This is a real bummer for the kids/student athletes. Really sucks for a kid like Makale Foreman who came here because of his personal connection to Thornton and to play for Boals. The staff can bolt but the kid who served his seasonal sit out penalty is handcuffed here and has no choice but to play for a coach that he has no prior relationship with and wasn’t recruited by.
As far as whether the guys are staying or going, I can say everyone is waiting to see who the new coach will be. They all prefer Geno Ford to be the Head coach but that doesn’t look promising. Some of the players even expressed this to the AD (Yeboah being one of them).I don’t think Ford will be hired though.

Was that before the Binghamton game or USF game?

The players were told before the USF game at a Team meeting on the 17th at 2PM.  What I meant by the media getting to the guys before Boals could. Articles were already circulating and in the hands of the kids before the meeting.
