Im Nervous
« on: January 04, 2013, 05:59:56 pm »
Im not sure how to say this.  The bar has risen so high for SB that anything short of a Tournament Championship will appear to be a massive disappointment.

Articles about how SB is now relevant.  ESPN article on how we are now the favorite to win it all.  Every tv game has announcing crews that gush over ever facet of SB basketball.  All of these massively high expectations after we just graduated out most successful senior class ever.  We are on the verge of breaking into several mid major top 25 polls.  Our RPI is excellent.  This team has had some relative success but hasn't ever made the NCAA's which is really the only measuring point that anyone looks at.

I hope the team is not reading the clippings and thinking, "Yeah, we have arrived."  This team needs to play desperate and with a chip on its shoulders.  Every team in the conference has improved except maybe UMBC.  We need to hold server at home and go at least 4-4 on the road to win the regular season this year.

Again, im not totally sure what my point is except the conference opener has me on edge lol.

If we don't get to the NCAA this year I'm afraid the whole SBU hype will die out... as it should. WE need to make the NCAA if the program wants to back-uo the perception of being on the rise. You could only be "on the rise" for so long before you show real incremental success...and as of now we have yet to show incremental success past regular season championship.

I'd be more confident if they didn't lose to Sacred Heart (now rated around #280) at Pritchard. That tells me anything can happen. I still think SBU is favored to win it all, but not heavily favored yet in my book.  If they win their next six or seven games convincingly, I'll say differently.

I think that anything less than an NCAA tourney berth is a disappointment (Albany and Vermont should say the same thing).

I figure that 13-3 is going to be necessary to win the conference, but it all comes down to one weekend to make the dance.

Regardless, if SBU finishes 21-8 and makes a postseason tourney, that only helps us.

Something we all have to remember, 3 years ago we made the NIT.  It was easily the biggest game in our history, and lots of people were saying that it would never happen again.  Looking back at how much ground we covered in 3 years, just think about what could happen in the next 3.  But there is no shame if our growth slows down, as long as it doesn't stop.

Our biggest problems this season will be Vermont and I suspect Albany. The Great Danes are playing good basketball right now  and will be tough.  But as mentioned it comes  down to that  one weekend in March, we have to get that hump this year.

If you're going to consider Albany and Vermont, you have to add Boston U to the mix. By some measures (KenPom for one), BU is rated way ahead of either Albany or Vermont. Unless SB can start dominating like we expect them to dominate, it will be a four-way race for the championship.

Warney needs to step up to the plate today and start making those easy lay-ups and foul shots if S/B wants to win this game !!

At this point we really shouldn't be saying "if" SB wins the game against UNH. If they don't, it will be time to start thinking ahead to next season.

BU is ineligible for the conference tournament.  It's going to be a three team race - Vermont, Stony Brook and Albany
