General forum talk
« on: March 15, 2022, 04:58:44 pm »
I know this was talked about in another thread, but I did want to open this up to see if anyone had ideas on how to improve it.

This was prompted by looking to see what sentiment was from the Pitt crowd on Noah Collier entering the transfer portal (possible get for us but probably a stretch; he should get looks). https://pittsburgh.forums.rivals.com/forums/basketball-board.26/. You'll note that everything has its own thread – every recruit, every ounce of coach news, former players, former coaches, everything. UMass (http://www.umasshoops.com/newboard/viewforum.php?f=1&sid=6f2933f4b8c641086a815db03353bc63) has a similar format, and it's kinda cool to see the evolution of the talk around certain individuals. KAEO (keep an eye on) so-and-so.

Anything new on the game threads? I think the Yeboah/Olaniyi point watches were fun, but that'll be more difficult as college basketball in general becomes more fluid.

I think we're good as is. Just was curious. I also think that with the lack of major media coverage here, there isn't as much being uncovered/discussed.

Thoughts? This is a good place for them now and always.

i think that with the CAA forthcoming, a lot may look different in the coming year.  perhaps wait a bit and reassess?

we dont exactly have a huge membership here... usually about a dozen online at any given time, and that's really because users stay logged in.  i'd say we usually have 10-15 posts per day (most of which are mine!), unless it's a bball/football game, big event, etc.

we have 350 members:
-but only a few dozen regular contributors
-a chunk who joined when we played for example SHSU in the playoffs, the CWS, etc.
-some parents who hang around for 4 years and then generally exit
-over 100 members don't have a single post
-another 100 have under 10 posts.
There are 29,413,039 corporations in America; but only one Chairman of the Board.

There might also be something in the way that redmen.com use their boards (https://redmen.com/forum/redmentalk.html).

There's categories and then sub-categories. So for example, in Recruiting Central (https://redmen.com/forum/45-recruiting-central.html), it's separated by years, and then threads by players (https://redmen.com/forum/recruiting-2023.html).

And there's general topic threads. We could have a game category and then a Geno Ford category. (jk)

BTW, that whole message board is hilarious. They really think that St. John's is still a premiere basketball program. I was a huge fan growing up in the 80s and 90s, and I still watch them, but the delusion on these threads is next level funny.

Maybe time for a membership drive?   Advertise this board URL on various SM outlets?  I forget precisely how I joined, but I may have stumbled upon it accidentally via a Google search - I was on the AE basketball forum site before that (and have left that board entirely due to the incessant bashing).  This board is far superior and much more friendly, but like CoB said, it's pretty much the same dozen+ posters for the most part.   Moving on up, so maybe a membership drive is in order.
How old a Seawolf am I? I followed them during their Final 4 DIII hoops run in 1977-78 (they were called the Patriots then)

I definitely have been thinking how to make the board better. Right now as it stands we are essentially getting a free service from "createaforum".

I'm trying to figure out what they offer and if I can get our own domain name for a small yearly fee. A friendlier name that makes it more accessible.

Also maybe a nicer color scheme and add banner on the top which shouldn't be too difficult.

We can also modify the forum categories as things have changed dramatically since those categories were created. (i.e: WLAX has become a powerhouse with a loyal fanbase, yet lack visibility here)

I'm happy to chip in with design help on banners or anything like that.
