Game 8: vs. St. Francis (Pa.) 12/2
« on: December 02, 2017, 11:42:07 am »
On the road so I can’t type up anything, but wanted to open this one up for discussion. A nice test. The Red Flash have played well to this point. (edit: got the nickname wrong the first time)

Yea, Checkmate.  I'm a bit concerned about this one.  These guys score a lot of points, and their losses (which were hardly blowouts) were against some fairly hefty competition (St. Mary's, Louisville, etc.)  We beat them last year, but this year looks like it's going to be a lot tougher.

The Red Flash are 3-3 and seem pretty solid . Busy day for Wolfie Sports  between football and Hoops tonight .

From what I gather they are pretty strong in the guard department in terms of scoring, so probably a test for our younger backcourt.

Among the SBU games so far perhaps this is the most even match on paper to date? Hoping for a good show from the home team.

Terrific comeback. I like what I see from Cornish and Olaniyi. SB has four or five guys capable of putting up 15 every night.

Watched this one on ESPN3, and believe me when I say it, we stole this one.  St. Francis is a real good team, and may be the team to beat in the NEC this year along with Monmouth, but they shot unbelievably today from the field, and led the entire way.  A few bad decisions by them down the stretch, gave SBU the chance to comeback.  Yeboah was an offensive force down the stretch under the basket and Cornish was amazing (clutch 3 to tie at 83).  Big win going into their road trip.  Our big problem still is hitting those darn free throws; need to work on those in practice more.

Best game of the season.. Good come back by SB, and yes a little help with with St. Francis going cold the last 50 seconds helps!!

Tale of two halves, and a nice show of determination from SBU to hang in there, stick with the plan, and keep chipping away for a chance at a good outcome. Boy, for St. F, to shoot 15/24 from 3, score 83 pts, and still lose? Ouch!

Great game by all the players mentioned, and no doubt a real confidence-boost game for SBU.

St. F gets to bounce back against Duke on Tuesday...

Great comeback kept everyone standing the last 2 minutes .  Cornish should be our point guard he is fearless anywhere on the court . Yeboah is the team MVP so far he can dominate and take charge .  Win at LIU and Columbia  we should be ok going into Conference play .

Cornish is really exciting. I thought he forced things at times, but some of those plays he made were jaw dropping.

The team still has some things to figure out, but I think they are going to be competing for a conference title come February

If I had to pick a starting  5 going into conference play  it would be Cornish , Olaniyi, Yeboah, Saintel and Sturdivant.   Secunda and UC  off the bench as 6 and 7 .  These guys can score and score quickly . Need a big improvement in free throws  but other than that  solid 7 man rotation .

I think Cornish is the man at point, but I think Olaniyi will be coming off the bench as the energy guy, and will probably be in there at the end of games.  I would venture to say that UC will be starting.  I also think Petras deserves minutes; his hustle, size, and enthusiasm warrant 8-10 minutes per night.  I also think Almonacy has shown some signs of brilliance and deserves 8-10+ minutes per night as well.

I think this will/should be a learning year for McKenzie, Long, and Ochefu on the bench.  The "Chef" is quite young and raw, and although he has an upper-classman body, I  can't see him playing ahead of Petras, based on his appearances to date.

I agree with you on all fronts except with Petras.. He is a senior and still plays like a Freshman and really is a clown on the floor. He's a fan favorite because of his goofiness, just saying.. I still would like to see "Chef" with more playing time and I think he is only a step or two with breaking out of his shell... He could be our other go to big guy. We just dont know because of his very limited time on the floor.

Coach P gave Petras the benefit of the doubt as a freshman when he stepped foot on campus and gave him a lot of playing time and he was horrible to say the least, I do remember that.. I would do the same with Chef. He needs time on that floor to get comfortable.. I feel like Boals is not using him enough off the bench... Of course, it is possible Boals knows something about Chef that we dont know?
