Game 6: SBU v. Princeton
« on: November 29, 2015, 01:52:46 pm »
This will be a good little test for our guys. Princeton is off to a 3-0 start, all against D-I teams, and should move to 4-0 on Monday against FDU. They have a nice road win to their credit already - at Rider. Princeton was picked to finish third in the Ivy but by a narrow margin and they actually tied for the most first-place votes.

Three games so far, three different leading scorers. They BURIED Lafayette this weekend by 52 thanks to 17 made threes on 35 attempts, as well as a 42-24 advantage on the glass.

As predicted, Princeton rolls over FDU, 91-61. Another huge advantage on the glass for the Tigers - 49-30.

Henry Caruso went for 27 and 10, hitting 10 of 11 shots. He's now shooting 74 percent on the year.

Of note:
- All five starters returned from last year's team that finished 16-14, including 9-5 in the conference.
- They've shot nearly 40 percent from 3 through four games. 42 percent of their attempts have come from deep.
- They have a couple trees (both 6-11) who play significant minutes. A good test for Warney.
- Real good backcourt numbers. Amir Bell and Spencer Weisz have combined for 32 assists and just seven turnovers. Weisz played for the U20 Israeli National Team at the FIBA U20 European championships.
- In their two routs, they've outrebounded their opponents 91-54. In their two close wins, 61-61. Get on the glass, boys.
- Lone Long Island connection is freshman G Elias Berbari, who starred at Harborfields and will likely only see time in a blowout.
- Princeton has finished in the top three in the Ivy League in each of the past seven seasons. It made the NCAAs just once in that time, losing to 4 seed Kentucky 59-57 on a last-second shot by Brandon Knight.

Yep, should be. They rained threes on us and we had TWENTY THREE turnovers - that can't happen again and I don't think it will if Woodhouse is a full go. The kid Cook had 28 for Princeton - the most by any Princeton player all season last year. Caruso had yet to emerge as a key cog.

Looking forward to a D1 game at home! Best of luck to SBU. We might get a better look at that debatable bench during this one.

Terrific win. The half court offense looked really good and of course some clutch free throw shooting down the stretch.

Quality team effort. I was surprised that we got into the 90s. Princeton hadn't given up 90 in two years.

Warney was a man among boys. I was surprised by how small the Princeton lineup was most of the team. They had 6-4 Caruso underneath in their 1-3-1 and at one point were, 6-5, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 and 6-1 out there. I don't see how you're going to rebound with that lineup and with Warney and McGrew underneath. When they penetrated, they had no chance against Warney. Career-high eight blocks and we ended up with a 41-28 edge on the glass as a team.

McGrew was tremendous. If he and Sekunda knock down the perimeter shots, we're going to be awfully tough. We're not going to shoot 64 percent every night though.

Not sure where Puriefoy's head was. He was terrible. It's days like today where you're happy you have Woodhouse either in his place or alongside him. We saw a lot of Woodhouse/Puriefoy today.

Nice effort by Nyama and Woodhouse off the bench. Much less Thrower today. I hope he keeps working hard despite the obvious drop in PT that he'll likely see.

It was great to see us weather the early flurry in the second half. The 1-3-1 killed us in the first half but we seemed to figure it out later on. I was surprised by how few screens we saw.

Woodhouse and Walker are huge additions. I prefer Woodhouse at the point and Puriefoy at the "2, esp. " in crunch time.

I think part of the reason the three point percentage was so high today is that the half-court offense ran pretty well. Traditionally a lot of SB's missed three's come off of forced shots as the shot clock is about to expire.  Today, SB managed to get a lot of good looks from the three point line. Hopefully that will be a trend.

Puriefoy was off today, but he helped on the boards, had five assists, and hit two free throws down the stretch. Also, two of his misses were off of drives to the basket that drew defenders that gave way to offensive put backs.

And of course Warney was close to unstoppable. That helps too.

McGrew's mom passed away right before the game against Princeton.

Newsday:

Rayshaun McGrew found triumph in his sea of tragedy on Saturday.

The Stony Brook senior tri-captain got crushing news by telephone only about an hour before the Seawolves’ game against unbeaten Princeton: His mother had passed away. Her fight against breast cancer was over.

The 6-7 swingman was devastated when he told coach Steve Pikiell, but he would not accept his offer to be excused. He found the strength to compose himself and turned in an inspiring 18-point, seven-rebound performance to lead SBU to a 91-77 win before 3,187 at IFCU Arena.

Jameel Warney had 26 points and 15 rebounds for his 12th straight double-double dating to last season. He shot 11-for-14 and added nine blocked shots and five assists. Roland Nyama scored 15 points, all in the second half, and Bryan Sekunda added 12 on four three-pointers as the Seawolves (4-2) won their third straight. Henry Caruso and Devin Cannady scored 16 apiece for the Tigers (4-1).

“My sister actually called me right before the shootaround,” McGrew said. “[Pikiell] asked me if I was still able to play the game, but I didn’t want to let the team down . . . We’d worked hard all week. I didn’t just want to throw it all away and not be able to help my team win. So I played for her.”

Wow. May she rest in peace. I've enjoyed watching her son play ball.

McGrew played a very strong game, which is even more impressive under the circumstances.

Warney was a monster.  He was exhausted by the end of the game, and for very good reason.  He did EVERYTHING.  The most impressive thing he did wasn't even physical.  Puriefoy got called for a touch foul (in fairness, it was a legit foul), and he started to let the frustration get to him.  Warney stepped in and got him out of there before he got t'd and tossed.  That's leadership that doesn't show in the box score, but is really important

This was a great win.  Especially because Princeton plays a very similar game to Vermont.   This is a great sign for the conference season.
