https://stonybrookathletics.com/news/2020/3/9/mens-basketball-basketball-update.aspxThe whole beat-a-team-three-times thing will be tested ... and I've never bought it. I read somewhere that the team that swept the season series has a 72% chance of winning the third game too.
I've said
this two times before – Hartford can be had on the glass. We've been +7 and +9 in our two games. Can we do that again? The problem is that we collected 26 offensive rebounds in our previous two matchups, and that's only translated to 16 second-chance points, which is the same number of points that Hartford has on 11 offensive boards in the two games. Gotta do better than that, boys.
Ellison was very ordinary in our first battle, but he gashed us in the rematch. We have to make life a lot more difficult for him, and I think that's where Elijah comes in. He has the speed and physicality to stay with him. Ellison killed us going downhill and by knocking down seemingly every mid-range jumper he took.
Meanwhile, we were a combined 11 for 56 from deep against Hartford. 11 for 56! That's 19.6%. We've shot it pretty well the last couple games, so here's hoping it continues. We're 17-4 on the year when we shoot 40 percent or better from the field, 3-8 when we don't. If we get three happy, that number can really come down. We're going against the team that was BY FAR the best in defending the three, holding teams to just 25.2% shooting from deep in conference play, ahead of us in second at 29.1%.
While Hartford doesn't really have a Healy who can light us up, they can get a jolt off the bench from guys like DJ Mitchell, Romain Boxus and Michael Dunne. They're all better than 35% from deep. I'm not sure we have that kind of shooting depth.
I'm feeling a lot better about where we are after the last few games. Gueye is really starting to assert himself, and we've seen him dive toward the rim and get the ball delivered to him. Get the defense moving and thinking, guys. Do that and guys will free up, whether cutting in or from the outside. Foreman's shot selection has been better. He's gone to the rack more. Latimer's hit some big shots. And of course Elijah is back.
I don't know about us giving the six, but I like our chances to finally solve Hartford here. But it's mid-week, SBU in the middle of the virus stuff ... hopefully the crowd shows up and does their part.
