Re: Geno, recruiting – an already difficult task in this climate – can't be easy without a guarantee that the coach would be returning the following year. Grad transfers maybe, but what high school senior would be interested in that?

How old a Seawolf am I? I followed them during their Final 4 DIII hoops run in 1977-78 (they were called the Patriots then)

Somebody who's plugged into this stuff said that he heard from a "very good" source that Geno is out.

Meanwhile, Claxton got a well-deserved "multi-year extension" today.

So un-Stony Brook like, but your other point of inability to legitimately recruit as a lame duck coach is certainly valid.  Add to that, Heilbron may be desperately trying to save his own hide (this was discussed in an earlier thread), particularly after the Priore extension blunder.  Also, McGinnis may be more serious about sports than we know, especially with the elevation to the CAA.  If your rumor is true, nice severance package for Geno, for the upcoming year.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I'm all for Will Brown.  He'll fit our budget, local guy who'll be able to tap into the Long Island recruiting market, knows how to win (5 trips to NCAA), and is arrogant enough to turn things around quickly.  How's Albany been doing since they let him go?????

We've been terrible but we're still better than Albany and our coach hasn't been legally charged for assaulting a player (yet).

Not sure if this name has been thrown out there Matt Langel Colgate. He’s been to the tournament 3 times. Patriot to CAA is a step up how much not sure.

I’m also open to a bigger name P5 coach who gets fired to try and turn it around on a smaller level.

That would be even better honestly.

There isn't a lot of info on Patriot League coaches' contracts, and I'm no expert, but Langel just got a really lengthy extension, so he would have to get a big pay hike to account for the presumed kickback for breaching the contract seven years early.

I know we've talked about Grasso, as he's a Long Island guy, but he got an extension recently too. He didn't sound that enthused when he signed it, and maybe a year of driving to Maine and Albany and New Hampshire would tempt him to jump ship. Both guys would have us playing an exciting brand of basketball.

I still think Greg Paulus has the experience and connections to help us make a big leap forward.

A loooot of good assistants out there too.

I just don't want a guy like Boals who was clearly using us as a way to get back to his Alma mater. That 24-7 season was the most magic I've felt post-Pikiell, but then he phoned it in vs Binghamton in the infamous QF.

Problem getting a P5 assistant is that it’ll be another 2 year rental, like Boals, that’ll use us as a stepping stone. Kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place, with limitations of a state school salary.  I say get us a local guy, who has a reach to Long Island high schoolers, and someone who is committed to living here (like Spallina).

Continuing along the theme of replacing Geno, I found this tweet, for what it's worth:

I like Joe Jones and he could probably be had, but I think Grasso would be the best of the 3, although he signed an extension through 26-27 with Bryant.  Hobbs hasn't been a head coach in 10 years, and is too old to be starting over, IMO.

Would love to see Grasso here.
